Estrogen occurs naturally in both women and men. The word Estrogen is derived from the Greek word oistros (meaning "gadfly" but figuratively conveying sexual desire). Estrogen is a steroid hormone. Your sex drive is dependent on your androgen levels (which only exist in the presence of estrogen). All vertebrae, as well as some insects, synthesize estrogen. Estrogen enhances skin, blood circulation and blood vessel repair. Estrogen is produced by the ovaries in females. Peak estrogen levels occur just before ovulation. The liver, breasts and adrenal glands also produce small amounts of estrogen. These secondary sources of estrogen are essential in postmenopausal women. Estrogen increases bone strength. Women's Health Initiative (WHI) conducted a study that proved synthetic estrogen supplements were associated with an increased risk of blood clotting. *If taking a form of estrogen, always make sure it's a bioidentical version of your naturally produced estrogen hormone. Estrogen plays a significant role in woman's mental health. Estrogen has recently been used to treat bulimia nervosa patients after discovering that the disease may be linked to a hormone imbalance in the brain. Fat produces estrogen. this means that overweight people have higher-than-average estrogen levels, which causes imbalanced hormone symptoms. 80% of breast cancers need estrogen to grow. These cancers are known as hormone-sensitive or hormone-receptor-positive. A treatment for these types of cancers is the suppression of estrogen development. Recent studies have shown that common table mushrooms have anti-aromatase properties (a possible anti-estrogen effect). Scientists have begun to research whether or not table mushrooms can prevent breast cancer. Estrogen is occasionally used as treatment for men with prostate cancers. Estrogen promotes the development of female sexual characteristics (breasts, endometiral wall thickening, menstrual cycle, etc.). Estrogen is essential in men for the maturation of sperm and may be necessary for a healthy sex drive. Estrogen helps to accelerate metabolism. Estrogen has been used to help treat traumatic liver injuries. In the past, estrogen was used to prevent further growth in tall females. The 4 natural estrogens produced in women are: estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), estriol (E3) and estetrol (E4). Estradiol is the predominant estrogen in the body throughout a woman's reproductive years. Estrone is the predominant estrogen during menopause. Estriol is the predominant estrogen during pregnancy, trumping the potency of its sister estrogen, estetrol. Estetrol is only produced during pregnancy. Despite estriol being the most bountiful of the three estrogens, it's the weakest. Estradiol is the strongest estrogen (80x more potent than estriol).

Testosterone is the principal male sex hormone, and it also plays an essential role in women’s overall health and wellness. http://www.vitalitmed.com/hormones/testosterone This naturally occuring steroid hormone is found in mammals, reptiles, birds and other vertebrates. Home to the ‘Androgen Group’*, testosterone contributes to the growth of male sex organs and the development of sex characteristics. *Androgens were first discovered in 1936 and are the precursor of all estrogens. Testosterone is the most well-known androgen hormone. However, Dihydrotestosterone (DHT and androstenedione are less known, but of equal importance in male development). Testosterone’s Role In Development Testosterone is essential in pre-birth development, puberty and continues to play a critical role in your overall health and welness throughout your entire life. Let’s start at the beginning. How Testosterone Affected You Before You Were Born While your XX Chromosomes (if you’re female) or XY Chromosomes (if you’re male) formed in the womb, they determined your chromosomal sex. Your chromosomal sex determines gonadal sex, which is the sex that will be apparent as your sex organs develop and mature. Men: The presence of your Y chromosome induced the formation of your testicles. Two hormones most important to this process are testosterone and anti-Mullerian hormone (a hormone that suppresses the growth of female sex organs). Both of these essential hormones were produced by your testes. Masculinization results from the ability of testosterone to induce male genitals and secondary male sex characteristics. Women: The absence of your Y chromosome allowed you to follow your female developmental pathway. Interestingly, from a genetic standpoint, femaleness is the default setting, because no specific hormones are required for the formation of female genitalalia. Your determined sex organs will secreted essential hormones during your early childhood development. Specific Prenatal Androgen Effects At Two Developmental Stages: 1. Gestation (between 4-6 weeks): Genital Virilization: Androgens; Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and testosterone determined midline fusion, phallic urethra, scrotal layers and vaginal rugation. Prostate and vesicular gland development A surge in testosterone causes the male genitalia to develop and causes specific areas of the male brain to develop. An absence of testosterone causes the fetus to remain female (the default sex). 2. Second Trimester (Weeks 13-19): Sexual Differentiation Of The Brain: This stage determines the feminization or masculinization of the baby. Interestingly, the mother’s testosterone levels during the second trimester are a better predictor of her daughter’s behavior than the daughter’s own adult testosterone levels. System architecture is the descriptive representation of the system’s component functions and the communication flows between those components. My definition immediately raises some important questions. • What are “components”? • Which functions are relevant? • What is a communication flow? Overview and Heritage Currently, I live in San Leandro, California. I was born and raised on the island of Guam. Guam ancestors are called “Chamorro.” Guam is an unincorporated territory of the United States. Individuals who are born on Guam are US citizens. My parents were also born and raised on Guam. My father was born in 1934, who passed away at the age of 65. My mother, born in 1939, and is alive and well. I relocated to California in the year of 1993 when I finished my midwifery education. I received an Associate Degree in Nursing in 1986, went back home to work as a nurse. Through the years, I was promoted as a Nurse Manager, then a Supervisor at the Guam Memorial Hospital Authority. I went to the University of San Francisco for my Midwifery Certificate in 1994. My current position is a Chief Nurse-Midwife for the Greater Southern Alameda Area (GSAA) of Kaiser Permanente in Northern California. On our island, we lacked fresh fruits and vegetables, which makes eating healthy a challenge. This may be the contributing factor of high diabetes and hypertension rate on Guam. We mainly eat meat, rice and lots of diaries. My income level is $200,000, and I have a husband who is currently working and is contributing in addition to my salary. I can afford the essential needs to stay healthy. My job provides for health and dental insurance, which is a crucial in my current stage of life. My current position can be stressful, but I find ways to try and avoid stress. My physical health is good, but I feel that it’s my mental health that I need to work on more to sustain myself in my current position. My husband and I live alone. We have four grown children and six grandchildren. All but one lives out of state, my youngest, who is twenty-eight years old lives twenty miles away from me. Communication My full name is Doris Therese Crisostomo Untalan. The legal name that I use is Doris T. Untalan. My primary language is English and native language is called “Chamorro.” This is a blend of Spanish and Filipino words. I do speak Chamorro, but limited. When I was growing up, my mother did not speak our language to us.
