Key Market Issues
Looking back at 2011, the strong Swiss Franc put pressure on prices and increased imports from
Germany, France and Portugal causing local brewers to lose volume.
Small regional brewers with less than 5,000 hl per year, increased market share and volume.
However, volumes were so small that their presence was not felt by leaders Heineken and
Feldschlösschen.
Swiss brewers lost share in the market to imported beer. Imports increased again to reach a new
high of 23%share, 1% more than the previous year.
The trend towards quick service restaurants and away from traditional gastronomy put pressure on
volumes and margins, leading Feldschlösschen to announce a price increase in May 2012.
Tougher restrictions on the sale of alcohol to minors have been put in place, as well as a
liberalization on the production of alcohol, adapting it to modern times and measures.
Key Highlights
Small regional brewers with less than 5,000 hl per year, increased market share and volume.

growth of new local beers with new tastes

3. The trend towards diversity can be seen in the increase of the number of registered breweries in
Switzerland.
