2. Dam of Thisavros
The hydroelectric power dam of Thisauros in
Paranesti-Nestos river is the biggest dam among
Balkan countries. The way along the river has slopes
full of oak trees and is known for the shelter, the river
provides for certain endangered species.
3. Dam of Thisavros
While the lake that is formed there expands along the
old estuary of the river for many km, makes river Nestos
seem from above like a huge float river.
The waters of river Nestos leave behind giant areas fulled
with green getting gently into the waters creating
something like tiny fjords. The view is astonishing and the
sight undoubtedly amazing.

Advantages
The major advantage of every hydroelectric dam is
elimination of the cost of fuel. The cost of operating a
hydroelectric plant is nearly immune to increases in the
cost of fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas or coal, and no
imports are needed.
Also,the use of a hydroelectric dam reduces the
CO2(carbon dioxide)emissions.

Disadvantages
Ecosystem damage and loss of land.Hydroelectric power
stations that use dams would submerge large areas of land
due to the requirement of a reservoir.Large reservoirs
required for the operation of hydroelectric power stations
result in submersion of extensive areas upstream of the
dams, destroying biologically rich and productive lowland
and riverine valley forests, marshland and grasslands.

Disadvantages
Another disadvantage of hydroelectric dams is the
need to relocate the people living where the
reservoirs are planned.
A hydroelectric dam can reduce CO2 emissions but it
produces methane emissions.

Purpose?
First of all the most important purpose of the dam is
irrigation and hydroelectric power production.The
power station is a pumped-storage type which allows it
to not only generate power but the turbines can
reverse and pump water back into the reservoir.

Sports/Visiting
Due to the fact this water dam is a renewable
energy site,students are visiting it every year.Some
of them are also trying extreme sports like rafting.If
you want,you can go closer to the dam but you
are going to need a special vehicle.

Animals/Plants
There are many animals and plants near this
water dam like deers,squirels,birds and different
kinds of fish.
