2. WHAT IS VOYEURISM?
Voyeurism is an act of watching someone who is performing any sexual
behaviors such as dancing, in order to gain pleasure. The person being
watched is often unaware of their audience and in the terms of music
videos it is usually a men’s controlling gaze towards women who have
been sexually objectified. Voyeurism is often used to help sell a product
and create audience interest. There are many uses of voyeurism in
many music videos. I have used an example of a music video with
voyeurism in an upcoming slide.
4. In music videos, women are most commonly sexually
objected whether it be through dance movements,
costume or body language.
However, theorist Andrew Goodwin suggests that women
are objected via camera angles and editing which are
used to highlight specific bodily aspects of the performer
thus preventing them in a sexualized way.
6. In the music video ‘worth it’ by
Fifth Harmony, The video
features the ladies in business-
esque attire. Taking place in an
office building, they are seen as
CEOs and bosses, dancing in
front of a stock market ticker in
a sexual and attractive. The
video features many feminist
attributes, as it shows women
working and succeeding in a
male-dominated world such as
Wall Street, and statements
flashing in front of the stock
market ticket such as "women in
power", "feminism is sexy" and
"glass ceiling". "Worth It" is
written from the perspective of a
woman telling a man that she's
"Worth It", applying sexual
7. Kid Ink is also featured in the video
with attractive women near him as he
raps. The camera angles and the close
ups say it all. The way the camera is
handle in this music video is the real
reason behind making it all appealing
and sexually attractive gaining the
attention of more audience thus
making the music video a hit.
The video seems more seducing
and appealing to the audience
because of the body
movements, costume, make up
and the performer herself. She
knows how to take control of
the man standing right next to
her by making a direct eye
contact with him and her body
8. In this screenshot the
woman is standing in a
position, sexual enough
to get the attraction of a
males gaze.
Here the camera angle is
the reason behind the
attraction of the audience
as it is showing some
body parts. Sexual
connotation is applied
here as well.
