• Construction of the Washington began in
1792, and inaugurated in 1800, the same year
that became the U.S. capital. Washington was
named after the first American
President, George Washington, while the term
District of Columbia derives from an ancient
poetic name of the United States, Columbia.
Washington is divided in four
quadrants, divided by four long streets. These
streets run Capitol Washington, and are named
North Capitol Street, South Capitol Street, East
Capitol Street and West Capitol Street.
