We’re going to talk about ways to improve & expand our library’s digital presence. How to more effectively connect with online patrons We need to provide our patrons with a better experience on our web sites And helping them accomplish what they want to do. And we need to get much better at taking the library out of the ‘walls’ of our web sites. A “digital presence” isn’t just about our library web site or ‘digital branch’ We can reach the users we don’t see in our library.
Why be online, why have a great website, why have a digital presence? GET THEIR ANSWERS!
By being on line we can provide our existing and potential customers with information they need & want WHERE they want it WHEN they want it And we can do that by reaching them in the places they already are gathering. Whether in the physical world or….
Or online. And we want them to be so delighted that they want to have their connections connect with us too. And help them accomplish what they want to do – what’s in it for THEM !
Most important: It lets us listen to what our community has to say, so we can respond and react and give them the services they want and need. Our current customers are out biggest asset. They’ll share your brand with their friends
During the session today we’ll share lots and lots of ideas!. Some will be thing you’re already doing and hopefully there will be many new ideas too. I’m not suggesting you do everything!

So how do we fit in and what are we going to do ?
Who’s your audience? Who are you trying to reach? What do you have to offer them?
Consider which tools might help Look around your community What services are they using?
If you start using a service, don’t forget to be present! Answer questions interact, see what happens.
Don’t be afraid to change directions, take chances, try something new. Good to test out new services personally first, then decide if you want to have a library presences
Because there’s nothing worse than a bunch of abandoned sites Blogs that haven’t been updated, wikis with out of date info. Projects started and abandonded. Get rid of these or make it clear they’re no longer being updated.
Is it useful? Professional, attractive, dynamic? Few people will actually start their research with your site. so what is your website for? Hopefully they’ll get to your site somehow. Use your resources directly or indirectly. What will they get by coming to your site?
http://www.americanbeautybordercollies.com/
http://www.hpl.lib.tx.us/ Easy to navigate? Can they find what they need without thinking about how the site is organized? Menus and navigation that make sense to your customers? How about an option to search the catalog, your web site AND the web? Do you have the information they want? What DO they want? Ask them! (9/2011)
But you don’t need a ton of money and mad programming skills to have an effective site. This one was done with free open source software – Wordpress What’s key is finding out what your customers want and giving it to them!

Alachua – Drupal, another open source tool. More complex, more possibilities. Sliders are a great way to add changing content. http://www.aclib.us/

Do you have mobile users?? FIND OUT!
Data! You need to know where people are coming from What resources they’re using Are they staying around? How did they get to your site, - most people don’t start at your home page. What pages did they visit. Data for your other services too Databases Audio books Etc. catalog
Where Google webmaster tools help you make sure your page is being indexed by google, Google Analytics focuses on user data. – here we see mobile data.
What search engines are being used to find you What keywords Google analytics keyword to wordle: http://goo.gl/bcz38
First challenge – can they find you when they need you? Even If they don’t know they need you? Will they find your services? In house and digital? Where do users go for information? The library? Noooo…
Probably very likely to find your library if you search by your town or organization name and “library” New formatting for listing pages within the main site. Notice other results from wikipedia, twitter, and PLACE pages
Claim your place pages and add lots of useful info to help get found - This one needs info about free wifi service.
If you own the page, no one else can edit it.
We know that most users don’t start their information seeking by going to the libray web site. Most of us probably don’t Obviously – make sure you’re library is coming up when people actually search for you. And make sure variations find you too. Optimize your web pages Use language that users understand Create pages for each service, each branch

Good descriptions help users decide whether to go to your page or not. Write text that uses everyday words to describe services
Create a page for each service and use understandable words.
Same idea, each branch with it’s own page.
A search on free wifi usually includes a location Does your library come up somewhere in the top 10? Usually wifi directories come up first. Are you listed?
Does your link in the directory take user to a page about your wifi service? DON”T MAKE ME HUNT THROUGH YOUR WEBSITE FOR DETAILS! Make a separate page on your web site for each of your services. Title the page with the name of the service Use the names of the service in the page This helps search engines find you. And gives you a useful page to link to.
Does your library’s google page come up to the top in searches like this?
What other services? You get the point!
What other services? Book club search – is your library there? What other directories come up? Consider listing yourself in these too. This one charges.
ebooks – Tough one – who thinks to put in a town or location when you’re looking for online services?? Maybe library systems should try taking some google ads that come up for some of these keywords? Not sure.
Tough one – who thinks to put in a town or location when you’re looking for online services?? Maybe library systems should try taking some google ads that come up for some of these keywords? Improved Local Search would help. Make sure your web pages with these kinds of services have your town name, state zipcode. Use phrases that people might use to search “free audio books” etc.
Tourists and newcomers will look for info about your town this way.
Links to a wikipedia article for your town? Write a paragraph on the town site OR better, write your own page and link it to the town page. Write a wikipedia article Who else in your community is in Wikipedia? TALK TO THEM! Get them to link to you on their web sites. AND Community Links
Librarything events – good target audience Add your library info Add events
Ugly, ugly site, but it works! People looking for booksales go here. Comes up tops in search results. GENERAL TIP – search for the type of event or service you want to promote, what directories are tops? Get listed there.
But where’s the FREE WIFI listing?? Claim your business!
Can they personalize their experience? Could be as simple as being able to keep a list of the books they want to check out eventually. Or being able to read and write reviews?

We want to build our digital community, and we want to help them do the things they want to do. We need to design better digital experiences. AND we need to take our services out of our digital sphere. FIRST Once we get them to our digital “space” are they finding what they need, are they engaged, will they come back? Can they do ‘things” and share. - if they want to!

David Lee King -- What can you do with a Facebook Page? http://www.davidleeking.com/2008/10/09/what-can-you-do-with-a-facebook-page/ Set up page on his account – Facebook wants you to associate your pages with a personal account. -- Added local businesses with pages to “this pages’ favorites” section. Gives automatic audience. -- includes basic info about library with links back to resources -- feed of library news with Facebook Simply RSS app -- set up section for fan videos, pictures etc. -- remember to monitor the page. Answer queries, thank people for their feedback, interact. -- make announcements that go out to fans. Don’t go overboard and be annoying, but consistent is good.
