The teacher will be teaching a unit on poetry to their sixth grade class consisting of 10 girls and 9 boys, with the majority being white. On the fifth day, students will review terms related to poetry like simile and metaphor by looking at a digital poster, listening to a podcast, watching a YouTube video, and completing a webquest. The teacher will test all media beforehand and have backups prepared in case anything fails to work properly.
1. Assure: Day 5
Analyze the learners. I will be teaching a unit on poetry to a sixth grade class. There are ten girls and
nine boys; 85% of them are white and 15% are African-American. Five of the students belong to the
gifted program, and three have ADD.
State objectives. My students will be able to identify characteristics of freeverse and identify things like
alliteration, similie, metaphor, rhyme scheme, etc. within the poetry. They will do this by looking at
digital imaging poster, revisiting the terms, watching a youtube video, doing an in class writing activity,
and completing a webquest by the end of day 5 with 90% accuracy.
Select methods, media, and materials. For day five, we will look at the digital imaging poster, listen to a
podcast, watch a youtube video, and use a webquest.
Utilize Media & Material. At the beginning of class, we will again look at the digital imaging poster. We
will listen to the terms again on the podcast, and watch a youtube video about freeverse. In the video,
an in class writing assignment is given to the class to write two freeverse poems. The students will also
complete a webquest to finish the unit.
Require Learner Participation. Students are required to participate in group discussion by responding to
the youtube video, asking question, write two freeverse poems, and complete the webquest.
Evaluate and Revise. I will test all media before class begins to make sure all technology is working
properly. If the video doesn’t work, I will explain to the class about freeverse poetry and read them
examples. I will give them the writing activity for class, and I will have a print out of the webquest.
