The Burning Bush
Now Moses was pasturing the flock of
Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of
Midian; and he led the flock to the west
side of the wilderness and came to Horeb,
the mountain of God. The angel of the
LORD appeared to him in a blazing fire
from the midst of a bush; and he looked,
and behold, the bush was burning with
fire, yet the bush was not consumed. So
Moses said, “I must turn aside now and
see this marvelous sight, why the bush is
not burned up.”

Pharaoh’s daughter took him away and
nurtured him as her own son. Moses was
educated in all the learning of the
Egyptians, and he was a man of power in
words and deeds. But when he was
approaching the age of forty, it entered his
mind to visit his brethren, the sons of Israel.
And when he saw one of them being treated
unjustly, he defended him and took
vengeance for the oppressed by striking
down the Egyptian. And he supposed that
his brethren understood that God was
granting them deliverance through him, but
they did not understand.

Moses’ Anger
Moses said, “Thus says the LORD, ‘About
midnight I am going out into the midst of
Egypt, and all the firstborn in the land of
Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of the
Pharaoh who sits on his throne, even to the
firstborn of the slave girl who is behind the
millstones; all the firstborn of the cattle as
well. Moreover, there shall be a great cry in
all the land of Egypt, such as there has not
been before and such as shall never be
again.

But against any of the sons of Israel a dog
will not even bark, whether against man or
beast, that you may understand how the
LORD makes a distinction between Egypt and
Israel.’ "All these your servants will come
down to me and bow themselves before me,
saying, ‘Go out, you and all the people who
follow you,’ and after that I will go out” And
he went out from Pharaoh in hot anger.

21. God’s Anger
Then the LORD spoke to Moses, “Go down at
once, for your people, whom you brought up
from the land of Egypt, have corrupted
themselves. They have quickly turned aside
from the way which I commanded them.
They have made for themselves a molten
calf, and have worshiped it and have
sacrificed to it and said, ‘This is your god, O
Israel, who brought you up from the land of
Egypt!’”

22. God’s Anger
The LORD said to Moses, “I have seen this
people, and behold, they are an obstinate
people. Now then let Me alone, that My anger
may burn against them and that I may
destroy them; and I will make of you a great
nation.”

23. God’s Anger
Then Moses entreated the LORD his God, and
said, “O LORD, why does Your anger burn
against Your people whom You have brought
out from the land of Egypt with great power
and with a mighty hand? Why should the
Egyptians speak, saying, ‘With evil intent He
brought them out to kill them in the
mountains and to destroy them from the face
of the earth’? Turn from Your burning anger
and change Your mind about doing harm to
Your people.

24. God’s Anger
Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your
servants to whom You swore by Yourself,
and said to them, ‘I will multiply your
descendants as the stars of the heavens, and
all this land of which I have spoken I will
give to your descendants, and they shall
inherit it forever.’” So the LORD changed His
mind about the harm which He said He would
do to His people.

26. Moses’ Anger
It came about, as soon as Moses came near
the camp, that he saw the calf and the
dancing; and Moses’ anger burned, and he
threw the tablets from his hands and
shattered them at the foot of the mountain.
He took the calf which they had made and
burned it with fire, and ground it to powder,
and scattered it over the surface of the water
and made the sons of Israel drink it.

Then Moses said to Aaron, “What did this
people do to you, that you have brought such
great sin upon them?” Aaron said, “Do not let
the anger of my lord burn; you know the
people yourself, that they are prone to evil.

“Take the rod; and you and your brother
Aaron assemble the congregation and speak
to the rock before their eyes, that it may
yield its water. You shall thus bring forth
water for them out of the rock and let the
congregation and their beasts drink.” So
Moses took the rod from before the LORD,
just as He had commanded him.

29. Moses’ Anger
And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly
before the rock. And he said to them, “Listen
now, you rebels; shall we bring forth water
for you out of this rock?” Then Moses lifted
up his hand and struck the rock twice with
his rod; and water came forth abundantly,
and the congregation and their beasts drank.
But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
“Because you have not believed Me, to treat
Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel,
therefore you shall not bring this assembly
into the land which I have given them.”

30. Moses’ Anger
They also provoked Him to wrath at the
waters of Meribah, So that it went hard with
Moses on their account; Because they were
rebellious against His Spirit, He spoke rashly
with his lips.

By the waters of Meribah they angered the
LORD, and trouble came to Moses because of
them; for they rebelled against the Spirit of
God, and rash words came from Moses’ lips.

concerning the calamity which He had

did not do it.

said, “Please LORD, was not this what I said
while I was still in my own country?
Therefore in order to forestall this I fled to
Tarshish, for I knew that You are a gracious
and compassionate God, slow to anger and
abundant in lovingkindness, and one who
relents concerning calamity. Therefore now,
O LORD, please take my life from me, for
death is better to me than life.”
