Apple wins patent on Kinect-like depth mapping
technology for 3D gesture interfaces. Unlike the Kinect,
though, the Apple concept granted by U.S. Patent and
Trademark Office last week is oriented specifically
towards identifying hand and finger gestures, rather than
whole-body movements. The patent complements
another one issued earlier this month which dealt
directly with analyzing hand gestures.
Intel® RealSense™ 3D Camera was the first
integrated camera that sees more like we do, so it can
understand and respond to natural movement in three
dimensions.

INTEL HAS AWARDED $1m to a number of developers as part
of its RealSense 3D App Challenge, which was launched last
year.
Orthosense was a top winner. Imagine one day you're being
rehabilitated after an orthopedic procedure, perhaps to repair a
repetitive strain injury in your wrist. Instead of wearing sensors
to monitor your progress – which are cumbersome, expensive
and limited – you simply move your fingers in front of what looks
like a webcam and the physician or physiotherapist gleans a
more accurate reading.
Or on a more recreational note, envision yourself sitting down to
play a game in front of your laptop, desktop or tablet. No
controller? No problem. With hands outstretched, you perform
minute gestures in the air to manipulate onscreen content – be
it dangling your fingers to make it rain, punching forward to
break through rocks or extending a forefinger to draw an object
in the virtual sand.

Gestures Using Wearables

Ring Zero, the latest version of which debuted at SXSW
Interactive 2015, uses touch sensor technology to let users
control devices by "drawing" gestures in thin air.By making
simple gestures while wearing Logbar’s Ring, the company
claims a person can do things like signal lights to turn on or a
TV to turn off. The technology is currently on display at the
Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which runs
through Friday.
Ring sends messages to a Ring Hub in order to control smart
home devices like speakers and lights through Bluetooth. The
gestures are customizable and can be selected by users. For
example, a user could program the device so a circle turns on
a TV, or a triangle closes smart blinds.

Using a 3D sensor located in the roof, close to the
rearview mirror, the car can recognize gestures
made with our hands within a designated area.
Using those gestures allows you to keep your eyes on
the road while also performing various tasks such as
adjusting the sound system volume or answering a
phone.

Facial Recognition for Dating
A Picture Speaks A Thousand Words
Audience members at Teatreneu comedy club in
Barcelona can set up a profile at the beginning of a
show, using an iPad stationed in front of each seat.
Facial recognition software then identifies facial
expressions – such as smiling or surprise – and starts
to generate matches with others in the audience.
It started with using tablets with facial recognition
software to figure out how much to charge its
customers.

Martian Smartwatch Is A Good Listener

The Martian Smartwatch received an Innovations Award at CES 2015. It
predates the Apple Watch and sells itself in an entirely different way. First it
looks like a conventional smartwatch. Second it has a line which is voice
activated.
Get the weather, set a timer, hear a sports score, ask directions and many
other voice commands are handy and convenient. Send a quick reminder
to yourself by voice.Voice Commands that include “Send text”, “Read
text” and “Reply” allow fast and convenient messaging on the go.
This year it appears Google is looking to take using our voices much
further and just introduced a new feature called Voice Access, which will
essentially allow users to control the apps installed on their devices with
merely their voice.
