16. Parboiling Stages
Pretreating the paddy before milling is known
as parboiling. This process is optional and
required only to produce boiled rice. It involve
the following 3 stages.
1. Soaking – Soak the paddy in hot water
2. Cooking – Drain the water and inject steam
3. Drying – Dry till reach the required moisture level

19. Drying Using Fluidised Bed Dryer
Paddy should be dried before milling

22. Parboiling – Old Method
Need more labour and time since soaking continues
in days
Output quality depends on operator quality
Possibility of automation is limited
Increase the production will involve huge investment
Cooking in tanks change the colour of rice
Depending upon the type of rice(steam rice, semi-
boiled rice, boiled rice) different tanks and driers to
be installed

23. Parboiling – Modern Method
Small work force is required only to monitor the
automated process
Soaking, cooking and drying are chain of process
controlled by timers
Scale up cost is low since the same human and power is
enough
All batch outputs will be same
The entire process(soaking, cooking, drying) will be
finished in hours

24. De-Husking
It is the process of removing husk layer from the
paddy
Olden days it was done using mortar and pestles
Modern rice mills using friction technique
First level will do the separation of husk and
paddy
Second level husk is removed by suction
Good husker will remove 90% of the husk in a
single pass.

25. Paddy Separation
Husk removed rice will fed to paddy separator
Here unhulled paddy rice is separated from the brown rice
Based on the gravity, size and buoyancy, it separate the paddy
and brown rice

26. Polishing
Remove the bran layer and germ from brown rice, It is also
known as whitening
Apply friction to the grain surface either by rubbing the grains
against an abrasive surface or against each other.
Range of bran removal will between 8-10% of the total paddy
weight
