Involving caregivers and teachers in the therapeutic process is a major component of successful therapy. However, social, familial, personal, and environmental factors can make caregiver and teacher involvement difficult. In this course we identify the benefits of family involvement and will then provide five research-based strategies for how to improve our interactions with families and teachers. We refer to the strategies as SMILE (Sign, Model, Imitate, Label, and Expand). These strategies have been found to improve communication skills in young children. We will define the SMILE strategies, provide the rationale behind them, and demonstrate how to implement the strategies when serving an early-childhood population.

Family engagement is an effective strategy to increase student achievement and improve schools. However, many schools struggle with how to engage all families in meaningful ways. The National PTA Standards for Family-School Partnerships provide a framework for structuring and assessing family engagement. This session will explore how to use the National Standards strategies centered around arts education programs and activities to fully engage all families in their children’s education.

The trinity of family and community engagement is relational trust, promising practices, and compliance. It's time to rethink family and community engagement - moving from management and presentation of information to relationships and capacity building, as well as, helping families, communities, staff, and students learn together.

Parental involvement in their children's education has been proven by research to improve the children's confidence, interest and performance at school. A qualitative case study to evaluate the influence of parental involvement was conducted. The study sample was purposively sampled and consisted of 20 school heads, 20 teachers and 20 pupils. The researcher was the main research instrument during data gathering. She assumed the role of the interviewer and an observer. Data were analysed using thematic content analysis. The findings showed that, parents who had children enrolled in rural and public urban schools were less committed to their children's learning. Further, they were not worried much about their children’s school environment. They consulted less with the teachers and did not supervise their children’s home work. Parents whose children were in private schools had better communication and interaction with their children’s teachers. There were various models that were used to improve parent-teacher relationship for the betterment of the children's learning needs. The study recommended -devolvement of engagement strategies, improved communication channels, supervised parental involvement in school activities andmonitoring and evaluation measures to assess performance, progress, outcome and impact of engagement strategies.

ASR presented findings from a school readiness assessment conducted with entering kindergartners and their family in San Francisco, Alameda, and Contra Costa, and our partners at First 5 agencies in these counties shared how they use data to inform policy and practice in their communities. The school readiness assessment found that just over 4 in 10 children in the region were fully ready for school, meaning they were proficient or nearly proficient in their social-emotional and academic readiness skills. Although some of the predictors of readiness were demographic (e.g., age, gender, and race/ethnicity), many of the factors could be changed with intervention.

It is very important to call if you cannot make it to your appointment. The clinic and the parent decide on a rescheduled appointment time. The appointment will now take place a different day and the clinic will be able refill that time slot with another patient. Some clinics will not make any more appointments with people who have not shown up to scheduled appointments in the past. By calling and telling the clinic you cannot come will allow you to still make appointments at that clinic.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
