Film distribution
1.
2. Film distribution is the process by which the product
(Film, television show etc.) is released into the market;
films don’t become well known and successful by luck, it’s
all up to the distributers to sell the product to
television, cinemas, airlines or any company that shows
films or television shows as well as circulating and
marketing the product so that people can watch it at
home via DVD or download etc. The distributers play a
huge part in film production and without them no one
would have heard of the big films today!
3. Our film ‘Ebony’ is a hybrid Thriller, These are other thriller films which we
used as research for our film:
-Dreamworks distributed ‘The Ring’
-New line cinema distributed ‘Se7en’
-Cinemagic Pictures distributed ‘I spit on your grave’
-‘Screen Gems’ distributed ‘Arlington Road
I think that ‘Screen Gems’ which was founded in 1999 and is a Subsidiary
of Sony Pictures a film studio would be the best company to distribute
our film because it has produced lots of hybrid Thriller films like ‘Half past
dead’, ‘When a stranger calls’ and ‘Prom night’ so I think it would
market our film quite well because it’s had a lot of experience and box
office success with thriller and horror films.
4. I think that our film could be successful with audiences world wide
because all the films we researched (The Ring, Arlington Road, Se7en, I
Spit On Your Grave) are all produced and distributed in America and if
even we have heard of them here in Britain, they must have been
successful worldwide and as our film ‘Ebony’ is of a similar genre to
these films I think that it will be quite successful
Here are some statistics about what types of audiences went to see
thriller films similar to ours:
-The majority of the audience that viewed ‘The Ring’ were aged 15-34 and people who
went to see the film were women at 54%, although there were still a lot of male viewers at
46%
-The majority of the audience that saw ‘Bourne Identity’ were aged 15-34 and the majority
of people who went to see the film were male by 63% and female 37%
-The majority of the audience that watched ‘No country for old men’ were aged 15-32
and the majority of people who went to see the film were male by 59% (women by 41%)
This information shows that our audience will be aged 15-34 and they
will be mainly male to female.
5. Marketing is very important in distribution otherwise the product can’t be
heard of, some ways we could market our product could be through:
-Word of mouth We could do this by telling friends, family, colleagues etc.
about our film
-Poster- we could design a poster and put it up around towns, colleges,
restaurants and so on
-Trailers We could design a trailer like they do for big movies like ‘Twilight for
‘Ebony’ and release it onto popular social network sites like YouTube and
Facebook
-Online and Mobile apps We could create an application which could
used via smart phone or online e.g. a game like angry birds
-Publicity by putting adverts in magazines, newspapers, billboards, on the
side of buses etc., merchandise,
-Film festivals we could organize a market where distributors seeking to
acquire product may meet with sellers (agents, producers, studios), A
competition, where new titles may be screened to juries of filmmakers and
awarded prizes, a high-profile platform where films can be showcased prior
to release
-Premiere are seen as glamorous and exclusive, our distributors' publicists
could organise a premiere in prime location as an official launch for a film,
providing a platform for photo opportunities and red carpet interviews.
6. • The Advantages to self-distribution include retaining full control and rights
over our film, thus giving us the choice over where our film is shown.
Additionally we don't have to give any of the money made from any sales
of our film to a distributor.
• The Disadvantages to self-distribution are that it can be a full-time job as it
can be very time consuming chasing buyers and sales and filling in
paperwork, It also might limit our options for sales plus we would need to be
very legally knowledgeable and make sure that we're not signing away
rights to our film that will prevent us from showing where we want
I think the disadvantages weigh out the advantages and with
all this in mind, I think that it would be a smart decision not to do
self-distribution, though we might save money, I don’t think that
it’s worth the risk of accidentally signing over our the film.
