Interface Design

    TV Remote
Project Brief

• Design a TV Remote Interface with understanding
the user needs for the present; inspire from the past
  and desire for the future.

• Taking a wider user group and considering their
  experiences.

• Analysis and application of the aspects of interface
  design of controls and displays.
Methodology

• The main focus was on the interface of the remote.

• The study was done on the users to get a feedback on how
they interact with their television and to know their
  preferences and problem areas.
Observations
• User don’t remember where the channel number is at which the
  channel is tuned.

• Which channel was the user watching a short while ago.

• Some people forget the time of the program.

• User tend to keep the remote at certain places and forgets rather
  finds it difficult to locate.

• For every operation users have to see at remote .The neck
  movement is prominent.

• Some buttons are rarely used.

• Many people don’t want to remember the channel number
  because flipping is fun.
Observations

• They also want to know what is going in parallel.

• Most people use auto tuning so whichever sequence comes people
  don’t change or organize.

• Activation feedback.

• The placement of menu.

• Some symbols are hard to understand.

• The time for which a user sits in front of TV sometimes determines the
  functions explored of the remote.
Observation and user feed Back – about
              Interface

• Product can show their feasibility depends on mainly these
  points

• Look and feel

• Functionality

• Technical complexity
• How is the Task Performed
• About Ergonomics
• Anthropometric Data
Task Performed

• Power On: can be performed manually from the main body and
  button on remote.

• Channel Change: By scroll down on the main body and on remote;
can be directly go to direct channel number or through favorites
feedback is must may be visually or through sound.

• Volume : Can be Down through main body and from remote by
scrolling and visual feedback is must.

• Mute : One touch button on the remote and feed back visually is
  must.
Task Performed

• Scan : One touch button on the remote and feed back
  visually or sound.

• Favorite : One touch on remote directly and go to favorites.

• Undo : Like back button in computer click and go back few
  numbers of times.

• Audio Setting : One touch on remote and scroll to change
  theme.

• Sleep : one touch on remote and change the time through
scroll button and remainder is must before switch off.
Ergonomics
Cognitive
Man-Machine System Design

• Human reliability has important implications not only in the way how
  man-machine interfaces are designed.

• HE and training

• Allocation of functions between man and machine
   – Man Vs Machine
   – Limitation of man-machine comparison
   – Trade-off hints for man-machine function allocation

• Task Analysis
Ergonomics

• Some of the points covered ergonomically for the form factor.

• Maximum and minimum length of the various grips.

• Relative distance of the interface elements such as the
  thickness.
Anthropometric Data
Wrist Position
This is the position after 1 or 2 minutes
                                           with the remote.
This position is relaxed for the wrist.

Wrist Position (Initial)
This is the initial position when viewer
Takes the remote and watches.
Functions

User have their own preferences and depend on his needs he
use functions in the remote control. As per our observation
there are some function which are used very often and some
used very rarely, than we categorize into two sectors

                           Primary function
• Primary functions are those functions which are used daily.
• Channel Change
• Volume
• Mute
• Scan
• Favorites
• Numbers
• Sleep
Functions

                      Secondary functions

• Tuning facility
• Sound quality adjustment
• Code/Decode
• Child lock
• Picture quality
Icons
Concept 2

                                                                    The Baton

This concept also implements the three surfaces
with a form emulating the experience of baton.

The form also has a touch screen. It also displays information.

The form helps in giving a nice grip.

The idea of is to try and make the experience a family experience
Just like relay where there group of athletes.
Take it!
• Thanks
