Different Types Of Briefs
Learning Outcome One:
There are many different types of briefs businesses, companies
and individuals can give to other clients.
Contractual
Definition
Involves a signed agreement with stated objectives. If
you or the other party were to break any agreements
you would be in breech of contract and could face
legal action.
Purpose
This kind of brief works when a the recruiting party has
very specific objective and terms and conditions that
need to be followed and taken into motion.
What Its Contains
This type of brief usually contains terms and conditions,
the salary, the specific task, or payment and paces for
signatures etc.
Advantages
Advantages are that after it’s signed, whatever the
subject matter is will be taken into action without delay
or changes. The receiving party of the brief will have
full validation of the conditions, terms and task that
they will have to endure.
Disadvantages
The disadvantages of this type of brief is that once it’s
signed and confirmed there is no changing or going
back so before it is signed it has to be very carefully
overlooked.
Negotiated
Definition
Two parties have differing ideas and a compromise has
to be found that makes both sides happy, sometimes
involving a third party (An arbitrator).
The disadvantage of this brief is that you have to make
sure you choose the right person for it.
Purpose
This brief is used when there is an element of the brief of
the complete brief contains something that both parties
do not agree on, or need personal confirmation on.
What It Contains
This Type of brief is usually a face-to-face debate or
conversation, but could also be done over the phone,
or online chat (e.g. MSN or SKYPE). They would also
contain some type of confirmation like a signed
document or contract or a gesture (e.g. handshake).
Advantages
This type of brief allows both parties to make an equally
fair and pleasing decision and agreement.
Disadvantage
The disadvantage to this type of brief is that it there is
certain elements of the subject matter that could be
declined by the opposite party.
Informal
Definition
this type of brief is a verbal settlement between parties
without any official writing or content, less formal so to
speak.
Purpose
This brief is used when there is just basic information
that needs to be exchanged between two or more
separated individuals, groups or companies, without
formal need.
What is contains
This type of brief is usually just a conversation between
two or more individuals, groups or companies that can
take place either face-to-face or over the phone.
Advantages
The advantages to this type of brief is that it is quick
and practical and because its not so formal it can be
changed or discarded whenever needed.
Disadvantages
The disadvantages of this type of brief is that it can be
unorganised and not everything can be assured to go
as planned.
Formal
Definitions
More formal, like letters and written contracts, emails
or documents of confirmation and information.
Purpose
A formal brief is used when the brief has information
that need to be formally read or confirmed (e.g. a
letter from a company with job or task description).
What it contains
This brief would contain a lot of detailed information
about the subject matter such as date, time, task and
terms and conditions.
Advantages
The advantages to this brief is that its very detailed
and contains all the information you will need in order
to carry on with the task or objective.
Disadvantages
The disadvantages of this type of brief are that it
contains a lot of information that you might not
necessary like but there is no negotiating a change of
it. And it also takes time to form.
Competitive
Definition
This is a brief in which two or more parties would either
compete to have or where the instruction on the brief
would require competition to take place.
Purpose
This brief is used when a company needs to find a
candidate that is best and most capable of carrying
out the briefs requirements
What it contains
This brief would contain information on what exactly the
different candidates would be competing for.
Advantages
The advantages of this type of brief are that the party
that selects the candidate get the person who is most
suited to carry it out
Disadvantages
Individuals may put in low offers which means you may
end up having putting a bid in lower than you may
want to.
Commission
Definition
This brief consists of granting certain powers, money or
the authority to carry out a particular task or duty.
Purpose
This types of brief works well when as a company or
individual need a task to be carried out by someone
else but its one that can only be done by someone at
top authority and power, so you send out a brief the
would give a client top authority and power in order for
them to carry out this task.
What it contains
This brief would contain information on the task and also
what you will receive in order to carry out the task, also
you will be given such terms and conditions as the time
limit and budget and amount of authority.
Advantages
An advantage is that a company can do more than
one task as they have other people to carry out others
(like being in two places at once).
Disadvantages
The disadvantages of this brief is that the client that will
take the brief into action will have to be fully trusted and
able so it is done well. And if the subject matter on the
brief fails, the party in charge would be suffer the
damage for they made the decision on the leader.
Cooperative
Definition
You work alongside other production companies or
organisations who also have a brief therefore your brief
has to co-operate with the brief they are working on as
well.
Purpose
This brief is used when two or more separate parties
need to join forces for a better impact or outcome of
the subject matter.
What is contains
This brief would contain two or more different brief and
one brief that combines the different briefs together,
this could be different formal briefs such as written
letters, documents or emails or informal briefs such as
face-to-face or phone conversation or a mixture of
both.
Advantages
The advantages are that opposite parties can combine
in agreement to add better impact on the subject
matter.
Disadvantages
The disadvantages are that both parties might have
different ideas that clash which might need to be
completely changed in order to have an agreement.
Tender
Definition
Production companies may put together a brief with
materials such as a budget and proposal to a possible
client. The client would look at all the different tenders
they receive and choose the one they prefer.
Purpose
This brief is used when a company or certain individual
wants a client to produce something for them, but
unlike a contractual brief they would give that client
choices (based on the subject)
What it contains
This Type of brief would consist of different tenders,
highlighted basic information (e.g. company name,
subject matter contact details and dates).
Advantages
The advantages to this brief is that the receiving party
gets a variety of options to choose from.
Disadvantage
The disadvantages of this brief is that it would take
time to construct and the client might not choose the
option you thought would be best.

Different Types Of Brief

  • 1. Different Types Of Briefs Learning Outcome One: There are many different types of briefs businesses, companies and individuals can give to other clients.
  • 2. Contractual Definition Involves a signed agreement with stated objectives. If you or the other party were to break any agreements you would be in breech of contract and could face legal action. Purpose This kind of brief works when a the recruiting party has very specific objective and terms and conditions that need to be followed and taken into motion. What Its Contains This type of brief usually contains terms and conditions, the salary, the specific task, or payment and paces for signatures etc. Advantages Advantages are that after it’s signed, whatever the subject matter is will be taken into action without delay or changes. The receiving party of the brief will have full validation of the conditions, terms and task that they will have to endure. Disadvantages The disadvantages of this type of brief is that once it’s signed and confirmed there is no changing or going back so before it is signed it has to be very carefully overlooked.
  • 3. Negotiated Definition Two parties have differing ideas and a compromise has to be found that makes both sides happy, sometimes involving a third party (An arbitrator). The disadvantage of this brief is that you have to make sure you choose the right person for it. Purpose This brief is used when there is an element of the brief of the complete brief contains something that both parties do not agree on, or need personal confirmation on. What It Contains This Type of brief is usually a face-to-face debate or conversation, but could also be done over the phone, or online chat (e.g. MSN or SKYPE). They would also contain some type of confirmation like a signed document or contract or a gesture (e.g. handshake). Advantages This type of brief allows both parties to make an equally fair and pleasing decision and agreement. Disadvantage The disadvantage to this type of brief is that it there is certain elements of the subject matter that could be declined by the opposite party.
  • 4. Informal Definition this type of brief is a verbal settlement between parties without any official writing or content, less formal so to speak. Purpose This brief is used when there is just basic information that needs to be exchanged between two or more separated individuals, groups or companies, without formal need. What is contains This type of brief is usually just a conversation between two or more individuals, groups or companies that can take place either face-to-face or over the phone. Advantages The advantages to this type of brief is that it is quick and practical and because its not so formal it can be changed or discarded whenever needed. Disadvantages The disadvantages of this type of brief is that it can be unorganised and not everything can be assured to go as planned.
  • 5. Formal Definitions More formal, like letters and written contracts, emails or documents of confirmation and information. Purpose A formal brief is used when the brief has information that need to be formally read or confirmed (e.g. a letter from a company with job or task description). What it contains This brief would contain a lot of detailed information about the subject matter such as date, time, task and terms and conditions. Advantages The advantages to this brief is that its very detailed and contains all the information you will need in order to carry on with the task or objective. Disadvantages The disadvantages of this type of brief are that it contains a lot of information that you might not necessary like but there is no negotiating a change of it. And it also takes time to form.
  • 6. Competitive Definition This is a brief in which two or more parties would either compete to have or where the instruction on the brief would require competition to take place. Purpose This brief is used when a company needs to find a candidate that is best and most capable of carrying out the briefs requirements What it contains This brief would contain information on what exactly the different candidates would be competing for. Advantages The advantages of this type of brief are that the party that selects the candidate get the person who is most suited to carry it out Disadvantages Individuals may put in low offers which means you may end up having putting a bid in lower than you may want to.
  • 7. Commission Definition This brief consists of granting certain powers, money or the authority to carry out a particular task or duty. Purpose This types of brief works well when as a company or individual need a task to be carried out by someone else but its one that can only be done by someone at top authority and power, so you send out a brief the would give a client top authority and power in order for them to carry out this task. What it contains This brief would contain information on the task and also what you will receive in order to carry out the task, also you will be given such terms and conditions as the time limit and budget and amount of authority. Advantages An advantage is that a company can do more than one task as they have other people to carry out others (like being in two places at once). Disadvantages The disadvantages of this brief is that the client that will take the brief into action will have to be fully trusted and able so it is done well. And if the subject matter on the brief fails, the party in charge would be suffer the damage for they made the decision on the leader.
  • 8. Cooperative Definition You work alongside other production companies or organisations who also have a brief therefore your brief has to co-operate with the brief they are working on as well. Purpose This brief is used when two or more separate parties need to join forces for a better impact or outcome of the subject matter. What is contains This brief would contain two or more different brief and one brief that combines the different briefs together, this could be different formal briefs such as written letters, documents or emails or informal briefs such as face-to-face or phone conversation or a mixture of both. Advantages The advantages are that opposite parties can combine in agreement to add better impact on the subject matter. Disadvantages The disadvantages are that both parties might have different ideas that clash which might need to be completely changed in order to have an agreement.
  • 9. Tender Definition Production companies may put together a brief with materials such as a budget and proposal to a possible client. The client would look at all the different tenders they receive and choose the one they prefer. Purpose This brief is used when a company or certain individual wants a client to produce something for them, but unlike a contractual brief they would give that client choices (based on the subject) What it contains This Type of brief would consist of different tenders, highlighted basic information (e.g. company name, subject matter contact details and dates). Advantages The advantages to this brief is that the receiving party gets a variety of options to choose from. Disadvantage The disadvantages of this brief is that it would take time to construct and the client might not choose the option you thought would be best.
