Editor's Notes
Just what is a paradigm shift? To understand this better, let's first talk about what a paradigm is.
Ask the dictionary and you'll see the definition of a paradigm as "a set of assumptions, concepts, values and practices that constitute a way of viewing reality for the community that shares them, especially in an intellectual discipline." In other words, a paradigm is "one that serves as a simple, yet life-changing pattern or model".
A paradigm is different from a map, which is too broad and is just like a book that you have to read and interpret. Most business and personal development courses are like that. You have to do a great deal of things and remember a lot of stuff along the way. It usually doesn't work for the best.
A paradigm is simpler. Much simpler. Comparing it with a map, when you have your paradigm, you already know what route to take. Everything is clear and easy to remember.
Let's go back to our problem... why we do what we do. If you recall, wrong habits... wrong beliefs... and conformity to the wrong standards or people. It's not easy to correct these three things, which believe it or not, when taken as a whole, is another paradigm. They have become our set of assumptions, concepts, values and practices in our day-to-day lives.
That's why you need to make a shift. From that unconscious paradigm, to what we call The Paradigm to Success. The Paradigm to Success consists of just three simple yet life-changing points which can help resolve your habits, beliefs and conformity situation, and more importantly... help you achieve your fullest potential in life.Let's talk about the first point.
Have a GOAL.Pretty simple isn't it? But it might come to you as a surprise that when most people are asked what their goal in life is, most people are vague about it or don't know what they actually want. Some call it one's ultimate goal, their life purpose or their personal mission statement. And it's not just in one area of their life, as this next slide reveals.
GOD - FAMILY - HEALTH - FINANCES β SERVICEOne's goal is ultimately a combination of all these things... I call these the core things that can bring joy in your life. Some of them may come to you as other names or synonyms. For example, God may equate to your spiritual life. Service may also talk about giving, goodwill or charitable contributions to your community, society or country. Stop and think about each one for a moment and ask yourself if you have a goal for each of these things. And if not, come up with one!
You might be asking why these five things are here. The explanation to that is if you try to miss out on just one, you will definitely end up being incomplete. Neglecting one area will affect you a lot.
Which brings us to the fact that for most people, only their financial goals matter. Make x amount of money in x amount of years. Own x amount of cars and x amount of houses, beachfront properties, high rise condominiums, and have x amount of businesses. These are awesome financial goals. Nothing against having and aiming to have these things, but there are other higher things than achieving wealth and managing one's finances.
After all, what good is wealth and riches if your health is not doing well? In like manner, what good is your health and riches if you are constantly troubled with family problems? Or what good is your achievement and accomplishments if you haven't learned how to give and render service to others (which is a prime example of achieving significance).
And what good is having all the rest in check, but leaving God out of the picture? Let me say that of all these things, it is God and an understanding of His love that should be above all.
Once you have settled into an understanding of that, let's now talk about something more interesting, somewhat childlike actually. But let me ask two questions up front, the first of which is... What is your dream?Or what are your dreams in life?
Someone said if you do not have a dream or an urge in life, nothing will happen. Do you belong to the people who just drift along with their lives and wait for things to happen, or do you belong to those who want to achieve something in their lifetime?
You might not want to be too vague in your answer there so let's narrow it down. What are you looking forward to accomplish in the next year? How about in three years? Then go forward from there. Is it to become a professional singer? An actor or actress in hollywood perhaps? A well-renowned doctor? Do you want to write your own book and make it a best-seller? Do you want to put up your own business, probably from a simple coffee shop or an internet cafe to a booming call center company that you own? Or perhaps become a successful internet marketer? There are many more, and it varies from person to person.
How about traveling all around Asia? Or backpacking in Europe? Or hiking in Africa? How about touring the most popular destinations in the whole world?Having a dream is important. It's one of the things in this world that is free. It's also one of the things that keeps you alive. Be free to dream!
The next question I want to ask is... What are your natural talents and abilities?I'm sure that each one of us is gifted with special talents and abilities coming from God. Some of them can range from speaking, singing, acting, writing, fixing or building things, to having a knack for finances, having a green thumb when it comes to gardening or tending to mother nature, to having an athletic body that's tuned in to sports... and many more.
Let me tell you that discovering or re-discovering your natural talents and abilities is key in achieving success. It's where your greatest strengths lie. Most people get this wrong and end up landing in a job just because it's high-paying or provides a lot of benefits.
One thing you should remember is you should never get wrong on your vocation, as you can only achieve both financial freedom and happiness if you work on your own talents.
The reason why I ask these two questions is again, they are connected to each other. If you have a dream, you will most likely achieve it if you use your natural talents and abilities, and making sure that your dream, talents and abilities are aligned with your core goals in life - the ones we talked about earlier - God, Family, Health, Finances and Service. When all of that is aligned we can the proceed to point #2.
2. Have a PLANAnother simple thing to remember right? Because again, this is not a map to success. This is The Paradigm to Success. But before talking more further about having a plan, let's be clear that we don't confuse any words here. A dream is something that you come up with in your mind. It doesn't become a goal unless it's written down. I'll say that again. It's not a goal unless it's written down! In that regard, a plan is the process of breaking down your goal that's coming from your dream.
Having a plan is crucial. Because without it, you cannot efficiently manage your resources such as time, money and energy. And you'll have trouble aligning whatever it is you'll be doing with your natural talents and abilities, as well as your core goals in life. Β
You want to make sure that you begin with the end in mind. That's coming from Stephen Covey, a renowned and respected author. And once you start doing this, you'll be able to harness the power of FOCUS.
From your specific dream in your mind, to your goal that's written down... you can come up with a simple plan, break it down into simple steps, and even break it further down into simple tasks. A step is basically a much bigger task, and a task is something that can be done in a daily basis.Take time and take these things to heart. Implementing a dream gets a whole lot simpler once you are able to break it down to the simplest of tasks. And you won't get easily sidetracked either, as you know what tasks every day are building towards your dream, and what would be just a waste of your time.
3. Have the Right ATTITUDEThe last component of The Paradigm to Success is Attitude. The right attitude in particular. As someone said, "your attitude determines your altitude". Having the right attitude is important because in a nutshell, planning is not enough. Plans will only be responsive to non-responsive things. There are other uncontrollable factors that can take place along the way, without your permission and knowledge.
Along the journey to your dream, you are almost guaranteed to encounter things such as discouragement, frustration, setbacks, and failures. And that's where having the right attitude kicks in. As John Maxwell said, "Failure is the price you pay for achieving success". He said that with the right attitude in mind. Only those people who have it are able to keep moving forward, in spite of any form of adversity that hits them.
While working on your plan, you need to have the right attitude, and that on a daily basis. It's the one thing that's going to keep you moving, no matter what kind of circumstances hit you.So while accomplishing your steps and tasks each day, leading to the fulfillment of your plan and eventually your goal, you have the choice to be happy and remain committed to your dream throughout the whole day, be the exact opposite, or be somewhere in between.
Why not take this time to do a little of everything that we've discussed so far? Put off everything else that you're doing and write down your dream or what you are looking forward to in the years ahead. Then in another section write down your natural talents, gifts and abilities that you know you possess. Then your core goals in life. From your dream, come up with a goal. Then from it, a simple plan broken down into simple steps and further into simple tasks. I'm sure it's not something that you're going to finish in the next 5 minutes. But do it as a start. And I'll see you in the next presentation.
