AUTOMATION != SCHEDULING
SCHEDULING
• Scheduling is setting a pre
written post/msg to go out at a
  specific time.

RT @pjmckeown Social Media scheduling, is not automation! #smx #22B
AUTOMATION
• Automation is
  triggering something
  based on something
  else.
WHY AUTOMATE
• Social Signals are GREAT for SEO

• Can automate to a TON of social sharing sites quickly

• Reach multiple audiences in multiple places quickly and easily

• Can set up “friends/coworkers” to automate on your behalf
  too!

• There is no replacement for AUTHENTIC social signals

RT @pjmckeown Quick and Easy is NOT a replacement for Genuine and Authentic #smx #22B
WHEN TO AUTOMATE
• Automate when you own the source or know the
  owner.

• Automate when you need to get a message out to
  many places with little effort.

• Automate to channels that are slower and you are
wanting to have “some” presence on. Autopost
messages from one platform to another. (ONLY if
  you will engage when necessary).

RT @pjmckeown If Social Media automation was that easy, everyone would do it! It’s not a
        silver bullet #smx #22B
WHAT TO AUTOMATE
• Automate OWNED blog postings.

• Automate your OWNED messages from one
platform to another. ie: Twitter photo automatically
  also posted to Facebook.

• Make sure the context and posting styles are
appropriate for that channel. (hashtags on Twitter,
  not yet on Facebook)

RT @pjmckeown Don’t join a social platform if you are not able to engage! #smx #22B
WHAT NOT TO AUTOMATE
WHAT NOT TO AUTOMATE
• Never auto respond! Except when…

• Don’t automate anything that could potentially
become controversial. Current news can become a
  social nightmare in seconds!

• Don’t automate items that you do not own. This
WILL come back to bite you!

• Responses should be from real people in real time!

RT @pjmckeown Social Media responses should be from real people, not robots! #smx #22B
WHAT’S THE POINT?
• Scheduling means you reach your audience at the
  right time!

• Control your sources!

• Take responsibility!

• Engagement is the key!

• Automation is NOT set it and forget it!

RT @pjmckeown Social Media Automation is NOT set it and forget it! Engagement is Key!!
         #smx #22B

• Tweriod is a basic and simple yet
  invaluable tool. When are my
followers online, and when do I

  2. A lot of people go on and on about their scheduling features and how great they are that they have tweets scheduled to go out. 1. Most believe that is automation, 2. they probably haven’t done any research as to when the best time of day is to schedule their tweets to go out! So lets start off by stating first of all that automation and scheduling are two different things!
  3. Scheduling is developing a post and setting a specific time for it to launch at, whether that be a blog post, or a twitter message. Scheduling is important as you can engage a broader audience if you post things at the right time.
  4. For instance, posting messages to a Facebook fan page, and then automatically posting that same message to google + or LinkedIn, or when I update my blog with a new post I am able to then have it automatically notify my Twitter followers that there is a new blog post. Or one that I use quite often, when I really like an article that I have read on Google Reader, I star that article. When I do that, I automatically add those articles to my Buffer to go out at specific times, 2 times per day. When I post to my blog, automatically post to twitter, stumbleupon, etc…
  5. So why would you want to automate?
  6. Use this slide to highlight statistics/important numbers or percentages.
  7. So let’s start with a quick statement
  8. Remember, if it was that easy, everyone would do it! Automation is NOT a silver bullet!
  9. So let’s start with a quick statement
  10. Use this slide to highlight statistics/important numbers or percentages.
  11. What not to automate!
  12. Don’t autorespond things like “thanks for the follow”, but if you are not open, or away, or something you may want to autorespond to DM’s to let people who message you know? You can buffer items from respected authors and blogs, but be careful what you automate.
  13. So we talk about all of this and the automation, but what is the point of all of this?
  14. Use this slide to highlight statistics/important numbers or percentages.
  15. So now we get to the fun stuff… The tools.
  16. I could be here for hours just talking about tools, but I have decided to focus on the 5 that I use most. There are a million tools out there and always new ones popping up. But here is a high level that show some of the tools that I use.
  17. Start Slowly, the more channels that are out there “broadcasting” your message, the more channels you need to be paying attention to. Are you prepared for whats to come?
  18. My favorite tool of all!Now if you are on a budget a great way to get some automation taking place is to utilize IFTTT.comWhen I first pitched to speak at SMX, this was going to be one of my primary focuses, but due to Twitter limiting what Devs can do, ifttt.com is not “quite” as useful as it wasGet friends/coworkers to automate your posts: (especially if they don’t know better)
