2. PROFILE
Hi, I’m Pratyush.
I’m an UX enthusiast, UX/UI/Usability researcher with Masters in
Human Centred Interactive Technologies. I am a passionate UI creator,
curator and admirer – with an eye for details. I love to spend my time
creating simple yet usable interfaces, strictly following design guidelines
and performing UX research.
I’m currently based in Oulu, Finland where I work as a HCI/UX
researcher collaborating with the industry.
I have worked alongside designers, developers, architects and clients –
(always) advocating for the users; conducted extensive user research and
usability tests; and have presented optimized solutions to clients. With over
three years of industry experience, and academic background in Human
Computer Interaction, I have strategically worked across all the stages of
User Centred Designing process (requirements elicitation, scenario based
design, wireframes, prototyping, and expert/user evaluation). This portfolio
covers some of my recent works.
As a consultant I have worked with over 5 major clients and have
gained hands-on experience at designing and conducting usability tests. I
have designed wireframes of websites, mobile apps, and multi-touch table
applications.
I’m also an avid reader and topics of interest generally include science
and technology, psychology and human computer interaction. I’m also a
gadget enthusiast and watch every technical review of smartphones, tablets
and digital cameras. I love photography, cooking, travelling, and origami.

3. USER STUDY
Think Aloud Protocol using Morae – Comparative Usability study of 3
British Museum Websites - Victoria and Albert Museum, British
Museum, and National History Museum.
I designed 3 relevant tasks for users using Hierarchical Task
Analysis.

Directions to a room using Maps
and interviewed 5 Users for retrospective and concurrent Think
Aloud Protocol using Morae.
Contextual Inquiry – Adding reminder/tasks to calendar
As an observer I collected 10 Q/As and 7 body language cues,
e.g. “Frowns. He has to check the browser frequently to see if any
reply from his friend.”
Finally I devised

Semi-structured Interview
I’ve conducted over 30 structured and semi-structured user
interviews.

6. USER CENTRED
DESIGN
Survey Questionnaires / Research
I’ve performed extensive research (in academic and industry) to
design goal focused questionnaires that are easy to comprehend.
I’ve deployed and analyzed surveys to extract hidden insights and
answer difficult questions relating to functionality and design.
Persona
Based on the target user profile I’ve created presentable persona
Scenario Based Design
I’ve used the persona to design everyday usage scenarios and
created Problem and Activity scenario with Claims analysis.
Prototyping
Based on the Claims analysis, I’ve created low and high fidelity
paper prototypes, white-board drawings, PSDs, clickable and
annotated wireframes.
Expert Evaluation
I’ve performed over 5 Heuristic evaluation, Wizard of Oz
evaluation, and cognitive walkthrough.
Task based User evaluation
I’ve created user tasks using Hierarchical Task Analysis
Redesign
After performing usability studies I’ve redesigned interfaces and
provided recommendations.

“Very good discussion of the concerns of FB users highlighted by this analysis. Excellent table of proposed
solutions. Very professional presentation - good citations, referencing, use of tables and figures”- Helen Petrie
Phd AFBPsS CPsychol FRSA
“The personas are very good, with aspects justified with evidence from the elicitation activities. The system is
fairly complex, but it is very clearly described. The metaphors and concepts incorporated in the system have been
presented extremely well.” - Christopher Power, PhD
“This was one of our favorite presentations.” - Christopher Power, PhD
“HTAs look very good. I like your use of a "Notes" column.” – Helen Petrie Phd AFBPsS CPsychol FRSA
“Good range of tasks chosen. Good personas and scenarios. Method seems to cover everything clearly. …
interesting to summarize the presentation of the material in the tables.” – Helen Petrie Phd AFBPsS CPsychol

“As the paper says, affordance is a much misunderstood term and the author has made a good job of attempting
to clarify it in this paper. The paper provides a good review of literature on affordance, emotion and complexity.”
– Dr. Alistair D N Edwards
"A good and well thought out experiment” – Dr. Paul Cairns
“This is a well-written paper that doesn’t oversell its results. To my knowledge, it is original. I appreciated the
clear description of the experiment, which will allow other researchers to further develop this line of inquiry.
Whilst the results are preliminary, further exploration in this area is worthwhile.” – ACM CHI 2014 reviews

12. PROJECT: TRADING
YARDS
Trading Yards was an User centred design approach to building a
prototype for a smartphone based collaborative game that encourages
people to walk. Design rationale included requirements elicitation,
creating personas, scenario based design, prototyping, expert and user
evaluation, and one iteration of re-design. The design document was
used to keep track of all the activities, design decisions, usability tests
and their results.
Performed online survey (116 participants), one-to-one interviews (12
users)
Detailed persona created to represent the target age group.

13. PROJECT: TRADING
YARDS c o n td.
Whiteboard wireframes and flow diagrams were created to show the
user scenarios.
Paper based app prototypes was created to show the states of the
application.
Collaborative heuristic evaluations and user testing was done.
Based on the results of the evaluation a redesign phase was undertaken.
Some of the states were discarded due to complexity
Common themes were added for the cards
Maps facility was introduced
Conclusions
Finding the right motivation to keep going requires an attitudinal
change.
'Trading Yards', was an attempt to initiate a change in behavior by
introducing a real life metaphor - trading cards by walking.
Concept of gamification lured the user towards a secondary goal of
collecting cards.
The intuitive simplicity of the game made adherence easy.
User Feedback
Capturing photos while walking & sharing and an in-built music app
Tailoring messages to the needs of the user can motivate further.
“The project supports the use of technology to elicit a change in attitude towards a
healthy life. I hope that interventions such as ‘Trading Yards’ will be successful in
motivating people to walk regularly and help them lead a healthy life.” – a test
participant from in-the-wild user testing study.
