Running Memory
SUBJECT:
Mathematics
MATERIAL:
14 memory cards  7 pairs with the same picture
PROCEDURE:
The pupils have to form 2 teams. The memory cards are placed on the other
side of the classroom. The first pupil of the team runs to the memory cards, picks
up two of them and says the name of the shape loudly. If two cards belong
together, the pupil is allowed to keep them. He runs back as fast as possible.
The next pupil starts.
If the two cards don’t belong together, the pupil has to turn them round and lay
them down again. He/She runs back as fast as possible and the next pupil starts.
Winner is the team which has got all pairs first.
TEACHER’S LANGUAGE:
“First I’ll divide you into two teams.”
“Now let’s leave the classroom.”
“We are going to play ‘running memory.’”
“Please stand up in a line”
“The first of your team runs to the memory cards, picks up two cards and names
the shape. Say it loudly so that your team members can hear you. If you find a
pair you have to pick it up and run back to your team. If you see two different
shapes on your cards you have to put them back on the floor.”
“Winner is the team which has got all pairs first”
WAYS TO DIFFERENTIATE:
- You can play this game with any pictures! (Christmas, fruit, animals)
- Primary II: The memory cards are without pictures – there are just the words on
it.
TEACHING AIMS:
Children should be able to
- name the shapes
- say the words correctly
- remember where the memory cards with the same shapes laid
CHILDREN’S LANGUAGE POINTS:
Before you can play this game you have to introduce the words:
rectangle, circle, square, triangle, star, heart, pentagon,
