Module 1: PRICEST - What factors should I consider before deciding to work overseas?

Let’s take a closer look at the concerns you may face when you
work overseas.
For your easy reference, the catchword is: “PRICEST”

“PRICEST” : Physical Mobility
Your ability to move around as you are used to may be limited when you are in the
country of your destination. There are countries that restrict access to certain places or
areas.
For example, there are countries in the Middle East that prohibit single women from
going to restaurants alone, or being with someone of the opposite sex
not their spouse.
You may be accommodated in a small,
cramped space with other co-workers.
Your work may not also allow you time
for recreation.

“PRICEST” : Relationships
When you work abroad, you will be leaving your
family and friends behind. You may be homesick.
You won’t be around when they celebrate birthdays,
anniversaries, and other special family events, or
when they are sick and need your presence.
Your absence may affect your relationships with your
spouse and children.
This can be very stressful. Are you
ready to cope?

“PRICEST” : Income and Expenses
Working overseas may give you opportunity to
earn more and improve your quality of life.
However, when your income increases, your
expenses may also increase.
In some countries while the salary may be high,
the cost of living is likewise high. This could
affect your ability to save and remit for your
family’s needs.

Now that you have computed how much money you will have after
setting aside your saving and deducting all your expenses,
ask yourself -
1. Is your net income worth leaving your family?
2. Will your net income meet your objective in
working overseas?
Remember that working overseas is
temporary. While you are at it, learn how to
save for your future and the future of your
family.

Are you willing to leave a secured job in the
Philippines over a temporary but better paid
job overseas?
When you work overseas, you are hired for a
specific job. Your assignment will most likely
remain the same throughout your employment
contract and without any opportunity for
promotion.
Your continued employment overseas will
depend on your agreement with your employer.

“PRICEST” : Environment
More than the different physical
environment like climate and time
difference, you will need to adjust to a new
culture altogether.
You will encounter language so unfamiliar,
different and limited food choices or even
taste food you are not accustomed. You
may also have to conform to a prescribed
type of clothing.
Developing new social relationships will be
a challenge as well.

“PRICEST” : Skill Set
A number of job openings may interest you.
Be sure you are equipped with the
qualifications such as education and
experience (skill set) to match the
requirements of the job.
Evaluate your skills.
Upgrade your skill set and level of
experience before applying if you have to.

“PRICEST” : Time
Come to work on time. The “Filipino Time”
that we are so used to is not acceptable
with foreign employers.
They are often very strict in observing work
schedule. For them every minute matters.
Having productive working hours is very
important to them.
