15. From the Press Release: 30 Learning Innovation Labs in Museums and Libraries “ The MacArthur-IMLS learning labs will be part of a network of museums and libraries throughout the country that use best practice principles, based on research and evidence, to engage youth in effective science, technology, engineering, and math education. These new learning labs will be spaces for experimentation that engage young people with both digital and traditional media to promote creativity, critical thinking, and hands-on learning. Young people will be engaged in anytime, anywhere access through online social networks so that they can pursue their interests more deeply. The goal is to build a base of evidence about how young people learn today, in an effort to re-imagine learning in the 21st Century.” Macarthur Foundation, IMLS Grant

25. Well, one thing is for sure, civics definitely is complicated. Politics and all of it is not an easy subject to learn about, there are too many opinions. However, i believe we have learned a couple good points a student should know about civics. Me and Ian's game is about the different parties and their views on certain disagreements in our country right now. We learned mainly about how each party stands on healthcare, foreign affairs, etc. etc. It was an enjoyable experience and an educational one also. (Male 10 th -grader, 15 years of age) Student Quotes
26. Well, its hard to sum up all the things i learned in Game Design in one blog, but here it is. The main things i learned was more about computers overall, and specifically flash and civics. We had to make our flash game on civics, so that is why i leanred most about them. I have learned alot about how to code, how to animate, and how to construct a flash game. I still have alot to learn about it, but it was a great start. About civics, i learned alot about the different political parties views and also the stands that different parties take. (Male 10 th -grader, 15 years of age) Student Quotes
27. I want to learn more about the 27 amendments. Learning about America's History is hard to learn. A game can help by teaching people about Civics in a fun way … It would be fun to make a music game to teach kids about Civics and after every song they collect a part of the Constitutional Bill of Rights. (Male 7 th grader, 12 years of age) Student Quotes
28. I learned a lot about all the amendments. (Although we are only using the first 10 for our game). I learned that as citizens of the U.S.A. we have rights of the government that nobody can take away. (Male 7 th grader, 12 years of age) Student Quotes

Editor's Notes
… On its surface, Globaloria is a 21 st Century game development training course for a greater purpose – which is why young people love it! Have fun and be engaged. Students and educators dig deeper into core subjects and pressing social issues, while developing critical digital literacies –without even realizing it. As one of our funders likes to call it – Globaloria is “stealth learning.”
Globaloria is about turning the way we learn into a collaborative, transparent, student-centered and hands-on process using the latest social networking tools and digital media technology. It is learning through design.
In addition to the amazing impact we have seen over the past few years researching and evaluating the Globaloria program we… We are in unique position of having everything we do be rooted in years of academic research and real-world practice. In the 1980s and 1990s, while at Harvard and the MIT Media Lab, Idit really founded the concept that children learn best by designing – when they are programming computers instead of computers programming them. Ground breaking research with children in Bronx, showing how software designing could change their relationship to education and their engage them in learning in a way that had not been seen before
We have taken all this learning and experience and established the cornerstone of the Globaloria Program – It’s Learning Formula. I want to take a minute on this slide: Self-Led Learning- students determine the needs of their learning as they progress through the process of designing their own games. It is purposeful, self-directed and hands-on learing Peer-to-peer learning – it is collaborative learning. Students take on the role of both educators and students. They have a critical role in their own learning and in the advancement of their learning community. They are invested. Co-Learning – we are breaking down the traditional hierarchy in the classroom and having students and educators learn together. Students don’t learn for the grade, but as part of a community of creators. Expert-guided learning – we do not divorce learning from the real-world…it is the real world. Students engage with real professional and see the relevance of their learning in today’s world.
How do we plan to grow exponentially in a way that is sustainable? Strong and innovative Professional Development programs for educators, principals and students ensure the community can self-manage, grow and develop. Hands-on training: Mentor program – cascading and taken to scale Virtual support – sustainable, scalable – walking our talk Rewards & Recognition – we pay
They gain the skills and self-confidence to actively participate in today’s online world – researching, sharing, and contributing to the myriad social media networking tools available today.

Students use the wiki space as a collaborative design studio. They post, share and review every step of the game design and development process; learning from one another and contributing to each others learning.
