The Roman army was made up of legions that each contained over 5,000 soldiers. Legions were organized groups that had their own numbers, names, badges, and fortresses. The Roman army was a highly disciplined and well-trained fighting force that helped the Romans build a vast empire through organized military campaigns.

The Roman army was made up of groups of soldiers
called the legions.
There were over 5,000 soldiers in a legion. Each legion had its
own number, name, badge and fortress. A legion had
commanders, officers and ordinary soldiers. There were also
doctors, engineers and other workers There were about 30
legions around the Roman Empire, three of which were based
in Britain at Caerleon, Chester and York.

3. Roman Soldiers
The spread of the Roman Empire was partly due
to the fact that the Roman army were so well
organised. At the time of its invasion of
Britain, the Roman army was the most
disciplined and efficient killing machine that the
ancient world had ever known. Its men were
well-equipped and highly trained, and operated
in strict formation on the battlefield.
4. Gladiators
Gladiators used to fight to the death –
hence the reason why many of them were
slaves.

Every town had its own bath complex (just
like a large swimming pool).
There was 170 baths in Rome during the
reign of Augustus and by 300 A.D that
number had increased to over 900 baths.

was his shield which was used for
protection

Swords were very important to the Romans.
The legionary wore his sword very high on the right
side of his body.
