Remote access software for business and home use
- 2. Remote Utilities™ Product Overview
The Swiss Army Knife of Remote Computing
What is Remote Utilities
Remote Utilities (RUT) is professional remote access software that provides easy and secure access to a
remote PC. With Remote Utilities, you can view the remote screen and operate its mouse and keyboard
as if you were sitting right in front of it.
Remote Utilities can connect over either a LAN or the Internet in a variety of connection modes. This
makes it an indispensable tool for small and medium-sized businesses looking for a multi-purpose and yet
affordable remote control and helpdesk solution. However, it can also scale to larger environments with
thousands of PCs and Windows servers.
Remote Utilities utilizes a client-server model with two stand-alone components installed separately:
• RUT-Viewer, installed on the local PC (administrator’s PC)
• RUT-Server, installed on the remote PCs
The connection can be established directly using an IP address, or indirectly using the Internet ID —
a firewall bypass feature that is today’s standard for any advanced and powerful remote PC access soft-
ware. The Internet ID technology allows firewalls and NAT services to be bypassed when connecting
to a remote PC.
“For power users, there’s plenty to like about Remote Utilities. Several connection modes are offered
beyond the full remote desktop experience. There’s also a file transfer mode, remote device manager,
registry viewer, remote webcam access, and a terminal mode — which is an excellent way to perform
simple command line tasks from a distance.“

Key Benefits
Access and administer PCs in your local network from anywhere
RUT is specifically designed to help businesses complete a variety of tasks connected with maintaining
PC infrastructure. It is a single “command center” where you can keep a list of all your PCs, monitor their
statuses and inventory, and connect to any of them for maintenance purposes:
• Deploy RUT across your entire network within minutes using the built-in installation tool;
• Simplify product registration — no activation or linkage to hardware;
• Save time — you no longer need to physically access remote PCs to fix them; a laptop, LAN, and/
or Internet connection will suffice;
• Connect to your PCs from any place provided the Internet access is available;
• Optimize your PC inventory management with RUT as a “center of operations”.
Remote customer support
RUT greatly simplifies remote customer support and brings the following benefits to helpdesk providers:
• Eliminate client frustration — no more IP addresses, port forwarding, and arcane magic
knowledge necessary thanks to the firewall bypass capability. Connecting to a client’s PC for on-
demand customer support is as simple as clicking a button;
• Customize the remote support module — make you’re your own custom installer branded with
your logo so that your customers see your logo when you establish a remote session;
• High ROI — happy customers are the company’s most valuable asset, which ultimately translates
into more sales. Therefore, investing in powerful remote control software is a must;
• Simple to learn. RUT is easy-to-use and intuitive — your helpdesk technicians and your
customers can start using it professionally in no time.
Telecommuting
For telecommuters as well as for regular workers who are traveling, Remote Utilities brings specific
advantages:
• Utilize the programs installed on your office PC from anywhere — no need to install them on your
travel laptop or a home PC;
• Get access to sensitive information stored on your PC (for example, passwords) via a highly-
secured Internet connection;
• Sleep well — all you need for work is the RUT-Viewer installed on your laptop and an Internet
connection. If someone steals your laptop — your files, passwords, bookmarks etc. will remain safe
on the remote PC.

Key Features
Remote Access and Communication
• Full control. View the remote computer screen, control its mouse cursor and send keyboard
presses. You can also capture remote sound in this mode;
• File transfer. Basic operations with files and folders in a two-pane window, two-way drag’n’drop
and smart file download resumption. Hotkeys are also supported;
• Firewall bypass. An Internet ID feature utilizes an intermediary web-server to connect the remote
and the viewer PCs thus making firewall bypass possible. All you need to do to access a remote PC
is to know its Internet ID code (generated by the host PC) and password;
• Callback connection. This is another way to bypass firewalls. The “Callback Connection” feature
makes the remote PC initiate connection backward - from the host to the client. This comes in handy
if the IP-address of the remote PC is unknown but a direct IP-to-IP connection is still required;
• Connect through host. A PC with a RUT-Server running on it can itself serve as an intermediary
server to provide remote access to another PC with a RUT-Server installed, thus forwarding the
remote connection;
• Text chat/Send message. Initiate a text chat with the person sitting at the remote PC or send
them a simple text message;
• Audio/Video chat. Basic video-conferencing capabilities.
Administration/Management
• Remote registry. With the Remote Registry connection mode you can get direct access to the
remote computer’s registry and do the necessary edits to the registry;
• Remote task manager. Remote Task manager is a connection mode you can use to get access to
the list of processes, applications and services running on the remote machine;
• Remote shutdown/restart. This mode is used to control the basic power supply functions on the
remote computer. The following operations are available: restart, shut down, lock and logoff current
user of the remote computer;
• Inventory Management. A built-in Inventory Management module enables you to gather hardware
and software inventory information from the remote PCs and build complete and comprehensive
asset summary and inventory reports;
• Multiple monitors support. If the remote computer has several monitors, Remote Utilities allows
you to view or control them simultaneously in one window or switch to the necessary monitor.
Helpdesk
• QuickConnect (available from v5.1). QuickConnect.exe is a stand-alone customizable version of
the RUT-Server, which can run without installation and administrative privileges. This is very handy
when installation on a remote PC is not possible because of user rights restrictions or other such
constraints;
• Multiple connection support. Unlimited number of simultaneous connections is supported: RUT-
Viewer can connect to several RUT-Servers at a time and RUT-Server can accept connections from
several clients at once.

Remote Surveillance
• View only mode. Get a view of a remote computer’s screen to find out what’s going on without
interfering in the work of the remote user;
• Screen recording. Specify the schedule for taking screenshots of the remote PC screen at regular
intervals and saving them to a file for later review;
• Hide tray icon. It is possible to hide the RUT-Server tray icon. This option is turned on by default;
• Get remote camera and microphone. Connect to video and audio capturing devices (such as a
web-camera or a microphone) and transmit the data from the remote PC to the local PC.
Installation and Deployment
• MSI-Configurator. The RUT-Server distribution package is supplied as an .MSI file. RUT has a
built-in MSI Configurator tool for configuring the MSI distribution package before installation;
• QuickConnect customization. The QuickConnect.exe file can be customized by a helpdesk
technician and put on the web-server for download. When the remote user downloads and runs the
file an encrypted message is automatically sent to the technician. That message contains the access
credentials (Internet ID and password) the technician needs to connect to the remote machine.
Performance
• No mirror driver. Remote Utilities shows unsurpassed performance rates without using the driver
kernel. This prevents conflicts with the equipment and drivers;
• Adjustable color depth. Adjust the color depth for any remote connection. Remote Utilities shows
good performance even at 24-bit (TrueColor) depth;
• Economode. When the Economode is on the traffic consumption drops significantly. This is
especially suitable for slow networks (Dial-up, GPRS).
Security
• Industry-standard security algorithms. All data Remote Utilities sends over the network is
encrypted with the secure encryption algorithms (a 2048-bit public key and AES with a 256-bit
session key);
• Two authorization subsystems: Single password security and Windows security system (Active
Directory);
• Network interface binding. You can assign a RUT-Server to a specific network interface for
added security;
• IP-Filter. Allows connection only from explicitly specified IP addresses and networks and blocks
attempts to get access to RUT-Server from IP addresses and networks not in the list;
• Password and DDos. Protection against brute force password cracking attempts and DDos
attacks;
• Event log. RUT-Server has an event logging option that enables you to keep the records of all the
actions and events of the program;
• Lock input and blank remote screen. Ability to enable lock keyboard input option and blank the
remote monitor screen either before connecting to the remote PC or after the connection has been
established.

Home license is for private use only, in which no direct or indirect payment or compensation is involved.
Typical Home license use includes helping friends or family with their PC tasks or administering the PCs
on your home network. The program is licensed based on the number of remote PCs you need to control.
Enterprise license is suitable for the situation when the number of remote PCs is finite and all the remote
PCs belong to your company or subsidiaries. The number of Enterprise licenses you need to purchase is
equal to the number of remote PCs you are going to control with the program.
Helpdesk license is specifically designed for companies providing remote customer support for their
clients. Unlike the Enterprise and Home licenses, the Helpdesk license is paid for on a ‘per channel’ basis
rather than ‘per PC’. The number of channels that you buy under the terms of the Helpdesk license is
equal to the number of viewer PCs you are planning to use simulteneously.
