There were allegations of stalking prior to the
shooting spree at Virginia Tech by gunman Seung
Hui Cho, who sent another student disturbing online
messages and phoning her repeatedly. Campus
environments are conducive to stalking because
people's movements, habits and whereabouts can be
                                              studied easily.
                              Real Students,
                              Real Consequences,
                              Real World Problems…
UCLA student Alexandra Wallace has gained national
notoriety for posting a YouTube video which shows her in
a 3-minute long banter against Asian students. This video
has reached astronomical numbers. Despite Wallace’s
moral character now being in question, the potential for
so many students to feel discriminated or hated against is
a highly likely and unfortunate circumstance.
Professional Consequences of Misuse
Social Media can….
                     • Misrepresent who you are and obscure the context of your
                       words or actions
                     • Be a distraction resulting in poor time management and overall
                       production
                     • Make it difficult to distinguish between personal and
                       professional lives
                     • Contribute to social isolation
                     • Impose upon your privacy & legally incriminate you
                     • Be a weapon for identity theft
                     • Attract individual’s with malicious behavior, jeopardizing your
                       safety
                     • Negatively effect one’s emotional well-being, mental wellness,
                       and sense of identity

REMEMBER! What happens on YouTube stays on YouTube…
Who’s looking?
• Prospective Students!
• Your peers!
• College Administrators
• Potential Landlord
• Future Employers
    – About a third of employers report using search
engines or social networking sites to screen
      candidates for jobs.
• Police • Younger Siblings
            • Current Employers…
• Parents • Anyone and Everyone!
               • Your profiles are on the World Wide Web

  • Community announcements
  • Emergency notifications
  • Weather notifications

Don’t Get Left In The Dust!
• If you consider the potential dangers of Social Media…

• If you take the proper precautions while using Social Media…

• If you use Social Media to better enhance your knowledge,
  educational experience, and communication…

        Is This Hotel
            Pager-
          Friendly?

                        The times are changing,
                                don’t get left behind,
you can change with the times!
Ask Yourself Where You Stand…
• Faculty & Staff should have a presence in Social Media?
• MC administrators should be “policing” student profiles?
• I need to be more careful about pictures of me that end
  up online?
• I should probably make some changes to my online
  profiles?
• I am concerned about creating a positive image of
  myself?
• People need to stop caring about what I do in my own
time! It’s none of their business!
How prepared
are you for the
 Revolution?
