11. The Battle of Britain: a turning point? 1 Hitler’s idea was that German bombers would attack British airfields and destroy all the RAF’s aircraft. In fact, the Spitfire and the Messerschmitt were more evenly matched than the Germans thought. Many British pilots were reservists and part-timers. They had not received training like their German counterparts.
