Sketching the overall context in which we will discuss and develop the idea of a "common descriptor language" as an interchange format for sharing (Fab Lab) documentation, independent of systems used at individual labs.
5. • information interchange format
• sharing documentation
• independent of system used at individual lab
“FabML” would be an XML definition tailored for Fablab project
documentation needs - including things such as controlled vocabularies for
machines and materials needed to complete a project in order to allow global
searchability and specifying and formalizing other aspects of manufacturing
(which will undoubtedly become more obvious as the project proceeds).

8. • “[The] isolation from others is the necessary
life condition for every mastership which
consists in being alone with the ‘idea’, the
mental image of the thing to be.”
• “Action, as distinguished from fabrication, is
never possible in isolation; to be isolated is
to be deprived of the capacity to act.”

Editor's Notes
“PigmeiGigantumhumerisimpositiplusquamipsiGigantesvident”first recorded in the twelfth century and attributed to Bernard of Chartres, delightfully studied by Robert K. Merton, Aphorism; = a short phrase that expresses a true or wise ideacommonly ascribed to Isaac Newton, Newton ”If I have seen further it is by standing on ye sholders of Giants”Ambiguity: Newton clearly uses it to very humbly say that in fact HE HIMSELF has invented—in this case—the theory of colours
Standing on the shoulders of giantsParadox: 2 Pound Coinsource: http://www.pbase.com/image/41304245----- Meeting Notes (04.07.13 10:34) -----2 pound coin—one of the most expensive coins. "Standing on the shoulders of giant": do we have to pay for this extraordinary place that allows us to see farther than the giants themselves?
----- Meeting Notes (04.07.13 10:34) -----The ahporims picked up by a famous web search engine immediately pictures another ambiguity of the aphorism: borrowing, theft, plagiarism, conscious and unconscious quotation—the motor of scientific discovery, and indeed: artistic; the blurring boundaries between copying and inspiration
That means when design and digital fabrication want to be and have to be political (to realize the promise of the 3rd industrial revolution) they have to leave isolation – as to be isolated is to be deprived of the capacity to act
