The Netherlands has historically relied on diking to protect low-lying areas from flooding. Without these dikes, much of the country would be underwater as around half of the Netherlands lies below sea level. Large-scale flooding could displace many Dutch residents and cause significant economic damage if the dikes were no longer maintained and strengthened.
