West Nile
Virus
Presentation
What the West
Nile Virus?
• An infection which comes from
a bite of an infected mosquito.

• It comes from the mosquitoes
that have fed on infected birds
When did this
begin?
 • West Nile Virus started in Africa
     in 1937.

 • The first case of the West Nile
Virus that came to the United
     States was in August 1999.

 • The disease mostly occurs
     during warm and humid
     weather.
Symptoms
• Most people infected
    with the virus have no
    symptoms.
• About 20 percent of
    people acquire a mild
    infection called the West
    Nile fever.
• And less than 1 percent
    of those infected get
    serious infection.
Fact!
• Most West Nile virus infections occur
    during warm weather, when
    mosquito populations are active.

• The signs and symptoms of the illness
ranges from 3 to 14 days
How is it
transmitted?
• This virus is transmitted
    to humans or animals
    by a infected
    mosquito.

• You will NOT get the
    virus just by touching
    someone who has it.
                                Infected mosquito
Where is this
    most common?
• West Nile virus is most common in
areas such as Africa, parts of Asia
    and the Middle East.

• It is also common in these six
    states-Texas, South Dakota,
    Mississippi, Oklahoma, Louisiana,
    and Michigan.
                                          Where the virus is at.

• Over 45% of the cases have been
    reported ONLY from Texas.
Who is fighting
the virus?
 • There have been over
     30,000 cases since 1999.

 • As of September 4 ,2012
     there have been a total
     of 1,993 cases.

 • So far 87 deaths have
     been reported.
How to prevent
this from
happening to
you?
• Here are some ways to
    prevent it:
• Eliminate standing water
• Empty unused swimming
    pools
• Apply mosquito repellent
with DEET to your skin and This will attract mosquitos
    clothing.
• These are just some ways
    to prevent it.
Is there a
vaccine?

• Most people recover
    from West Nile virus
    without treatment.

• Taking some pain
    relievers may ease
    headaches and
    muscles. Pain Relievers
