This booklet captures the process and results of an open innovation
challenge hosted by Sony and WWF using the OpenIDEO platform.
You shared your imagination with us. We gained new insight from
your smart ideas about using—and, in some cases, cleverly
repurposing—Sony technology to help us make the most of our
planet’s resources. After reviewing the impressive number of design
inspirations and concepts, we chose a final concept for promoting
a cleaner, more sustainable future.
Thank you!

The Sony-WWF challenge was hosted by IDEO, a global design
and innovation consultancy that creates impact through design.
IDEO designed the OpenIDEO platform and facilitated the challenge.

Why is Sony doing this?
As one of the world’s biggest digital entertainment companies, we
at Sony believe passionately in using technology to do good things,
such as solving some of the environmental issues facing the planet.
We also believe that people can make really amazing things happen
when they get together!
We created Open Planet Ideas to reflect this philosophy — and
as part of our commitment to help create a more sustainable
environment for current and future generations. We also built Open
Planet Ideas to show that communities can play a vital role in
accelerating the pace of technological, social, and environmental
change.
We’ve set strict sustainability targets for ourselves that include
lowering energy consumption, reusing materials, and recycling
more. We’re looking beyond our products to support eco-initiatives
that could benefit from using our technologies.
Find out more at www.sony.co.uk/eco.
Why is WWF doing this?
At WWF we’re always open to new ideas, particularly those that
help raise awareness of environmental issues, that inspire solution-
oriented responses, and that ultimately benefit our one and only
planet. We also believe that we can’t do everything alone. That’s
why we have a long and successful track record of working with
others (including some of the world’s leading companies) to raise
standards, drive sustainability, and bring about positive change.
WWF’s corporate partners use their voices to make change happen.
This is exactly what Open Planet Ideas is about: tapping into the
amazing potential of open-source technology to let more voices be
heard and to make a positive contribution to the environment and to
society. Our vision is one of a world where people live in harmony
with nature. We’re confident that by collaborating constructively we
can and will solve current problems—especially if we use the great
tools and resources that we have at our disposal and, above all,
harnass our ability to think creatively and innovate.

the challenge
We wanted to hear your smart ideas for addressing the big
environmental issues facing our planet—and, specifically, how
Sony technologies might be repurposed to overcome them.
How can today’s
technology help us
make the most of
our planet’s resources?
10
We built OpenPlanetIdeas.com to tackle the challenge in six
distinct phases:
In the inspiration phase, we asked the community to help shape the
challenge by telling us about issues that matter to them. Drawing on
these inspirations, we began the concepting phase, in which people
shared concepts to address the challenge. These ideas were then built
upon and refined by community members and our expert panel. We
then moved to the evaluation phase, during which the community and
expert panel helped to determine the final concept.
Collaboration occurred through commenting and building upon
the work of others. You will see examples of both in this booklet.

Like it! Other, similar concepts that you might consider looking at
are Daily Footprints, Power Monitoring (my concept), Magic Number,
Sweep My House, and Carbon Footprint. I think we share the same
idea and just need to figure out the most effective way to implement it!

Our concept is based on the fact that the real problem is not a practical
one. The real problem is PEOPLE’S MENTALITY. So, our idea is based
on communicating with the single final user, making him SELF-AWARE
of his own eco-print.
The project consists of a simple core connected to the main electric/
water/gas/garbage unit counter that analyses each individual unit.
The results are sent wirelessly to the PSP®go, which visualises data in
terms of CO2
emissions, water consumption, and money ($/h) saved on
recycling materials. The core also gives back advice and virtual credits
(called eco-ins), to improve our behaviour, all in real time.

Recycling
revisited
We decided to focus on the separate collection of urban waste. Why
do citizens seem not-so-concerned about waste issues? How can we
stimulate people to recycle?
Using the Sony technology FeliCa, we conceived the GREEN FAMILY CARD:
a card assigned to each family with which they can record how much
“garbage” they recycle every year. They receive a score depending on
the weight of their recycling, and according to this score, the families
get some benefits. The overall objective is to sensitise public awareness
toward more sustainable urban waste management.
In the short run, the economic incentives represent the stimulus in order
to achieve, in the long run, a complete change of attitude in which
the separate collection of rubbish will be perceived, by the citizenship,
as the only way to go.

How can technology help us to design products, services, and
infrastructure with fewer environmental impacts in their manufacture,
use, and disposal?
Smarter designs could improve energy efficiency and reduce the
materials used in products, but that’s just a start. From car-sharing clubs
to cloud services, we can reduce environmental inputs and enjoy the
results. Technology can also help us rethink conventional approaches to
urban planning, building design, and food production and distribution.

Sanitation is not the most pleasing of subjects. Yet it needs to be
discussed. Some 2.5 billion people—nearly 40 percent of the world’s
population—still lack access to basic sanitation: They either don’t have
toilets or use latrines so filthy you can’t even imagine. This poop is full
of energy that could be harvested to create electricity. If this energy was
properly harvested, resources could be better used. The need for
water could be reduced (compared with conventional toilets) with on-site
water recycling. Electricity could be produced locally, hence reducing
the waste of electricity over long distances.

Also, the residual composted waste could be used as a fertilizer to increase

All we need to produce our energy and have a healthy relationship
with our environment around us … the light! We can make use of it
by using dye-sensitised solar cells in our houses, departments, offices,
and skyscrapers.
Can we replace all the windows on a building with sensitised solar
panels? This will start a new era in which skyscrapers are functional
inside and out, collecting the energy from the sun and using it for
the same building.
It is an elegant solution for any skyscraper or building that’s usable in
all cities around the globe and will make a dramatic change in favor of
the world.

Fresh water, fossil fuels, and other raw materials are the building

This theme explored how technology can make us, as a planet, achieve
more with less.
How can we provide food, sanitation, housing, and communications

in agriculture, industry, and in our homes? Could new ways of sharing

Let’s show people a better, cleaner world around them. Earth Plan B
is an application for PSP, iPhone, or even a camera or another device
that converts a picture/live stream of a place to what it could look like
if it was not polluted, congested, etc. It also gives professional hints
concerning environmental protection and main problems in their place
and country.
Many people just do not wonder why their surroundings look the way
they look, and in some places people do not even know their
environment could look any differently. People use huge cars, are stuck
in traffic jams, throw rubbish in the street, and leave other signs of
their activity, destroying the nature.
Earth Plan B gives them another view: People behave in a different
way and places around them look different thanks to this. Cars turn
to bicycles, and more people are in buses and trams than in cars.

Shoppers can scan a product’s barcode at the grocery store to learn
about the environmental impact of their potential purchase: Is it
organic? How much fuel was consumed to transport it? How much
water was necessary to produce it?
The Sustainable Shopper would help people assess the environmental
impact of foods (or other products) before purchasing. It could also
provide them with feedback on their overall purchase patterns and point
them to new options that match their goals. A key to implementation
would be gathering data for products in the marketplace. This could be
done through partnerships with one or more existing ratings systems
(organic and natural certifications, Walmart’s sustainability index, etc.).

It happens to many of us: We pass by an unpleasant scene of something
destroying our planet, but we feel powerless to stop it. Not everyone has
the motivation, knowledge, and resources to bring a civil action against
these cases. But as Planet Agents, we can report these kinds of incidents
by taking a photo or recording a video and uploading it to a website
that’s dedicated to environmental activism.
The website would gather reports from all over the world and process
the information in relevant groups made up of lawyers, environmental
activists, scientists, and green politicians who would investigate the
cases and try to solve the problems by collaborating. Consequently,
if there is no other way than the court of law, they could institute legal
proceedings as the final solution.

Imagine a city where you would be rewarded for kindness toward the
planet by using a magnetic card that reduces your tax obligations.
Imagine a nicely designed and useful dustbin, with a press that reduces
the volume of paper and plastic and a GPRS sensor that signals when
waste needs collecting. That could be made possible by dye-sensitised
solar cell!
What if, on a normal day, I go to the dustbin near my house. I push one
button for plastic waste and one for paper waste. I pass my magnetic
card for recycling credit, to reduce my taxes. The dustbin then compacts
the garbage, using energy from dye-sensitised solar cell. That way,
the garbage truck doesn’t need to pass as often, resulting in fewer
CO2
emissions. A GPRS sensor that uses solar energy of DSSC tells the
Operations Room when it’s necessary to collect waste. So nice!

This project aims to reduce water waste by household. Through peer-
to-peer technology, you can create a system to be installed in homes
that prevents excessive water consumption. The idea is to apply devices
at each point of access to water (faucets, toilet flush, etc.), so that people
can see the number of litres of water used. Every time consumption
exceeds 10 litres (enough for all types of domestic activity), the device
shuts the water off at your central point of loss. Because it will be
inconvenient to have to go every time to unlock the system, the user
soon learns to moderate water use. The benefits: Households lower
the cost of their water bills and avoid any unintentional flooding.

The biggest problem we face today is the fact that few people will
commit to long-term behavioral change. This water bottle refill station
is designed to remedy that. It is a sustainable, scaleable, and relatively
easy-to-adopt system.
These water bottle refill stations are not only convenient, but also reward
you with points for refilling and recycling. With proper game mechanics,
being green can truly be fun! In addition to bragging rights, people
can trade in points for tangible goods. Similar to rewards on a credit
card, these points could be provided by Sony or partnering sponsors
(a $5 Starbucks gift card, 10 percent off a Kindle, etc.). People consume,
that is inevitable. I want to create a platform that helps people to
make greener decisions without having to constantly educate them.
Consumerism and fun can be tools for change!

We believe that many towns would benefit from an improved recycling
system. Stations like these can be set up in various locations for people
to dispose of paper, plastic, glass, and metals. Digital technology stores
information on individual units, which are connected to a vacuum system
that transfers the waste to a central collection area on the outskirts of
town, reducing odors and keeping the town aesthetically acceptable.
Sony could create a device that helps to calculate the money saved from
the recycled items, either by weight or amount of material. People can
get paid via bank voucher or a bus ticket!

Perhaps use a FeliCa card instead of vouchers, so it could be used
as both a bus ticket or exchanged for money. This would save paper
and stop people getting vouchers. In Sainsbury’s, there are self-

adapted to do the same job, except for dispensing money or giving

My concept is an interconnected system to allow people to identify
species of plants or animals that they don’t know and at the same time
record their presence for conservation purposes.
Many people when they are out and about are interested in finding out
more about nature, but they find it difficult to identify the species they
see. This app would enable individuals with a mobile phone or CCTV
cameras to take a photographic or audio record of the species they find
and instantly identify them using the data stored by such people as the
RSPB (for British birds).
Once the species is identified, its presence at the given geographical
location would be recorded in a system such as Birdtrack (as run by
the British Trust for Ornithology for bird recording in the UK). This would
provide valuable information that can be then used in conservation.
Individuals would learn more about wildlife identification and existing
CCTV cameras could be given a second purpose.

Great concept! This idea was short-listed
because it could enable people to become
more connected to nature and spread
awareness of it. I and the expert panel found
this concept a useful tool for people to have
access to education and understanding of
the natural world.
There is, however, room for development
as well, and I can already see some good
discussions going on. One aspect that should
be considered for sure is the threats and risks
involved of having a database like this. How
could security be ensured?
Good luck with developing this concept, and
we look forward to re-evaluating it!

I like the idea of creating an app rather than
another piece of resource-hungry hardware.
What concerns me, though, is that getting
close enough to a bird or an animal to really
apply audio/video capture on a mobile phone
may be too invasive and not environmentally
ethical. Tread lightly. Leave no trace. The
proposed use with existing CCTV cameras
seems much more appropriate.
The app/mobile phone part of this concept
might also be used for plant identification with
linked information on medicinal use, edible
applications, etc.

I think this idea could really work great for
local commuting, too. In some countries it is
a prestigeous thing to have one’s own car
and to show off in it every day, so it is very
hard to talk someone into leaving it to take a
train. Ideas like this could help make a change
and show people that they belong to the city,
show them different info about what surrounds
them on their way, which building is new, what
restaurant is worth going to that they have
never heard about, what’s in the cinema they
are passing by every day…
I am thinking of making it a piece of daily city
life—more convenient and free, but not as
“comfortable” as the car. It could help all the
undecided people choose our greener side
by showing them that they have more freedom
when they travel by train and that the comfort
of their car is something hijacked from the
last century.

I like this concept, which a few other
contributors have also touched upon. Using
technology to avoid use of several vehicles

could really make a big improvement to

The scheme participant could list the journeys

A low - cost, seed - size device would be inserted inside trees connected
via satellite to a central dispatch, which will be responsible for
monitoring them.
The operation of the devices would be very simple: They will have a
cavity with some kind of temperature-sensitive connector (such a small
amount of flammable gas or any kind of element that expands with
heat) which triggers an alarm. This connects to the central dispatch and
tells where the wildfire is, which trees are involved, and how quickly it is
expanding, so forest - protecting departments will notice instantly and
can send help more fast. They could use solar energy.

Brilliant! I just looked at the concept and saw
tremendous potential. This is a neat solution
because I imagine it could be possible to use
an energy source which is activated (and even
assisted) by the presence of heat and then
use a transmitter of the same type as is used
for ocean-going yachts when they capsize.
The devices could potentially be deployed
from the air, designed to catch in the canopy
of the trees, which would be highly cost-
effective, too.

I love the idea of technological hitchhiking
and linking people up with green outlets and
restaurants via GPS and location-based
information. Nice one.

Statistics are always great in programmes like
that. A CO2
meter that counts whether you’ve
exceeded the average CO2
emissions per
person a day or not would be a great way to
wake a competitive spirit and start to live more
eco-friendly.

Although the idea sounds simple, it is also
very effective! I really liked it. I think it will
increase awareness of environmental issues
and provide a practice in a detailed way for
our daily lives, which is so important and
necessary. With easy accessibility to this
application, it will make being green much
easier, especially in city life.

This should be easy enough to do, since it is
mostly about adding a new layer to existing
technology. I’d suggest trying to make it a
free download for existing GPS systems. If
you make the information accessible enough,
many people will try it and use it. Great idea!

6. WaterSource
Which technology are you repurposing?
This system builds on several existing tools:
The Water Quality Reporter in South
Africa tests and reports water quality over
SMS; Umande Trust in Kenya maps water
sources in informal settlements by their GPS
coordinates; and Ushahidi collects SMS
reports of problems and maps them visually to
show trends by location.
What kind of behavioural change does this
require, if any?
1. Individual behavioural change
2. Community-driven behavioural change
Which part of the world would this concept
be best applied in?
Developing world
WaterSource is dynamic map of drinking water. It would allow people in
water-challenged areas to check water conditions at different locations
via SMS, and it would create a community system for improving and
monitoring water supplies.
In areas across the developing world, water access is highly variable
from day to day. People draw from a range of water sources, such
as ponds, wells, rivers, government taps, water kiosks, and delivery
businesses. The availability, price, and quality of the water fluctuates
during rainy seasons and drought. The landscape is ever-changing,
and people rely on word of mouth to know what’s happening.

I really like the use of cell phones and SMS
beyond making calls and texting, as well as
the use of existing technologies and tools like
Ushahidi. This concept integrates information
and communities very nicely, and it highlights
the importance of access to drinking water—
an integrated system that people in the
developed world might take for granted.

This concept is quite important and inspiring.
Having gone to Kenya and used the mobile
network, I know that in the places where
people really need to know where to go for
water don’t have cell phone service.
This concept could be enhanced by allowing
mobile updates of alternative places to obtain
water. Water that’s available in communities is
optimal, but for those places where the water
table is low but high elsewhere it would be
great to let people know. One thing you may
want to keep in mind is that pre-paid cells
(at least in Kenya) are the preferred means
of communication versus the US method of
month-to-month.

Sally, you speak with such passion about
this important topic. The lack of safe water
supplies for people throughout the world is
something that really upsets me, but it seems
you have some up with a great concept. Best
of luck with this!

7. Greenbook
Which technology are you repurposing?
On a PSP or smartphone, you can read
articles or find out about activities around
you to be inspired and join a challenge.
The core technology includes the GPS
location, the time that the event last, tags
to connect news and local project and  level
required to participate to this event. This
relates to location-based services and gaming
that bridges the offline/online world, hence
bringing people outside to participate in an
ecological project.
What kind of behavioural change does this
require, if any?

Greenbook is an idea for an application that matches people with local
projects. Through using the latest geolocation and gaming technology,
it will be designed to make volunteering quicker, easier, and more social.
In doing so, it has the potential to bring new people to volunteering and
change our communities and environment for the better.
When the user opens up Greenbook, they can see the latest news on
volunteering activities and local projects around their area on a map
and engage in discussions with other members. There is also an
opportunity for the user to progress to different levels, as they participate
in more activities, getting additional points while also developing their
skills and generating more and more benefits for the environment.
News is there to initiate and motivate action. When we see that
a little step can have an influence, then we are motivated to do that
little step and keep helping. Little step by little step, big things
can be achieved.

This innovative idea could change how people
engage in volunteer work, enabling more
casual volunteering and improving charities’
resources. It could also bring communities
closer together by getting individuals more
engaged in their environments. It is not well
addressed apart from Thebigsociety.co.uk,
whose success I am not sure of.
One thing that needs to be cleared is injury
liability when engaging in charitable activities
and also some control of the actions to
avoid malicious people from creating fake
charitable tasks. This is mainly a software
development project with some technical
aspects: development of server components
to support the network, client applications for
GPS-enabled phones.

I love this concept! Congrats, Siniuc! ;)
How about a possibility of reporting some
environmental issues from your place and
getting hints how to organize help—network
of volunteers, what to do in different cases,
etc.? Sometimes you feel helpless and
there are no people or organizations already
doing it. Maybe there could be some “waiting
room” of issues or solutions, or a think tank
for single users?

COngratulations from Expert panel
Morgan David, Head of Sony Broadcast and Professional Research Labs
“We feel this is an exciting concept that will enable people
to come together to support and give their time and
energy to their local area and address some of the key
environmental challenges that we are facing today.”
Jean-Paul Jeanrenaud, Corporate Relations Director, WWF International
“We chose this idea because of its huge potential to bring
people together and motivate participation. We believe
Greenbook will breathe new life into the age-old concept
of volunteering through the application of cutting-edge
social technology.”
Tom Hulme, Design Director, IDEO
“I fully support Greenbook and am excited at what it
will become. It taps into the rise of the participatory

I think that the force of this project is that the
number of PSP and other gameconsole users
is going to increase, especially in developing
countries, and it may be a powerful tool to
get people involved into environnemental
questions, especially youngsters. But this
force is also its weakness: the green-washing
risk is very high.
I might try to contribute about incentive.
Perhaps it would be useful, in this aspect
of incentive, to benchmark customer card,
serious game, treasure hunting, murder
party, charity business, and volunteering?
With respect, gaming fuel is to win! And
it’s easy to get tired of losing (or winning)
because there is an intense competition
among a lot of games. Gamers don’t stop
playing, but they move to other games and
modify the allocation of time dedicated to
gaming. They are also very sensitive to
the activities of their friends, family, and
acquaintances.

Great job! I still remember when Greenbook
was a website, and I like how you’ve refined
your concept.
You might find this inspiring: Ecomotion.org
.uk, which is “a social enterprise that
empowers the individual, promotes
ethical business, and supports groups,
organisations, and entrepreneurs.”
To address our expert panelist’s question
about the use of social media like Facebook,
I highly recommend Jumo.com. Jumo is a
nonprofit social network for charities, and it
was launced by a Facebook co-founder not
too long ago. It “connects people to issues,
organizations and individuals relevant to
them to foster lasting relationships and
meaningful action.” I hope to see it move
people to action beyond just “liking” or
“following.”
Good luck with your concept!

realisation
87realisation
Since we announced Greenbook as the final concept on January 24,
2011, the realisation journey has begun. We are in regular dialogue
with the creator of Greenbook, Paul Frigout, and we are investigating,
researching, and brainstorming to begin planning the next steps
of development. Join the realisation journey and get involved in the
discussions!
The realisation Phase
Activities and events include:
Greenbook Development Day
The team spent a day focused on innovation brainstorming about how
to refine several aspects of the Greenbook concept. Paul was joined
by Sony engineers and designers, WWF environmental experts, IDEO
designers, potential partners, and key Open Planet Ideas community
members in an effort to help him further to realise his concept.
Open Planet Ideas Facebook Discussions
As we refine the concept further, we continue to post questions and
solicit feedback about Greenbook on our fanpage. Please join us!
Weekly Realisation Updates
Get the latest news about the Greenbook project’s progress at
OpenPlanetIdeas.com.
Volunteering Sector Outreach
We’re talking with various volunteering organisations to make sure that
Greenbook is useful for them—and fun for users.
87
The Development Day brought together more than 40 enthusiasts from
all over Europe, including many Greenbook fans from Sony, WWF, IDEO,
the Open Planet Ideas community, and volunteering organisations. We
held many insightful discussions about the concept.
The gathering included everything from presentations to brainstorms.
Paul shared his vision of Greenbook alongside the Greenbook Project
Team leader, who shared the Sony technological side. Volunteering
organisations shared their insights, identifying potential challenges and
opportunities.
Our creativity was tested (but we delivered) in breakout focus groups
that identified key areas for further refinement of Greenbook:

	 User experience for volunteering organisations
	 User experience for volunteers
	 Geo-locations and personal attributes
	 Gaming and rewards
	Content
Long-term scenario planning for post-realisation stage
These sessions were very successful in generating new ideas!
Greenbook Development Day
88 realisation
89realisation
90 realisation
Some of the most imaginative and resourceful ideas come from
unexpected sources, such as Facebook. We’re still posting questions
about how Greenbook should move forward. (If you’ve already
posted comments there, thank you!) Topics range from Greenbook’s
functionality to the nature of volunteering and what types of charities
could be involved.
We believe that your feedback is essential to shaping ideas, and we
will continue to draw from the community’s suggestions over the coming
weeks and months.
Joining the journey on Facebook
90
91realisation
Whether and how well Greenbook succeeds depends heavily on
the nonprofit sector. So we’re talking with organisations that rely on
volunteers to figure out how the concept could be improved. Timebank,
Volunteering UK, Youth Action Network, NSPCC, Bright One, and other
groups are sharing their feedback and asking questions such as:
What features will be needed to make Greenbook an everyday
app for people who want to volunteer?
What features are required to make using Greenbook attractive
and convenient for organisations that rely on voluntary support?
Does Greenbook need to have different features for different
	 types of organisations?
From your experience, what awards or incentives would best
encourage volunteers to use Greenbook regularly?
What data fields will be required for each volunteering project
posted on Greenbook (e.g., project name, category, location, time
	 required, skills required, etc.)?
So far, their feedback on Greenbook—and the Open Planet Ideas
challenge—has been very positive. They believe it has potential to
inspire a new batch of motivated volunteers!
Volunteering sector outreach
91
92
Helen Walker, CEO for the national volunteering charity Timebank:
“At Timebank, we are committed to exploring ways of engaging new
audiences in volunteering. This winning concept takes advantage of
the increasing use of smart phones and the techniques used in social
gaming to engage with a new generation of volunteers. This use of
cutting-edge social networking technology could be a powerful tool
to enable volunteering to become part of the fabric of everyday life.
Think of it as the ‘big society’ app.”
Rosie Bristow, Guardian Sustainable Business:
“Social media is constantly evolving and changing the way we
communicate. Some companies have embraced the developments
and benefited from the in-depth engagement it brings, but many
seem to be struggling to keep up. Yet there are those who are doing
it well, PepsiCo’s Pepsi Refresh Project, Ford’s the People’s Fleet, and
Sony’s Open Planet Ideas, are great examples.”
David Bott, Director of Innovation Programmes, Technology
Strategy Board:
“Harnessing people’s ideas and then getting a wider community to
help develop the better ones is not a new idea, but modern technology
allows it to be done on global scale. This Sony project, with a focus on
efficient resource use, is a good one to browse through and realise quite
how informed and imaginative people can be.”
BUZZ about the project
realisation92
93realisation
Scott Billings, Design Week:
“Crowdsourcing is more likely to generate ideas and approaches or
inventions than work that can be implemented in a commercial context.
It invariably needs dialogue and nurturing for them to become real.
This is the sentiment behind a joint initiative between Sony and WWF
to find ways to repurpose existing Sony technology to tackle
environmental issues.”
Charles O’Malley, Head of Europe, AccountAbility:
“Open Planet Ideas transforms sustainability communications into
co-creation and innovation. Running this kind of initiative can be scary
for big companies. It’s risky, unpredictable, and the results cannot be
guaranteed, and that’s what makes it authentic and trustworthy.
We will see much more of this in the future—all credit to Sony and
WWF for showing the way for others.”
John Grant, author of The Green Marketing Manifesto and Co-
Opportunity: Join Up for a Sustainable, Resilient, Prosperous World:
“There is certainly a new willingness and openness in business. It
has been a very long haul, but business has genuinely started to
think along lines that are compatible with sustainability rather than
just paying lip service to it. Congratulations in breaking through the
greenwash/indifference barrier with something fresh and authentic!”

  • 8. 8 The Sony-WWF challenge was hosted by IDEO, a global design and innovation consultancy that creates impact through design. IDEO designed the OpenIDEO platform and facilitated the challenge. Find out more at www.ideo.com. Why is Sony doing this? As one of the world’s biggest digital entertainment companies, we at Sony believe passionately in using technology to do good things, such as solving some of the environmental issues facing the planet. We also believe that people can make really amazing things happen when they get together! We created Open Planet Ideas to reflect this philosophy — and as part of our commitment to help create a more sustainable environment for current and future generations. We also built Open Planet Ideas to show that communities can play a vital role in accelerating the pace of technological, social, and environmental change. We’ve set strict sustainability targets for ourselves that include lowering energy consumption, reusing materials, and recycling more. We’re looking beyond our products to support eco-initiatives that could benefit from using our technologies. Find out more at www.sony.co.uk/eco. Why is WWF doing this? At WWF we’re always open to new ideas, particularly those that help raise awareness of environmental issues, that inspire solution- oriented responses, and that ultimately benefit our one and only planet. We also believe that we can’t do everything alone. That’s why we have a long and successful track record of working with others (including some of the world’s leading companies) to raise standards, drive sustainability, and bring about positive change.  WWF’s corporate partners use their voices to make change happen. This is exactly what Open Planet Ideas is about: tapping into the amazing potential of open-source technology to let more voices be heard and to make a positive contribution to the environment and to society. Our vision is one of a world where people live in harmony with nature. We’re confident that by collaborating constructively we can and will solve current problems—especially if we use the great tools and resources that we have at our disposal and, above all, harnass our ability to think creatively and innovate. Find out more at www.panda.org. Introduction
  • 9. 9Introduction the challenge We wanted to hear your smart ideas for addressing the big environmental issues facing our planet—and, specifically, how Sony technologies might be repurposed to overcome them. How can today’s technology help us make the most of our planet’s resources?
  • 10. 10 We built OpenPlanetIdeas.com to tackle the challenge in six distinct phases: In the inspiration phase, we asked the community to help shape the challenge by telling us about issues that matter to them. Drawing on these inspirations, we began the concepting phase, in which people shared concepts to address the challenge. These ideas were then built upon and refined by community members and our expert panel. We then moved to the evaluation phase, during which the community and expert panel helped to determine the final concept. Collaboration occurred through commenting and building upon the work of others. Other, similar concepts that you might consider looking at are Daily Footprints, Power Monitoring (my concept), Magic Number, Sweep My House, and Carbon Footprint. I think we share the same idea and just need to figure out the most effective way to implement it! related Themes Our concept is based on the fact that the real problem is not a practical one. The real problem is PEOPLE’S MENTALITY. So, our idea is based on communicating with the single final user, making him SELF-AWARE of his own eco-print. The project consists of a simple core connected to the main electric/ water/gas/garbage unit counter that analyses each individual unit. The results are sent wirelessly to the PSP®go, which visualises data in terms of CO2 emissions, water consumption, and money ($/h) saved on recycling materials. The core also gives back advice and virtual credits (called eco-ins), to improve our behaviour, all in real time. Changing Behaviour waste not 40
  • 41. 41 Changing attitudes is not impossible! Author MaGiuNiSe Joined: November 2010 1,062 views 46 applause 12 comments concepting concept title related Themes Changing Behaviour Recycling revisited We decided to focus on the separate collection of urban waste. Why do citizens seem not-so-concerned about waste issues? How can we stimulate people to recycle? Using the Sony technology FeliCa, we conceived the GREEN FAMILY CARD: a card assigned to each family with which they can record how much “garbage” they recycle every year. They receive a score depending on the weight of their recycling, and according to this score, the families get some benefits. The overall objective is to sensitise public awareness toward more sustainable urban waste management. In the short run, the economic incentives represent the stimulus in order to achieve, in the long run, a complete change of attitude in which the separate collection of rubbish will be perceived, by the citizenship, as the only way to go. 41
  • 43. 43concepting How can technology help us to design products, services, and infrastructure with fewer environmental impacts in their manufacture, use, and disposal? Smarter designs could improve energy efficiency and reduce the materials used in products, but that’s just a start. From car-sharing clubs to cloud services, we can reduce environmental inputs and enjoy the results. Technology can also help us rethink conventional approaches to urban planning, building design, and food production and distribution. 43
  • 44. 44 Sanitation is sexy and green Author siniuc (aka Paul Frigout) Joined: November 2010 406 views 11 applause 6 comments concepting concept title related Themes Sanitation is not the most pleasing of subjects. Yet it needs to be discussed. Some 2.5 billion people—nearly 40 percent of the world’s population—still lack access to basic sanitation: They either don’t have toilets or use latrines so filthy you can’t even imagine. This poop is full of energy that could be harvested to create electricity. If this energy was properly harvested, resources could be better used. Many people just do not wonder why their surroundings look the way they look, and in some places people do not even know their environment could look any differently. People use huge cars, are stuck in traffic jams, throw rubbish in the street, and leave other signs of their activity, destroying the nature. Through peer- to-peer technology, you can create a system to be installed in homes that prevents excessive water consumption. The idea is to apply devices at each point of access to water (faucets, toilet flush, etc.), so that people can see the number of litres of water used. Every time consumption exceeds 10 litres (enough for all types of domestic activity), the device shuts the water off at your central point of loss. Because it will be inconvenient to have to go every time to unlock the system, the user soon learns to moderate water use. The benefits: Households lower the cost of their water bills and avoid any unintentional flooding. Comment by Dax Lovegrove November 23, 2010, 04:47PM EXPERT PANELIST This tackles a real hot spot. Developed world Which technology are you repurposing? This idea would use the image recording abilities of mobile technology (or CCTV), along with the location data from GPS and the information and recording databases available from wildlife conservation organisations. evaluation concept title My concept is an interconnected system to allow people to identify species of plants or animals that they don’t know and at the same time record their presence for conservation purposes. Many people when they are out and about are interested in finding out more about nature, but they find it difficult to identify the species they see. This app would enable individuals with a mobile phone or CCTV cameras to take a photographic or audio record of the species they find and instantly identify them using the data stored by such people as the RSPB (for British birds). Once the species is identified, its presence at the given geographical location would be recorded in a system such as Birdtrack (as run by the British Trust for Ornithology for bird recording in the UK). This would provide valuable information that can be then used in conservation. Individuals would learn more about wildlife identification and existing CCTV cameras could be given a second purpose. 66

  • 78. 7. Greenbook Which technology are you repurposing? On a PSP or smartphone, you can read articles or find out about activities around you to be inspired and join a challenge. The core technology includes the GPS location, the time that the event last, tags to connect news and local project and  level required to participate to this event. This relates to location-based services and gaming that bridges the offline/online world, hence bringing people outside to participate in an ecological project. What kind of behavioural change does this require, if any? Community-driven behavioural change Which part of the world would this concept be best applied in? Developed and developing world 78 evaluation concept title Greenbook is an idea for an application that matches people with local projects. Through using the latest geolocation and gaming technology, it will be designed to make volunteering quicker, easier, and more social. In doing so, it has the potential to bring new people to volunteering and change our communities and environment for the better. When the user opens up Greenbook, they can see the latest news on volunteering activities and local projects around their area on a map and engage in discussions with other members. There is also an opportunity for the user to progress to different levels, as they participate in more activities, getting additional points while also developing their skills and generating more and more benefits for the environment. News is there to initiate and motivate action. When we see that a little step can have an influence, then we are motivated to do that little step and keep helping. Little step by little step, big things can be achieved.

It could also bring communities closer together by getting individuals more engaged in their environments. It is not well addressed apart from Thebigsociety.co.uk, whose success I am not sure of. One thing that needs to be cleared is injury liability when engaging in charitable activities and also some control of the actions to avoid malicious people from creating fake charitable tasks. This is mainly a software development project with some technical aspects: development of server components to support the network, client applications for GPS-enabled phones. Congrats, Siniuc! ;) How about a possibility of reporting some environmental issues from your place and getting hints how to organize help—network of volunteers, what to do in different cases, etc.? Sometimes you feel helpless and there are no people or organizations already doing it. Maybe there could be some “waiting room” of issues or solutions, or a think tank for single users? 1. • 81. 81 The Expert Panel unanimously chose Greenbook as the final concept of the first Open Planet Ideas challenge. final concept Congratulations to Paul Frigout and to everyone who evaluated, commented, and collaborated on his Greenbook concept! The Expert Panel chose Greenbook because of its originality and potential impact and because it not only matched our expertise and technologies, but also the community’s interest in adopting and developing the idea. The final concept Phase 81
  • 82. COngratulations from Expert panel Morgan David, Head of Sony Broadcast and Professional Research Labs “We feel this is an exciting concept that will enable people to come together to support and give their time and energy to their local area and address some of the key environmental challenges that we are facing today.” Jean-Paul Jeanrenaud, Corporate Relations Director, WWF International “We chose this idea because of its huge potential to bring people together and motivate participation. We believe Greenbook will breathe new life into the age-old concept of volunteering through the application of cutting-edge social technology.” Tom Hulme, Design Director, IDEO “I fully support Greenbook and am excited at what it will become. It taps into the rise of the participatory economy and shows how we can all make a real difference by contributing snippets of time here and there. If enough people contribute in this way, it will have a big impact.” 82 final concept 82
  • 83. Congratulations from the Community 83 COmmENTS Haiyan Zhang January 26, 2011, 12:27PM I love the gaming aspect of this concept, making sustainability fun and rewarding. Reminds me of how Foursquare check-ins are prompting store owners to offer discounts when people check in at their establishments and users are changing their venues to get the discounts. Meena Kadri January 25, 2011, 05:19PM Rock on, Paul! Fabulous concept to encourage behavioural change. Wishing you well in the Realisation phase that awaits. Matt Farrar January 24, 2011, 05:46PM Congratulations, siniuc! Really excited by this concept. The volunteer sector is crying out for innovation like this. I want it made already, so I can download it. Susan January 24, 2011, 05:40PM Congrats, siniuc! This has been my favourite all along! Can’t wait to see it being realised, as I will definitely be using it. :) theile dominique January 14, 2011, 02:12PM I think that the force of this project is that the number of PSP and other gameconsole users is going to increase, especially in developing countries, and it may be a powerful tool to get people involved into environnemental questions, especially youngsters. But this force is also its weakness: the green-washing risk is very high. I might try to contribute about incentive. Perhaps it would be useful, in this aspect of incentive, to benchmark customer card, serious game, treasure hunting, murder party, charity business, and volunteering? With respect, gaming fuel is to win! And it’s easy to get tired of losing (or winning) because there is an intense competition among a lot of games. Gamers don’t stop playing, but they move to other games and modify the allocation of time dedicated to gaming. They are also very sensitive to the activities of their friends, family, and acquaintances. Thao Vo January 05, 2011, 03:10AM Great job! I still remember when Greenbook was a website, and I like how you’ve refined your concept. You might find this inspiring: Ecomotion.org .uk, which is “a social enterprise that empowers the individual, promotes ethical business, and supports groups, organisations, and entrepreneurs.” To address our expert panelist’s question about the use of social media like Facebook, I highly recommend Jumo.com. Jumo is a nonprofit social network for charities, and it was launced by a Facebook co-founder not too long ago. It “connects people to issues, organizations and individuals relevant to them to foster lasting relationships and meaningful action.” I hope to see it move people to action beyond just “liking” or “following.” Good luck with your concept! final concept

  • 87. 87realisation Since we announced Greenbook as the final concept on January 24, 2011, the realisation journey has begun. We are in regular dialogue with the creator of Greenbook, Paul Frigout, and we are investigating, researching, and brainstorming to begin planning the next steps of development. Join the realisation journey and get involved in the discussions! The realisation Phase Activities and events include: Greenbook Development Day The team spent a day focused on innovation brainstorming about how to refine several aspects of the Greenbook concept. Paul was joined by Sony engineers and designers, WWF environmental experts, IDEO designers, potential partners, and key Open Planet Ideas community members in an effort to help him further to realise his concept. Open Planet Ideas Facebook Discussions As we refine the concept further, we continue to post questions and solicit feedback about Greenbook on our fanpage. Please join us! Weekly Realisation Updates Get the latest news about the Greenbook project’s progress at OpenPlanetIdeas.com. Volunteering Sector Outreach We’re talking with various volunteering organisations to make sure that Greenbook is useful for them—and fun for users. 87
  • 88. The Development Day brought together more than 40 enthusiasts from all over Europe, including many Greenbook fans from Sony, WWF, IDEO, the Open Planet Ideas community, and volunteering organisations. We held many insightful discussions about the concept. The gathering included everything from presentations to brainstorms. Paul shared his vision of Greenbook alongside the Greenbook Project Team leader, who shared the Sony technological side. Volunteering organisations shared their insights, identifying potential challenges and opportunities. Our creativity was tested (but we delivered) in breakout focus groups that identified key areas for further refinement of Greenbook: User experience for volunteering organisations User experience for volunteers Geo-locations and personal attributes Gaming and rewards Content Long-term scenario planning for post-realisation stage These sessions were very successful in generating new ideas! • 90. 90 realisation Some of the most imaginative and resourceful ideas come from unexpected sources, such as Facebook. We’re still posting questions about how Greenbook should move forward. (If you’ve already posted comments there, thank you!) Topics range from Greenbook’s functionality to the nature of volunteering and what types of charities could be involved. We believe that your feedback is essential to shaping ideas, and we will continue to draw from the community’s suggestions over the coming weeks and months. Joining the journey on Facebook 90
  • 91. 91realisation Whether and how well Greenbook succeeds depends heavily on the nonprofit sector. So we’re talking with organisations that rely on volunteers to figure out how the concept could be improved. Timebank, Volunteering UK, Youth Action Network, NSPCC, Bright One, and other groups are sharing their feedback and asking questions such as: What features will be needed to make Greenbook an everyday app for people who want to volunteer? What features are required to make using Greenbook attractive and convenient for organisations that rely on voluntary support? Does Greenbook need to have different features for different types of organisations? From your experience, what awards or incentives would best encourage volunteers to use Greenbook regularly? What data fields will be required for each volunteering project posted on Greenbook (e.g., project name, category, location, time required, skills required, etc.)? So far, their feedback on Greenbook—and the Open Planet Ideas challenge—has been very positive. They believe it has potential to inspire a new batch of motivated volunteers! • 92. 92 Helen Walker, CEO for the national volunteering charity Timebank: “At Timebank, we are committed to exploring ways of engaging new audiences in volunteering. This winning concept takes advantage of the increasing use of smart phones and the techniques used in social gaming to engage with a new generation of volunteers. This use of cutting-edge social networking technology could be a powerful tool to enable volunteering to become part of the fabric of everyday life. Think of it as the ‘big society’ app.” Rosie Bristow, Guardian Sustainable Business: “Social media is constantly evolving and changing the way we communicate. Some companies have embraced the developments and benefited from the in-depth engagement it brings, but many seem to be struggling to keep up. Yet there are those who are doing it well, PepsiCo’s Pepsi Refresh Project, Ford’s the People’s Fleet, and Sony’s Open Planet Ideas, are great examples.” David Bott, Director of Innovation Programmes, Technology Strategy Board: “Harnessing people’s ideas and then getting a wider community to help develop the better ones is not a new idea, but modern technology allows it to be done on global scale. This Sony project, with a focus on efficient resource use, is a good one to browse through and realise quite how informed and imaginative people can be.” BUZZ about the project realisation92
  • 93. 93realisation Scott Billings, Design Week: “Crowdsourcing is more likely to generate ideas and approaches or inventions than work that can be implemented in a commercial context. It invariably needs dialogue and nurturing for them to become real. This is the sentiment behind a joint initiative between Sony and WWF to find ways to repurpose existing Sony technology to tackle environmental issues.” Charles O’Malley, Head of Europe, AccountAbility: “Open Planet Ideas transforms sustainability communications into co-creation and innovation. Running this kind of initiative can be scary for big companies. It’s risky, unpredictable, and the results cannot be guaranteed, and that’s what makes it authentic and trustworthy. We will see much more of this in the future—all credit to Sony and WWF for showing the way for others.” John Grant, author of The Green Marketing Manifesto and Co- Opportunity: Join Up for a Sustainable, Resilient, Prosperous World: “There is certainly a new willingness and openness in business. It has been a very long haul, but business has genuinely started to think along lines that are compatible with sustainability rather than just paying lip service to it. Congratulations in breaking through the greenwash/indifference barrier with something fresh and authentic!” 93
