King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz

3. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
 King Abdullah was born in Riyadh in 1924, and
received his early education at the royal court.
 His years spent living in the desert with Bedouin
tribes taught him their values of
honor, simplicity, generosity, and bravery, and
instilled in him the desire to assist in the
development of his people.
 King Abdullah is also Prime Minister of the
Council of Ministers and Commander of the
National Guard.

4. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
 King Abdullah’s notable achievements in this area
include the launch of four mega economic cities.
 King Abdullah has also sought to resolve conflicts
in the Arab and Islamic world.
 Peace in the Middle East and the plight of the
Palestinians are of particular concern to him.
 He has played a key role in brokering agreements
for a Palestinian national unity government and a
reconciliation accord between Sudan and Chad
on Darfur.

Difference to Rizal:
 Self development was influenced by his father
 Used his power to help and manage things
concerning them.
 While Rizal, has to study and experienced all
unfair treatments from the Spaniards.
Similarities to Rizal:
 They ought for peace.
 Profound values among his fellow countrymen.

Fukuzawa Yukichi

7. Japan
 He was a Japanese Author, Enlightenment Writer,
Translator, Entrepreneur, and Journalist.
 His ideas about government and social
institutions made a lasting impression on a rapidly
changing Japan during the Meiji Era.
 Fukuzawa was one of the most influential people
ever that helped Japan modernize into the
country it is today.
 He never accepted any high position and stayed
a normal Japanese citizen for his whole life.

 By the time of his death, he is regarded as one of
the founders of modern Japan.
 He is called a Japanese Voltaire.
 Fukuzawa was soon regarded as the foremost
expert on all things western, leading him to
conclude that his mission in life was to educate
his countrymen in new ways of thinking in order
to enable Japan to resist European imperialism.
 His most lasting principle, "national independence
through personal independence." Through
personal independence, an individual does not
have to depend on the strength of another.

Difference to Rizal:
 Fukuzawa shared to every Japanese all what he
learned and experienced through his books, he
translated textbook from Dutch/English to
Nihonggo so Japanese can easily understand it.
 He came from a samurai clan, while Rizal, he
studied for his personal causes and came from a
normal and simple family.

Similarities to Rizal:
 They are both authors of their books and
influenced their people through these.
 They both want their countries to be independent
from those who want to imperialize it.
 They studied foreign cultures, particularly
languages, and adopt it to their own.
 They both appears on their country’s money
(Fukuzawa on 10,000 yen bill, rizal on 1 peso
coin)

 He served as the guard of prisoners at the Bytča
castle where he met a prisoner called Tomáš
Uhorčík, the captain of the highwaymen from
Kysuce.
 After he joined his group as Tomáš escaped, he
was elected to became the captain of the group.
 But his captainship did not last longer a year, he
was arrested by the soldiers of Liptov and after a
trial that also involved torture, he was executed.

 He was called the Slovak Robin Hood.
 “He took from the rich and gave to the poor” is the
famous statement associated with him.
 This probably best-known Highwayman in the
whole Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Difference to Rizal:
 During the short period of his captainship he
made a lot of hold-ups and robberies.
 He surely belonged to “extremely dangerous
elements” because only those were executed by
hanging on a hook.
 Rizal didn’t act that way in able to help his
people.
Similarities to Rizal:
 They were both executed after their trials.
 They both want to help less fortunate people.

Leonidas “Son of the Lion”, King of Sparta

16. Greece
 Leonidas was a 5th century B.C. Spartan
military King who bravely led a small force of
Greeks – mostly Spartan (the famous 300).
 He is noted for his heroic stand against the
Persians at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480.
 Seeing the hopelessness of the situation, he sent
most of his troops in retreat and with his 300-man
royal guard with stood the Persian Army for two
days, battling valiantly to the last man.
 He became the object of a hero cult at
Sparta, and he stands as The Epitome of bravery
against overwhelming odds.

Difference to Rizal:
 Leonidas was a Military King that used to fight
and kill enemies that wants to destroy
Sparta, while Rizal didn’t kill anyone just to
protect his land
Similarities to Rizal:
 They were both brave to fight for the country.
 Though Rizal didn’t do what Leonidas’ way to
fight, but still they are willing to give their life just
for their country.

Kuzma Minin

19. Russia
 The merchant from Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, who
became a national hero for his role in defending the
country against the Polish invasion in the early-17th
century.
 He was a prosperous butcher (meat trader) n their
city.
 He oversees the handling of the public funds donated
by them to raise and equip the Second Volunteer
Army.
 Minin distinguished himself as a skilled commander
and was made a nobleman and member of the Boyar
Duma under the newly elected Tsar Michael
Romanov.

Difference and Similarities to Rizal:
 Like Jose Rizal, Kuzma Minin was defended his
country against the Polish invasion and give his
loyalty for his King, as well as to his country.
Being loyal like Jose Rizal did in our country,
signified for their similarities as a hero even if they
fought for their country in a different way.

21. Venezuela
Sebastián Francisco de Miranda Rodríguez

22. Venezuela
 He was a Venezuelan Revolutionary.
 He prepared an expedition to invade Venezuela
and free it from Spanish rule, and he brought
along the flag that would become today’s national
symbol.
 Even though his expedition failed, he was
regarded as a forerunner of Simón Bolívar, who
during the Spanish American wars of
independence successfully liberated a vast
portion of South America.

Difference and Similarities to Rizal:
 They both seek independence for their country.
 Miranda’s expedition failed but Rizal never.
 They both came from a wealthy family, went to
finest private schools, but experienced
discrimination because of their race.
 Miranda died in prison, while Rizal was executed.

24. Argentina
Rodolfo Jorge Walsh

25. Argentina
 He is a writer, activist, and journalist, founder of
investigative journalism.
 He is most famous for his Open Letter from a
Writer to the Military Junta which he wrote the day
before his murder, protesting that their economic
policies were having an even greater effect on
ordinary Argentines than their human rights
abuses.
 Four years later he was killed during a shoot-out
with a special military group that set an ambush
for him. His body and some of his writings were
never seen again.

Difference and Similarities to Rizal:
 They both contest wrong doings by writing.
 They ought for peace for their land and justice for
its people.
 Walsh was ambushed, while Rizal was executed,
both because of what they have written.

27. Nicaragua
Augusto Cesar Sandino

28. Nicaragua
 He was an early 20th century fomenter and
practitioner of Latin American revolutionary idealism
against American cultural and economic domination.
 Sandino strived to advance the rights and freedoms of
his fellow Nicaraguans that he believed were
subservient to the interests of rich American industrial
and agricultural interests.
 Sandino became a hero to many leftists in Nicaragua
and much of Latin America as a Robin Hood figure
who opposed domination from wealthy elites and
foreigners, such as the United States.

Difference to Rizal:
 Sandino focuses on cultural and economic
domination in their land, while Rizal seeks
fairness and equality among Filipinos and
Spaniards.
 Americans were interested on Nicaragua’s
industry and agriculture, while Spaniards interest
was to colonize the Philippines.
 He was an illegitimate son of a wealthy land
owner, while Rizal belongs to a closed-tie family.

Similarities to Rizal:
 They both want to travel.
 They strive to fight for their country’s rights.

31. Bhutan
Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal

32. Bhutan
 He was a Tibetan Buddhist lama and the unifier
of Bhutan as a nation state.
 In addition to unifying the various warring
fiefdoms for the first time in the 1630s, he also
sought to create a distinctly Bhutanese cultural
identity, separate from the Tibetan culture from
which it was derived.
 Ngawang Namgyal was the main Drukpa
hereditary lineage–holder, and legitimate throne-
holder at Ralung monastery, the traditional seat of
the Drukpa Lineage.

 He established the dual system of shared power
between secular and Buddhist leadership that
continues as a tradition to the present.
 Ngawang Namgyal also established the
distinctive dual system of government under
the Tsa Yig Legal Code by which control of the
country was shared between a spiritual leader.

Similarities to Rizal:
 They both want to have distinction of their races,
Namgyal (Bhutanese culture to Tibetans), Rizal
(Filipino equality to Spaniards).

Alvaro Cunhal

36. Portugal
 Charismatic and imposing figure, even in his later
years, with white hair, jet-black eyebrows and
intense black eyes.
 Led Portugal's Communist Party for a half-century
and became a national hero after the overthrow
of the country's dictatorship.
 He was a strong candidate for prime minister in
1975. With support from the Soviet Union, his
party won 20 percent in a national ballot. He
wanted Portugal to pull out of NATO and become
an ally of Moscow.

Difference to Rizal:
 After years of keeping his private life secret, Mr.
Cunhal confirmed he had a daughter, Ana
Maria, from an extramarital relationship with a
fellow party member while living underground
before the coup.

Similarities to Rizal:
 Mr. Cunhal spent nearly 35 years underground or
in jail for his role in building the Communists into
the only well-organized opposition to the
dictatorship of Antonio Salazar and then Marcelo
Caetano, which ended in a bloodless 1974 army
coup known as the Revolution of Carnations.

39. Dr. Jose P. Rizal
Even though they are all the national heroes of their countries, still they are all
different. We, as Filipinos, must relive the memories of our own Dr. Jose P.
Rizal. His contributions will never be forgotten.
