Rome is surely the city with the highest number of artistic monuments, some of which are hidden in little lanes, while others are visible from very many panoramic locations, for example the famous cupola of St. Peter’s. This guidebook lists many privileged observation points for you to enjoy the view from, the splendid Roman terraces, some which are well-known, and many which are fairly unknown. We visited them one by one, and also selected unusual open air places, and then we went on to describe the food they serve at the various times of the day in great detail: 72 addresses, 144 photographs to enjoy the most beautiful city in the world, from an unusual and decidedly fascinating perspective.

BUSINESS
glamour, relax, panorama, en plein air e business.

Exactly 4 years have gone by since launch of Terrazze Gourmet, and its partly unexpected success lead to a se-
cond print, which also sold out. The book was the result of a well-conceived choice: to allow the simultaneous
enjoyment of the immense artistic patrimony of the Capital, together with food and wine specialties from our Bel
Paese.
Indeed, no city in the world can boast such a wealth of monuments, and the mild climate which is its hallmark gave
us the idea that Roman “terraces” could be a privileged place to enjoy them from. We’ve used inverted commas,
because In this guidebook, most addresses are actually those of hotel terraces – all obviously open to non-hotel
guests – but you’ll also find courtyards, cloisters and bistrots, and their common factor is that part of their offe-
rings can also be enjoyed outdoors.
Given the success of the first edition, we obviously decided to keep the same general structure for this book, al-
though we did introduce a few changes (hopefully good ones). To begin with, the number of addresses we’ve li-
sted has increased quite a bit, from 45 terraces to 72. We subdivided them into categories to make it easier for
our readers to find the ones that correspond most to their tastes: gourmet, culture, design, glamour, relax, pa-
norama, open air and business. The fact there’s a “gourmet” category makes it clear that not all the terraces are
as food oriented. In fact, there are some places where eating is the central attraction, and others where you can
have less formal and faster meals at certain times of the day.
To give our readers an idea of opening hours and cost of the various offers, we have added easy-to-
understand symbols, with times and price range alongside (please refer to the legend for a detailed explanation) .
Besides, we’ve indicated public transportation to reach these addresses, and recommended nearby shops that
deserve a detour.
All the terraces are described in great detail both in Italian and in English, with splendid full-page pictures to give
readers a foretaste of the experience they are going to have: in fact, this book is both for Romans who live in the
city but don’t know these special locations, and for tourists, for whom we describe alternative routes which will
turn into unforgettable memories..We’ve visited all these places, and carefully checked their offerings with a lot of
“field work”, which was often demanding, but always a pleasure.
So we’ll let you read on, while pointing out that we’ve also created a tablet version for this guide book, both in Ita-
lian and in English, for devices based on both iOS (iPad) and Android operating systems. If you want to, you can
write to us at terrazzegourmet@lapecoranera.net to give us suggestions and advice for the next edition.
Buon appetito! We hope you’ll enjoy leafing through the pictures and visiting the terraces….

8. Gran Melià Rome
Villa Agrippina
Built over the archeological ruins of what used to be Villa Agrippina, the Gran Melià Roma
occupies a unique and special position: located in the panoramic part of the Gianicolo, it
dominates the Trastevere district and is just a short walk away from St. Peter’s and its majestic
Cupola you can admire from here. The beautiful urban resort is a masterly mix of ancient and
modern (the archeological remains from the I and II century d.C. which were uncovered when
the hotel was built, are now exhibited, courtesy of the Ministry of Italian Cultural Patrimony, in
the common areas of the hotel), with various open air areas which include a vast terrace and
a swimming pool surrounded by the Orti Domiziani. The “A Vivavoce” restaurant, an annex
to the hotel, benefits from the consultancy of Iaccarino, from the famous Don Alfonso, on
the Sorrento peninsula since 1890. In the elegant gourmet room, only in the evening and only
indoors, you can partake of a cuisine with Mediterranean flavours and season’s produce. We
had an excellent lobster tempura with sour sauce, a good rice “sartù”, and a “sfogliatella”
pastry with cinnamon-flavoured cream (it was good, but had nothing in common with the
classic version). For a more informal lunch or dinner, you can choose from the restaurant’s
“casual” offering, with a lighter menu made up of single dishes, sandwiches and salads, or
at the LIquid Bar, open from 12 am to 11 pm. The services of the Bar and of the “easy”
restaurant are also available outdoors, under lovely gazebos placed on the lawn opposite. It’s
not easy to find a table around the swimming-pool, as hotel guests have precedence, but
you can always try, and in any case the bar will welcome you for a drink (10-12 euro for non-
alcoholic beverages, 18-20 euro for alcoholic drinks) served with tidbits and finger food. And
like all luxury hotels worthy of the name, the Gran Melià boasts a vast Wellness area with
specific YHI treatments, also available for non-hotel guests, with prior booking.

propone pochi piatti semplici e diversi sandwich e insalate.
qualche stuzzicchino o finger food.

Piazza della Repubblica, formerly piazza Esedra named after the large exedra of the Roman
baths built by Diocletian, is amazing because of the various monuments with their façade
along its circumference: Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, built from a wing
of the imperial baths, the fountain of the Naiads in the center of the piazza, from which
sprouts what is one of the best waters in Rome, the water from the Acqua Marcia source
, and two magnificent late 19th century buildings with porticoes by the architect Gaetano
Koch, one of which is the Hotel Exedra. It is the favourite residence of a great number of
actors and singers passing through the Capital, a hotel which, apart from its central location,
has a lovely terrace with swimming pool that offers a spectacular view over the Eternal City.
The Posh restaurant-pool-bar is open non-stop from 10 am to 11 pm, and serves
breakfast, lunch (with a petite carte with appetizers, salads, snacks and pizza), apéritif (from
6.30 pm to 8.30 pm, a drink you choose accompanied by finger food) and dinner (with a

sorta di show cooking.
piatti e alcuni dolci.

Capo d'Africa
Hotel Capo d’Africa was developed inside a building of the 20s, and is located right at the
back of the Basilica dei Santi Quattro Coronati, a complex of Christian buildings on Monte
Celio. The dominant colour white of the façade made of small bricks, blends harmoniously
with the contemporary design of the inside of the hotel. The most attractive part is the roof
garden on the top floor: the view is breathtaking, it is a very attractive open air area,
surrounded by lemon shrubs and flowers, elegantly decorated with sofas and candles.
On this terrace you can enjoy the offerings of the Centrum Bar (which is on the ground floor,
open from 11 am to 1 am) that serves various food options depending on the time of day.
At lunchtime, a “petite carte” lists a selection of regional dishes, and it’s possible to have
an apéritif any time of day (a drink you can choose from a well-appointed list, but only
accompanied by green olives and a few salty snacks) and from 7 pm to 11 pm, there’s
the restaurant that serves a fun formula they call “Spaghettiamo” (let’s spaghetti!): the 6 first
courses on the menu are all made with Gragnano pasta, and are cooked directly at the
“pasta-bar”, thereby offering clients a sort of cooking show. If you want to go beyond the
first dish, the menu also lists various second courses and a few desserts.

16. Hotel Savoy
Converted into a hotel in the early 20s of the 20th century, Hotel Savoy stands on what
was formerly an aristocratic palazzo of the 19th century. The original structure has left its
mark of a restrained elegance in the “Umbertino” style, which blends very well with the
classic indoor furniture. Its name is a tribute to Queen Margherita di Savoia, who chose it
as her favourite residence for her stays in Rome. In the 60s it was a symbol of the “Dolce
Vita”, and subsequently, in the 80s, the great Federico Fellini chose it as the set for his
“Ginger and Fred”, starring his wife Giulietta Masina and Marcello Mastroianni. On the hotel’s
sixth floor, there’s a first terrace which can also be used when it’s cold, as there’s a
removable roof and original mushroom-like gas heaters discretely incorporated in the wall.
A little cement staircase leads to the upper level, which treats you to a spectacular view of
the city. You can see the Quirinale in the distance, the Basilica of San Giovanni and the
inevitable Cupola of St. Peter’s, visible from up close thanks to the telescope aimed at it.
Up here there’s only bar service, including apéritif, which is actually very “basic”: the drink
you choose is just accompanied by simple peanuts, olives and saltines. Obviously, the
Granet Restaurant & Bar's menu is more structured, and besides à la carte, it offers two
tasting menus: the Roman-style menu with 4 courses for 45 euro, and the International one
with 5 courses for 55 euro, both not including drinks. But there’s also another area which
is very popular, and where it’s best to book: the mezzanine, a little corner with a small table
and two little wicker armchairs that offer up a romantic perspective on the “Eternal City”.

Tatin fatta in casa.
Marriage Frères, serviti dalle 15.30 in poi.

18. ViviBistrot
A really unique location: 180 hectares of lawns to have a picnic on, inside of Rome’s largest
park, Villa Pamphili. For a number of years now, Vivi Bistrot has been organizing it all, a
restaurant built out of an old 19th century barn inside the park, and restructured in perfect
country style. The bistrot offers ready to use Picnic Boxes, thereby reviving the tradition of
informal lunches in communion with nature, and within reach of all wallets. For those who
feel like sitting comfortably at a table, the bistrot offers a buffet lunch (Monday to Friday)
whereas on Sundays and holidays it’s à la carte, with the added option of a real American
brunch (tasty scrambled eggs, tantalizing crispy bacon, toast, yogurt, orange juice, a soft
pancake with maple syrup and American style coffee). After having tasted the various
delicacies, there could be nothing better than a nice ride on two wheels to explore the
villa: for this service, you just have to contact Bikeaway and they will deliver your bike at the
bistrot entrance. After all that pedaling, you might want some boutique ice cream, and why
not, a delicious homemade Tarte Tatin. All of which is also possible at Vivi Bistrot, together
with a selection of teas, Marriage Frères, served from 3.30 pm on. Finally, aperitif - served
every day at sunset - is just a very short step away from staying on for a candle-lit dinner!

20. Hotel Splendide
Royal - Mirabelle
The right mix between a late 19th century building and elegant late 17th century furniture
has created a simply “Splendide” place. The luxury five-star hotel is a refined example of
the magnificence and richness of the Roman Baroque, with its boiseries, its polychrome
marble, its golden stuccoes and above all the majestic Murano chandelier used in the
famous ballroom scene in Luchino Visconti’s masterpiece “Il Gattopardo”. You’ll discover
yet another spectacle on the seventh floor where the Mirabelle restaurant is located, with
its terrace that offers one of the most attractive panoramas of the capital: you look out in
the distance towards Villa Medici and the Gianicolo, by way of St. Peter’s Cupola. The
cuisine is Mediterranean-based, but dabbles with Asian contaminations, to delight your
palate and not just your eyes. The quality is decidedly good, with mastered techniques, but
at times, the dishes, though well-prepared, don’t quite manage to instill any emotions. In
the course of our dinner, we tried a tuna sushi with a pleasant aroma of ginger, tasty ravioli
stuffed with mozzarella and caciocavallo cheese on a coulis of tomato, and to wrap up the
meal, a delicious pear crumble with vanilla parfait. Besides, the American bar of the
restaurant is open until late evening if you only want an after-dinner cocktail, while listening
to pleasant live music. If you go down one floor, you find yourself on another terrace, La
Limonaia, a more informal setting that is just as lovely, and which can be enjoyed starting
from breakfast time.
