- Planning is key to creating a great resume.Gather your information such as job titles, duties, and employment dates and make sure you verify your spelling.
- The five key parts to building a great resume are: the Heading, the Objective, Education, Employment, and Awards, Certifications and Special Skills.
- The heading is where the employer will find your contact information. Make sure it is bold and easy to locate. Use your proper full name – no nicknames.Full mailing address.Phone number where there is an answering machine with a professional message or cell phone with a professional message. Do not have music, motivational or inspirational quotes.Professional email address (don’t use - realcutemoma@yahoo.com; use full name@yahoo.com) If you don’t have a professional email address get one at yahoo or gmail. It’s free.
- The Objective is where you tell the employer what you are looking for. DO: To obtain a position in an organization where my knowledge and skills will be further developed to be globally competitive in the business and communications industry.DON’T: To find a job that will pay me a lot and have great benefits
- New graduates looking for entry level positions or with out a lot of work experience should list their education first.After you have work experience, the Experience section will go first.List your education in reverse order. Last goes first.Know the dates of attendance and graduation. List your degree, major and minor, concentration or certificate title. Do not list High School if you have a college information.List relevant coursework
- Make sure to include any Internship experiences or study abroad programs.Use your GPA if it is above a 3.3.Include awardsor achievements received at schoolIf you have received numerous awards they should be listed in separate section.
- List your work experience in reverse chronological order. That is, your current job is listed first, then your last job and so on going backwards.Make sure you verify your dates of employment.List your Company, Company’s Location, Job Title, Dates of Employment and Work Responsibilities.Make sure to use action verbs.
- This is just a short list of action verbs. A more complete list is included in the handout.When describing your work responsibilities, begin with an action verb to emphasize a specific skill or achievement.For example – Increased sales by 15% or Expanded new client baseTry to put emphases any skills that are relevant to the organization you are approaching for employment
- Here is an example of the format for Work Experience.Always put your job title in bold not the company. Highlight what you did not where you did it.Exceptions to this rule……You worked at a world renowned company.
- In this area list any scholarships,awards or achievements that will indicate your work ethic or your ability to contribute to their company.Make sure to describe each award because it’s name alone may not mean anything to the reader.
- Presentation is Everything!!!!!! Make your Resume to be visually enticing. It should be clean simple and easy to read. It should be aligned, balanced and uncluttered. The font size should be between 10 and 14 points.Examples of acceptable fonts: Times New Roman, Arial, Helvetica and New CenturyUnacceptable: Stencil, Brush Script, Comic, Forte and CurlzNo clip art, graphics or designs.Choose quality resume paper in white, cream, pale gray or pale blue.Remember to proofread your resume and have some else proofread it too. Two eyes are better than one.
