Smart Grid Tier 1 LCNF Energy Storage Project
ABB Grid Systems in the UK project managed the UK’s first
Energy Storage unit to be connected on the UK Power
Networks (ex EDF) 11kV distribution system in Norfolk with
ABB colleagues from FACTS Sweden.
The project will help ABB, UK Power Networks and Durham
University assess the true benefits of energy storage here is
a Video Presentation from Professor Phil Taylor explaining
the benefits to the system of Energy Storage and at the
same event a Saft Video Presentation which explains the UK
Power Networks Project
The following is a UK Power Network Video which explains
the project and the technology.

Q7 Princess Amalia Wind Farm 120 MW
Now well established technology, AC connected platforms
have been deployed for offshore windfarms for several
years.
Installed in 2008 the Princess Amalia offshore platform
equipment was provided by ABB.
ABB also provided the subsea cables
28 km of 170 kV shore connection power cable with Cu
conductors and integrated optical fibre cables
40 km, 24 kV inter-turbine cables with Al and Cu
conductors and integrated optical fibre cable.

HVDC Offshore Projects Troll A Oil and Gas
ABB Pioneered HVDC Offshore with the Troll A, Oil and
Gas Platform Power Supply.
Opened in 2005 it has provided one of Europe's largest
platforms with reliable power to operate the compressors.
With a second order now placed for additional HVDC
converter capacity reliable operation has been
demonstrated on the Troll A Platform
The following video explains how ABB placed the worlds
first HVDC offshore 7 years ago.

HVDC Offshore Projects BorWin 1 400MW
Following on from the extensive design and operational
experience gained form the Troll A project
ABB went on to build the worlds first 400MW HVDC
offshore wind platform BorWin 1, commissioned in 2009

HVDC Offshore Projects DolWin 1 800MW
ABB is now constructing the worlds largest HVDC platform
for Tennet in Germany
DolWin 1 is an 800MW HVDC single converter platform
operating at 320kV.
In the final stages of construction the following video shows

Interconnecting Europe
ABB is building the UKs first 500MW HVDC Voltage
Source Converter (VSC) link between Ireland an Wales
Due to come into operation this year the project is being
delivered by the Grid Systems Team
The technology used is the same technology that will allow
the interconnection of Europe and the creation of an
interconnected North Sea Grid
