This presentation reports on the author’s low cost, innovative approach to an introductory Information Systems [IS] course, promoting twenty-first-century skills. By implementing several best instructional practices and through innovative use of technology to create community, the faculty member created a learning environment that students received with enthusiasm, and which helped them achieve at a higher level. The instructional practices included relevant AAC&U high-impact practices, ConnectedLearning.tv framework, and flipped classroom. This author describes the details of the approach and the course outcomes, followed by a discussion.

The Open Learning Design Studio MOOC: Learning Design for a 21st Century Curriculum (http://www.olds.ac.uk/) was the first ever project-based MOOC on learning design. This ambitious MOOC ran for 9 weeks in early 2013. Its structure was based on a design inquiry model, where designers identify a (learning/curriculum) design challenge, explore it to gain an understanding of its context and driving forces, generate possible solutions, implement a solution and reflect on the process as a whole and its outputs. The MOOC exposed participants to a wide range of voices, approaches, representations, and tools for learning design. It incorporated a host of innovations in pedagogy and technology including Badges (http://www.olds.ac.uk/badges). Over 2000 people registered, over 1000 participated in the first week, and several hundred were active thoughout. OLDS MOOC adopted a radically open approach - registration was optional, and all the MOOC resources were made available as OERs. This session will reflect on what went well, what not so much, and what lessons can be learned.

Speakers: Ninna Makrinov, skills programme coordinator, University of Warwick Susan Vollmer, learning and digital content officer, University of Warwick This session will look at the results of a pilot online critical thinking Moodle course offered to students at the University of Warwick. The university adopted an innovative approach to online learning which included the use of H5P interactive presentations and semi-synchronous delivery. Students interacted with the course for around 20 minutes each day over five days and received daily feedback on their reflections. This session will reflect upon student and practitioner feedback and outline further developments.

The two major complaints we hear from students about group projects are (1) the problems of getting members together for meetings and (2) the inequity of effort among group members. Virtual groups, easily established using Blackboard, can address both of these legitimate concerns. Additionally, online groups can enrich class discussion and provide a virtual environment for sharing documents. This on-line workshop will walk participants through the process of setting up Blackboard groups and will discuss some of the principles that make group projects successful. It\'s been a bug-bear of mine for many years that the average marketing skill set has not moved on very much from the 1960\'s model of 4 \'P\'s (Product, Price, Promotion, Place). Or that marketing is still largely synonomous with advertising - and spam advertising at that. This is a presentation I did to a marketing forum out in Singapore, where I\'ve tried to outline the new capabilities of the marketer of the 21st century. I also postulate the (controversial) perspective that a chunk of this new capability - especially around data and decisioning - might be better out sourced, leaving the internal marketing skills to be concentrated on strategy and proposition. See what you think. [Sorry you won\'t have my spoken narrative just yet but the slides are reasonably self explanatory]

Tanya Joosten
Through an examination of the ten basic questions of blended course redesign, participants will reconceive their traditional face-to-face courses for blended teaching and learning. Participants will follow backwards design principles to design a course module, and will learn techniques for integrating face-to-face and online work, and apply them to their own courses. For experienced teachers, this workshop provides a new approach to design a course in order to overcome "course and a half" syndrome and better manage your workload. Friday, November 14th, 8:30am-11:30am

Online learning is one of the more easily accessed professional learning for teachers. With the requirement for all teachers to maintain Proficient Standard by participating in and logging at least 100 hours of professional learning activities over a 5-year period, a range of options will be needed. This webinar will take participants through the steps in developing an eLearning course for teachers using a range of digital tools and an understanding of the requirements of the Proficient Teacher level. This webinar will help you: Design a course specific to Proficient Teacher level standard Build an eLearning course Build awareness of some digital tools and the core requirements of a successful adult learning course Embed digital tools in the course

The microservices honeymoon is over. When starting a new project or revamping a legacy monolith, teams started looking for alternatives to microservices. The Modular Monolith, or 'Modulith', is an architecture that reaps the benefits of (vertical) functional decoupling without the high costs associated with separate deployments. This talk will delve into the advantages and challenges of this progressive architecture, beginning with exploring the concept of a 'module', its internal structure, public API, and inter-module communication patterns. Supported by spring-modulith, the talk provides practical guidance on addressing the main challenges of a Modultith Architecture: finding and guarding module boundaries, data decoupling, and integration module-testing. You should not miss this talk if you are a software architect or tech lead seeking practical, scalable solutions. About the author With two decades of experience, Victor is a Java Champion working as a trainer for top companies in Europe. Five thousands developers in 120 companies attended his workshops, so he gets to debate every week the challenges that various projects struggle with. In return, Victor summarizes key points from these workshops in conference talks and online meetups for the European Software Crafters, the world’s largest developer community around architecture, refactoring, and testing. Discover how Victor can help you on victorrentea.ro : company training catalog, consultancy and YouTube playlists.

When you’re building (micro)services, you have lots of framework options. Spring Boot is no doubt a popular choice. But there’s more! Take Quarkus, a framework that’s considered the rising star for Kubernetes-native Java. It always depends on what's best for your situation, but how to choose the best solution if you're comparing 2 frameworks? Both Spring Boot and Quarkus have their positives and negatives. Let us compare the two by live coding a couple of common use cases in Spring Boot and Quarkus. After this talk, you’ll be ready to get started with Quarkus yourself, and know when to select Quarkus or Spring Boot.

The action of the next cyber saga takes place in the mystical lands of the Asia-Pacific region, where the main characters began their digital activities in the middle of 2021 and qualitatively strengthened it in 2022. Corporate espionage, document theft, audio recordings, and data leaks from messaging platforms were all a matter of one day for Dark Pink. Their geographical focus may have started in the Asia-Pacific region, but their ambitions knew no bounds, targeting a European government ministry in a bold move to expand their portfolio. Their victim profile was as diverse as a UN meeting, targeting military organizations, government agencies, and even a religious organization. Because discrimination is not a fashionable agenda. In the world of cybercrime, they serve as a reminder that sometimes the most serious threats come in the most unassuming packages with a pink bow.
