2. Characteristics
 A blockage in the lining of the appendix that results in infection is the
likely cause of appendicitis.
 The bacteria multiply rapidly, causing the appendix to become
inflamed, swollen and filled with pus.
 This blockage leads to increased pressures within the appendix,
decreased blood flow to the tissues of the appendix, & bacterial
growth inside the appendix causing inflammation.
 The combination of inflammation, reduced blood flow to the
appendix and distention of the appendix causes tissue injury and
tissue death.

3. Signs and symptoms
 Abdominal bloating
 Appetite Loss
 Constipation or diarrhoea
 Low-grade fever
 Nausea

 Pain that worsens if you cough, walk or make other physical movements

5. Causes & Complication
 It is caused by obstruction in the appendix.
 Obstruction may be either partial or complete.
 Complete obstruction is cause for emergency surgery.
 The bacteria multiply rapidly, causing the appendix to become
inflamed, swollen and filled with pus. If not treated promptly, the
appendix can rupture.
 Rupture spreads infection throughout abdomen which requires
surgery or it can be life threatening.
 If appendix bursts, it develops a pocket of infection.

6. Diagnosis
A physical exam for appendicitis looks for tenderness in the lower right
quadrant of abdomen.
Urinalysis confirm urinary tract infection or kidney stone.
Pelvic exams to see that women don’t have reproductive problems.
They can also rule out other pelvic infections.
Pregnancy tests can find out a suspected ectopic pregnancy.
Abdominal imaging to confirm if there is an abscess or other
complications. This may be done with an X-ray, ultrasound, or CT scan.
Chest x-ray to find out right lower-lobe pneumonia. This sometimes has
symptoms like appendicitis.
