A detailed market research report on the Russia beer industry. Researched and published by
Canadean.

Introduction and Landscape
Why was the report written?
This report comprises high level market research data on the Russia beer industry, published by
Canadean. The report covers the total market (on- and off-premise) and includes valuable insight
and analysis on beer market trends, brands, brewers, packaging, distribution channels, market
valuation and pricing.

What is the current market landscape and what is changing?
In 2011, beer consumption in Russia demonstrated a slight negative performance (a decline of
1%), while production of beer was slightly higher (by nearly 2%) than in the previous year.

What are the key drivers behind recent market changes?
Elevated retail prices on beer over recent years (which had been initially driven by a three-fold
jump of the excise tax in 2010), combined with the flat performance of consumer income
negatively impacted demand for beer and led to stagnation of beer consumption in 2011.

What makes this report unique and essential to read?
The Russia Beer Market Insight report is designed for clients needing a quality in-depth
understanding of the dynamics and structure of the Beer market. The report provides a much more
granular and detailed data set than our competitors. All data has been researched, brand
upwards, by an experienced ''on-the-ground'' industry analyst who conducts face-to-face
interviews with key producers, leading companies in allied industries, distributors and retailers.

Key Features and Benefits

and reports on new product activity in 2011.

brewer profiles for ten major brewers

This report provides distribution channel data (on- vs off-premise) and discusses the latest trends
in the key sub-channels. Packaging data includes consumption volumes by pack material, type,
size, refillable vs non-refillable, multi-serve vs single serve. Market valuation data and pricing data,
including beer consumption by price segment/distribution channel and selected consumer beer
prices are also included.

Key Market Issues
Elevated retail prices on beer over recent years (which had been initially driven by a three-fold
jump of the excise tax in 2010), combined with the flat performance of consumer income
negatively impacted demand for beer and led to stagnation of beer consumption in 2011.

Retail sales only increased at a low single-digit growth rate, mainly due to the very low initial base
of the previous year.

Summer weather conditions were less favourable in 2011 than the previous year, which was
extremely hot, and as a result consumption of beer dropped significantly, compensating for the
initial positive sales growth.

Despite the slowing rate of inflation in 2011, beer prices increased on average by 13% under
pressure of growing production costs such as higher costs of ingredients, salaries, transportation
and distribution. This also negatively impacted beer consumption.

Stagnation of beer consumption, combined with rumours of fast approaching new regulations and
additional restrictions on beer production, packaging and distribution combined to cause a
negative mood in the brewing industry.

Key Highlights
Consumption of beer produced by microbreweries in 2011 increased significantly.

In 2011, microbreweries were making profits mostly on the production of non-pasteurized beer, the
so called''zhivoye pivo'' which was distributed via specialised retail outlets.

In terms of the price segmentation dynamics, mainstream brands demonstrated better
performance compared to premium and economy beer.
Less competitive pricing of premium brands encouraged consumers to switch to less expensive
mainstream brands due to stagnated incomes against a background of price increases on
essential foods.

In the first half of the year, consumer demand for beer in Russia demonstrated positive dynamics,
although retail sales only increased at a low single-digit growth rate.
