“ African-American?” Language: English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Creole, African languages Ancestry: Share a common background as diasporal people, but hail from hundreds of different Western African peoples. History: Share a common background as a minority people in a white- majority culture. Common culture: Depends upon one’s definition of culture. Common skin color: “Black” people come in many shades of color.
