12. Praxis I
• June 2013 - SBE adopted Praxis Core Academic
Skills for Educators to replace Praxis I PPST for
teacher education admission.

16. Licensure Exam Requirements
• Effective July 1, 2014, all IHE program completers
(in-state and out-of-state) recommended for the
initial license must take the SBE approved
licensure exam for the recommended teaching
area.
• Individuals recommended for multiple initial license
areas on Form V must test in each licensure area.
• Applicant may test in one area, apply, receive the
tested license area, and then add other areas later by
24 semester hour policy.

17. Licensure Exam Requirements
• Passing the licensure exam is required to convert
from Standard Professional I to Standard
Professional II license.
• NCGS 115C-296 allows the initial license applicant to
be licensed in middle, secondary, and K-12 areas
without passing the test prior to the IHE licensure
recommendation
• Failing scores should be sent in with the Form V to show
the test has been attempted.
• This does not apply to licensure in Elementary
and Special Education.

Curriculum for NC Exams
• Effective October 1, 2014,
– IHE Program/Licensure Completers must pass the
exams to be recommended for Elementary (K-6) &/or
Special Education: General Curriculum (K-12)
licenses.
– Out of state teachers must also pass the exam if
applying for a NC license in those areas.
• < 3 years experience must pass before being licensed.
• > 3 years experience will have 1 year to teach while meeting
the testing requirement.
