Birth of Indian Cinema
Indian Cinema was born on 3rd
May,1913.
Since 1913, Indian Cinema, popularly known as
Bollywood has made a long journey from simple
silent movies to sound films, then colored films to
technically advanced movies of the present day.
Acclaimed as one of the biggest film industries of
the world, Bollywood produces over 1000 films
every year.

20th
Century Industry
The film industry evolved with first
silent feature film of India, Raja
Harishchandra (1913), which was
made by Dadasaheb Phalke.
The movie initially did not have much
response from the public but later on
gained publicity.

Evolution of the Cinema
* It was by the 1930's that the industry started producing
more than 200 films every year.
* Alam Ara (1931) was the first Indian sound film, produced
by Ardeshir Irani.
* By late 1950s, the first color films were released. During
this period, the films were defined by sumptuous romantic
musicals and melodramas.
* Late 1960s and early 1970s gave rise to romantic movies,
action films and violent films.
* In the mid 1990s, the cinema quality increased to a great
extent and the box-office was stroked by family-centric
romantic musicals once again.

popularity to the Bollywood, so much that its films appeal
the audiences of all segments.
* Today Indian Cinema, especially Hindi cinema is not only
popular in India but also in parts of Middle East, Pakistan,
UK and virtually every other place where Indians live.
* Even films like Lagaan, Salaam Bombay and Monsoon
Wedding made to the international market sit ups.

Conclusion
By now, we all have known one thing that the
Cinema has seen numerous changes during its
evolution. Where first we had silent, black and white
movies, are now replaced by movies filled with
dialogues, songs, action sequences and 3D effects.
Growth of this industry is a never ending
process. It will continue to evolve and entertain us
like before.
Thanks and Regards
