A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... Java open source developers managed to the see the previously secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the JAVA™ COLLECTIONS FRAMEWORK. Evading the dreaded Imperial Starfleet, a group of freedom fighters investigate the performance of the Empire’s most popular weapons: LinkedList, ArrayList and HashMap. In addition, they investigate common developer errors and bugs to help protect their vital software. With this new found knowledge they strike back! Pursued by the Empire's sinister agents, JDuchess races home aboard her JVM, investigating proposed future changes to the Java Collections and other options such as Immutable Collections which could save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy....

Awareness of design smells - indicators of common design problems - helps developers or software engineers understand mistakes made while designing and apply design principles for creating high-quality designs. This workshop provides insights gained from performing refactoring in real-world projects to improve refactoring and reduce the time and costs of managing software projects. The workshop also presents insightful anecdotes and case studies drawn from the trenches of real-world projects. By attending this workshop, you will know pragmatic techniques for refactoring design smells to manage technical debt and to create and maintain high-quality software in practice. Contents overview: * Why care about design principles, design quality, or design smells? * Refactoring as the primary means for repaying technical debt * Smells that violate abstraction, encapsulation, modularisation, or hierarchy * Tools and techniques for refactoring

The 3.0 storage engine re-write is the biggest and most exciting change to ever happen in Apache Cassandra. The new storage engine can efficiently store and read data from disk using the same concepts present in the CQL 3 language. This has delivered large space savings, and creates new performance characteristics. In this talk Aaron Morton, Co Founder at The Last Pickle and Apache Cassandra Committer, will discuss the 3.0 storage engine, it's layout and performance characteristics. About the Speaker Aaron Morton CEO, The Last Pickle Aaron Morton is the Co Founder & CEO at The Last Pickle (thelastpickle.com). A professional services company that works with clients to deliver and improve Apache Cassandra based solutions. He's based in New Zealand, is an Apache Cassandra Committer and a DataStax MVP for Apache Cassandra.

Rust is a young programming language developed by Mozilla with the open source community support. According to a survey of StackOverflow, in 2016 was the most loved among developers language! The goal of Rust is to combine control and performances, that is, operate at low level with high-level constructs. The actual applications vary from operating system to web development. Rust natively includes tools for Agile development, such as dependency management, testing and much more. The gap with other popular languages is filling up quickly thanks to the community, very active and fantastic :) In this introductory presentation we will discuss the characteristics that make Rust unique, including the concepts of Ownership, Borrowing, and Lifetimes. These slide has be presented for a talk in BIC Lazio Casilina, that has been also the first meetup of Rust Rome!

The Rust compiler's borrow checker is critical for ensuring safe Rust code. Even more critical, however, is how the borrow checker provides useful, automated guidance on how to write safe code when the check fails. Early in your Rust journey it may feel like you are fighting the borrow checker. Come to this talk to learn how you can transition from fighting the borrow checker to using its guidance to write safer and more powerful code at any experience level. Walk away not only understanding the what and the how of the borrow checker - but why it works the way it does - and why it is so critical to both the technical functionality and philosophy of Rust.

Primary and Clustering Keys should be one of the very first things you learn about when modeling Cassandra data. Most people coming from a relational background automatically think, ""Yeah, I know what a Primary Key is"", and gloss right over it. Because of this, there always seems to be a lot of confusion around the topic of Primary Keys in Cassandra. This presentation will demystify that confusion. I will cover what the different types of Keys are, how they can be used, what their purpose is, and how they affect your queries. For this presentation, I will be using CrossFit gym locations as my subject matter. I will explain the differences between Primary Keys, Compound Keys, Clustering Keys, & Composite Keys. I will also show how the data behind each type differs as stored on disk. Lastly, I will show what queries each type of key will support. About the Speaker Adam Hutson Data Architect, DataScale Adam is Data Architect for DataScale, Inc. He is a seasoned data professional with experience designing & developing large-scale, high-volume database systems. Adam previously spent four years as Senior Data Engineer for Expedia building a distributed Hotel Search using Cassandra 1.1 in AWS. Having worked with Cassandra since version 0.8, he was early to recognize the value Cassandra adds to Enterprise data storage. Adam is also a DataStax Certified Cassandra Developer.

The state of analytics has changed dramatically over the last few years. Hadoop is now commonplace, and the ecosystem has evolved to include new tools such as Spark, Shark, and Drill, that live alongside the old MapReduce-based standards. It can be difficult to keep up with the pace of change, and newcomers are left with a dizzying variety of seemingly similar choices. This is compounded by the number of possible deployment permutations, which can cause all but the most determined to simply stick with the tried and true. But there are serious advantages to many of the new tools, and this presentation will give an analysis of the current state–including pros and cons as well as what’s needed to bootstrap and operate the various options. About Robbie Strickland, Software Development Manager at The Weather Channel Robbie works for The Weather Channel’s digital division as part of the team that builds backend services for weather.com and the TWC mobile apps. He has been involved in the Cassandra project since 2010 and has contributed in a variety of ways over the years; this includes work on drivers for Scala and C#, the Hadoop integration, heading up the Atlanta Cassandra Users Group, and answering lots of Stack Overflow questions.

Comparisons are fundamental to computing - and comparing strings is not nearly as straightforward as you might think. Come learn about the history, nuance and surprises of “putting words in order” that you never knew existed in computer science, and how that nuance impacts both general programming and SQL programming. Next, walk through a few actual scenarios and demonstrations using PostgreSQL as a user and administrator, which you can re-run yourself later for further study, including one way you could easily corrupt your self-managed PostgreSQL database if you aren't prepared. Finally we’ll dive into an explanation of the surprising behaviors we saw in PostgreSQL, and learn more about user and administrative features PostgreSQL provides related to localized string comparison.

Hekaton is the original project name for In-Memory OLTP and just sounds cooler for a title name. Keeping up the tradition of deep technical “Inside” sessions at PASS, this half-day talk will take you behind the scenes and under the covers on how the In-Memory OLTP functionality works with SQL Server. We will cover “everything Hekaton”, including how it is integrated with the SQL Server Engine Architecture. We will explore how data is stored in memory and on disk, how I/O works, how native complied procedures are built and executed. We will also look at how Hekaton integrates with the rest of the engine, including Backup, Restore, Recovery, High-Availability, Transaction Logging, and Troubleshooting. Demos are a must for a half-day session like this and what would an inside session be if we didn’t bring out the Windows Debugger. As with previous “Inside…” talks I’ve presented at PASS, this session is level 500 and not for the faint of heart. So read through the docs on In-Memory OLTP and bring some extra pain reliever as we move fast and go deep. This session will appear as two sessions in the program guide but is not a Part I and II. It is one complete session with a small break so you should plan to attend it all to get the maximum benefit.

ASTs are an incredibly powerful tool for understanding and manipulating JavaScript. We'll explore this topic by looking at examples from ESLint, a pluggable static analysis tool, and Browserify, a client-side module bundler. Through these examples we'll see how ASTs can be great for analyzing and even for modifying your JavaScript. This talk should be interesting to anyone that regularly builds apps in JavaScript either on the client-side or on the server-side.

Simon Elliston Ball – When to NoSQL and When to Know SQL With NoSQL, NewSQL and plain old SQL, there are so many tools around it’s not always clear which is the right one for the job. This is a look at a series of NoSQL technologies, comparing them against traditional SQL technology. I’ll compare real use cases and show how they are solved with both NoSQL options, and traditional SQL servers, and then see who wins. We’ll look at some code and architecture examples that fit a variety of NoSQL techniques, and some where SQL is a better answer. We’ll see some big data problems, little data problems, and a bunch of new and old database technologies to find whatever it takes to solve the problem.By the end you’ll hopefully know more NoSQL, and maybe even have a few new tricks with SQL, and what’s more how to choose the right tool for the job.

The database industry has been abuzz over the past year about NoSQL databases. Apache Cassandra, which has quickly emerged as a best-of-breed solution in this space, is used at many companies to achieve unprecedented scale while maintaining streamlined operations. This presentation goes beyond the hype, buzzwords, and rehashed slides and actually presents the attendees with a hands-on, step-by-step tutorial on how to write a Java application on top of Apache Cassandra. It focuses on concepts such as idempotence, tunable consistency, and shared-nothing clusters to help attendees get started with Apache Cassandra quickly while avoiding common pitfalls.
