Pharmaceutical companies have always relied on data to support innovation and drive the business. This concept has remained unchanged, despite the fact that today we get it at the speed of light, in an overwhelming volume, and in a global and mostly unstructured way. In order to continue to derive knowledge and insights from that data to support drug discovery and business strategies, integrating AI tools into work processes and acquiring the required skills to do so has become crucial. Although the need is clear, how to implement these new tools is not straightforward in an era of restructuring, divesting, outsourcing, and budget crunching. This talk will focus on creative ways to overcome some of these barriers within a “big pharma” setting with a specific example demonstrating the application of these concepts.

Maintaining and extending them often means that the respective manual tasks need to be done on a regular basis in order to prevent the resources from becoming outdated, irrelevant and incomplete. AI has much support to offer for this task. And by wrapping the respective approaches into applications that can be operated by terminologists and domain experts who don't need to be programmers or data scientists themselves, the benefits can be made available to a wide range of users.

With the explosion of interest in both enhanced knowledge management and open science, the past few years have seen considerable discussion about making scientific data “FAIR” — findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. The problem is that most scientific datasets are not FAIR. When left to their own devices, scientists do an absolutely terrible job creating the metadata that describe the experimental datasets that make their way in online repositories. The lack of standardization makes it extremely difficult for other investigators to locate relevant datasets, to re-analyse them, and to integrate those datasets with other data. The Center for Expanded Data Annotation and Retrieval (CEDAR) has the goal of enhancing the authoring of experimental metadata to make online datasets more useful to the scientific community. The CEDAR work bench for metadata management will be presented in this webinar. CEDAR illustrates the importance of semantic technology to driving open science. It also demonstrates a means for simplifying access to scientific data sets and enhancing the reuse of the data to drive new discoveries.

The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media. The presentation also discusses the ethical implications and the need for regulation in AI, highlighting issues such as privacy, bias, and the potential for misuse. These concerns have prompted calls for comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe and equitable use of AI technologies. Artificial intelligence has also played a significant role in healthcare, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it was used in drug discovery, vaccine development, and analyzing the spread of the virus. The capabilities of AI in healthcare are vast, ranging from medical diagnostics to personalized medicine, demonstrating the technology's potential to revolutionize fields beyond just technical or consumer applications. In conclusion, AI continues to be a rapidly evolving field with significant implications for various aspects of society. Bob Stanley is co-founder and CEO at IO Informatics, a data integration company in Berkeley, California. Bob has 15 years experience in Life Science informatics and has served as principal investigator and project manager for many successful projects, including software development for the largest bioinformatics grant awarded to date by the National Institute of Science and Technology.He is joined with Eric Prud’hommeaux of the World Wide Web Consortium. Eric is a team contact for the W3C Semantic Web Health Care and Life Sciences Interest Group and works out of Frank Gehry’s infamous Stata Center at MIT in Cambridge, MA.Pablo Castro is principal architect at Microsoft in Seattle Washington where he works on various topics that bring data and the Web together. He currently leads the design effort for the Open Data Protocol and is also involved on the design of the local data storage features in future versions of HTML, representing Microsoft in the WebApps working group at the W3C.
