Rice Mill Process
 Human beings can’t eat paddy in raw format
 Extraction of Rice from Paddy involve several processes
 Modern rice mills help to achieve this

Rice Mill Process Overview

Pre Cleaning
 Remove straw, weed seeds and soil from paddy
 Remove immatured grains
 Remove dust

De Stoning
 Removal of stones and immatured paddy

Parboiling Stages
Pretreating the paddy before milling is known
as parboiling. This process is optional and
required only to produce boiled rice. It involve
the following 3 stages.
1. Soaking – Soak the paddy in hot water
2. Cooking – Drain the water and inject steam
3. Drying – Dry till reach the required moisture level

Soaking
 Paddy is soaked in soaking tanks

Cooking
Steam is injected inside
the cooker
Allow paddy to boil
This is fully automated
using PLC and sensors

Drying Using Fluidised Bed Dryer
 Paddy should be dried before milling
 Remove high moisture content 6-8%
from paddy in single pass
 Blowers and heat exchangers are
part of the FBD

Drying
 Driers remove the
Moisture gradually

Advantages Of Parboiling
 Higher head rice yield
 Parboiled paddy/rice gets longer shelf life
 Rich in nutrition
 Market for parboiled paddy/rice is high

Parboiling – Old Method
Need more labour and time since soaking continues
in days
Output quality depends on operator quality
Possibility of automation is limited
Increase the production will involve huge investment
Cooking in tanks change the colour of rice
Depending upon the type of rice(steam rice, semi-
boiled rice, boiled rice) different tanks and driers to
be installed
Quality of the output among batches will vary

Parboiling – Modern Method
 Small work force is required only to monitor the
automated process
 Soaking, cooking and drying are chain of process
controlled by timers
 Scale up cost is low since the same human and power is
enough
 All batch outputs will be same
 The entire process(soaking, cooking, drying) will be
finished in hours
 Efficiency is high
 Durability of equipments is high
 In line cooking is the key factor

De-Husking
It is the process of removing husk layer from the
paddy
Olden days it was done using mortar and pestles
Modern rice mills using friction technique
First level will do the separation of husk and
paddy
Second level husk is removed by suction
Good husker will remove 90% of the husk in a
single pass.

Paddy Separation
 Husk removed rice will fed to paddy separator
 Here unhulled paddy rice is separated from the brown rice
 Based on the gravity, size and buoyancy, it separate the paddy
and brown rice

Polishing
 Remove the bran layer and germ from brown rice, It is also
known as whitening
 Apply friction to the grain surface either by rubbing the grains
against an abrasive surface or against each other.
 Range of bran removal will between 8-10% of the total paddy
weight

Grading
Segregation of head rice, large and broken rice.

Mist Polishing
White rice is polished with the help of water to
appear silky

Colour Sorting
Separation of white rice from black rice and
discoloured rice

Mechanical Storage Solutions

paddy and rice

used in Silos to check
the storage level
 Temperature indicators
are used to know the
temperature
