REPORT SCOPE
INTRODUCTION
STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
This BCC Research report, The U.S. Medical Waste Treatment, Containment, Management and
Disposal Market, provides an update to the 2007 version of this report. The report includes an
overview of products in the medical waste market, offers detailed market analyses, and discusses
competitive environments. The study has information about significant products and players,
issues and trends influencing the marketplace as well as other data impacting the medical waste
industry.
REASONS FOR DOING THE STUDY
As the trend continues to evolve worldwide with regards to the regulation of medical waste, in
particular infectious medical waste, product suppliers, service providers and generators of medical
waste will need to be diligent in addressing issues affecting this topic. After the closing of more
than 3,600 medical waste incinerators in the United States during the 12 year period from 1995 to
2007, the industry was faced with finding alternatives to incineration, noted by most as the most
cost-effective and efficient method of disposing of medical waste. Now facilities turn to service
companies, autoclave methods, and even some microwave solutions to meet the steady flow of
medical waste generated by a growing health care and pharmaceutical industry.
This report will evaluate the industry for 2012 and discuss advances in the market since the last
update in 2007. Several challenges still exist in the medical waste market, including limited options
in on-site treatment and extravagant costs for removal of waste by service companies. Industry
experts have stressed the benefits of reducing the waste generated and taking advantage of
recycling opportunities to be the most beneficial for saving. However, this approach can take years
to implement in many facilities, particularly in high bed count hospitals. The need for cost-effective,
efficient solutions continues to be in high demand by facilities nationwide.
SCOPE OF THE REPORT
This study will be a helpful business tool, providing a thorough evaluation of the regulated medical
waste market. Its geographic scope is U.S. based, with supplemental data for international
regions. The report identifies markets in three general segments:
•Medical waste treatment.
•Medical waste containment.
•Medical waste management and disposal.
Each market segment provides detailed information based on product categories, product use,
forecasts, and competitive analyses.
The study focuses on alternative methods of medical waste treatment due to the increased
regulatory requirements for incineration methods and provides an overview of services and
containment options utilized by health care companies in the United States.
Products discussed only provide overviews and examples of systems or services on the market.
This is not a comprehensive list of providers or manufacturers.
METHODOLOGY
The information for this report was obtained through primary and secondary data collection
methods. Primary sources included interviews with more than 50 key executives, product
managers, industry specialists, and other related key personnel involved with the medical waste
industry. Secondary sources included published literature, investment reports, company literature,
and various business journals that have emphases on waste management and related areas.
Market data for this report pertains to the U.S. market in USD at the manufacturers' level. The
base year of the report is 2012, with historical data provided for 2007 through 2011, and forecast
data provided for 2017. Historical, base year and forecast data are provided for each market
segment of the report. Growth rates are determined through a compilation of data, including past
trends, future trends, demographics, incidence, mortality, technology developments, current
product growth, etc. Competitor market share estimates are provided for each market segment for
the 2012 base year.
