development
The Importance of Health and Wellness Professional developing psychologically, spiritually and physically

It is important for the health and wellness practitioners to develop psychologically, spiritually and
physically because these aspects of life are part of the holistic framework of human development
(Dacher, 2006). If the practitioners are not developed in these areas, it would be counter-productive to
teach clients and expect them to do things to develop their integral health. As a part of the integral
process, it is essential that practitioners prepare and make changes in their inner and outer life (Dacher,
2006). This is a life-changing commitment which is also required of the clients. The clients are not
professionals in this area, so they are depending of the expertise of the practitioners. The psychological,
spiritual and physical development helps the practitioner to effectively share with the clients, in oneness,
open-heartedness, loving kindness, empathetic listening and presence when dealing with them (Dacher,
2006). If the practitioners develop the inner aspects of their life, it would be reflected on the outer aspect
of their life also (Dacher, 2006). This will also help to build confidence in the practitioner-client
relationship, which is a key component in the health practitioner’s practice of integral health.
One of the goals that I have for myself is to become psychospiritually flourished. This comes with
continuous practice, so I need to work on ways of developing this area of my life. This is the area where I
think I am still most lacking. I need to spend more time in meditation and practice of the subtle mind
exercise (Dacher, 2006). Concentrating on the breathing component of this exercise will help me to attain
psychospiritual flourishing, because there is a direct relationship between the breath and the mind
(Dacher, 2006). My hope is that this will help me to be at complete peace.
In assessing my wellness, I would score myself as follows: Spiritually, I am closer to being a “7”, because
I am still “work” in progress and I am yearning for optimal spirituality. This comes with deep
consciousness that is not easily attained. One way of moving to this level is frequent meditation and
exercises that calm and still the mind. Physically, I will also give myself a “7”. I am still not at my ideal
body weight, which is the most distinct area for correction. As far as I know I have no physical defects or
ailments. I will continue to do regular exercise, by taking daily walks and attend the gym at least three
days per week. I will also try to maintain a proper diet with special attention to portion size of each meal.
These actions are likely to help me to reach an ideal body weight. Psychologically I would give myself a
score of “8”. Improvement in this area could be accomplished by working on the emotional aspect of my
life. I think one thing that I need to do is take myself less seriously and find a reason to laugh each day.
This will also help with interpersonal relationships. I will also practice daily meditation, to help with
relaxation.
One way of assessing myself in six months is to hold myself accountable to a friend who I can trust, by
asking her to help with my assessment. This could go along with a self-searching mission, by honestly
evaluating the way I see myself spiritually, psychologically and physically and how well I maintain the
plans set to reach my goal.
