2. ABSTRACT
It is widely recognized that technology plays a crucial role in management of education among
other activities in public and private domain. Based on the emerging technologies alongside
conventional teaching-learning methods and dissemination of knowledge, Ministry of Education
encourages teaching and learning with experiment, demonstration and computer systems.
Admittedly there is unequal distribution of technology in local schools, particularly secondary
schools hence lack of technology is among the challenges within education sector at all levels. The
distribution inhibits fair provision of both the legitimacy and overall direction in provision and
implementation of communication technology in universities. Some study show that information
technology is generally moving institution’s outputs toward higher performance and job
satisfaction by increasing range of potential administrative functions for basic, higher and
technical institutions. The gap to be examined will be to determine role of communication
technology and utilization in teaching-learning including available computer for e-learning, e-
library and other teaching and learning activities based of computer technology. The study has
four objectives to determine factors influencing choices of communication, effectiveness,
administrative capacity and challenges facing management in implementation of the technology in
educational activities. The location of the study will be at Maseno University. The population of
the study will be composed of sample strata of 150 university staff and 50 students. The study will
be descriptive based on survey design using simple random sampling technique and will be based
on three needs theory. Data will be collected by interview and questionnaire instruments designed
for the purpose. Computer SPSS package will be used for data analysis. Result of the study will
provide insight about means for improved effective planning, for relevant educational
infrastructure, software and human resource for the implementation and sustenance of
contemporary technology in education. It will also provide an incremental knowledge on influence
of technology in education.

4. Introduction
Technology in the sense of a field of study deals with scientific method of applications and
use of applied sciences in practical tasks in engineering and management of educational
activities. The utilization of contemporary technology in teaching and learning is of
essence for effective utilization and management of institutions educational information
communication, record keeping and local consumption by staff and students.
Strengthening technology in management of educational activities can optimize use of
facilities for balanced academic and technical management in all public secondary schools,
tertiary colleges and universities. However, there are challenges to the organizations
management among these are international competition, increased demand for quality
assurance, employee motivation, managing diverse workforce, ethical behavior and
contemporary technology. The study selectively will determine utilization, administrative
capacity and challenges of technology facing university management in implementing
technology in educational activities.
5. Determining the level of utilization, administrative capacity and challenges of
technology in education management is important.
e-government strategy and the policy place considerable attention to
education in the expansion of e-learning opportunities. ICT (KESSP, 2005-
2010: p:147).
Maseno University has developed the e-learning department (e-campus)
Faculty of Education use modern technology in teaching and research- i.e.
microteaching,
Faculty of Science use the technology for modifying food productivity, and
development of new equipment and use of technology for experiments.
Faculty of Art use the technology for Communication and entertainment
According to Plomp, Brummelhuis & Rapmund ( )three different stages in the development of the use
of ICT in schools can be observed. within the goals of organizations . organization to developed
utilization of technology are teacher:
1 user support for training and application
2 confidence in technology and application
3 enters an inventive stage to use technology for creative and collaborative learning
This will facilitate processing of work at TSC,KNEC, KIE, KESI among others. It would make
Education and knowledge management become simple (Shukor etal,2009) ,(Nonaka,1991) mentioned
that technology is a framework of educational management in form of communication process.
Background of the Study
6. Statement of the Problem
1.With the introduction of UPE and FPE the government is faced with increased number of student
enrolment. This requires extra teachers, faculties and knowledge for e-learning, e -communication,
experiments and microteaching
2.There is some application of technology in education however not standardized and ineffective
3. Technologist do not acquire training in preparedness for the new technology
4. Teaching staff are not prepared for the new technology
5. Management has problem in demining relevant technology first in time
6. Staff lack motivation when using technology particularly the technologists
7. technologist dropout due to professional wastage
Assumptions of the Study
All respondents will corporate and provide reliable responses regarding the subject
The institutions are supportive of the study
All selected participants in the study have at least prerequisite level of education
The ability an interest of the subject toward the application of technology in education is unquestionable
7. utilization ,administrative capacity and challenges of technology in using technology in
management of educational activities.
Note: teaching and learning with contemporary technology improves user interest –teacher
learner. The shot coming need to be assessed.
1.Productivity of the technologists by the government
2.acquisition of technology
3.administrative tasks in the management of curriculum to cope with the coming technology
4.the quality of education and job
Purpose of the Study
8. Objectives of the Study
1.Factors influencing choice of technology for educational activities
2.
3. Factores influencing administrative capacity and challenges
4. To demine the trained manpower for formal and informal sectors
9. Theoretical Framework
Based on McClelland’s Three needs theory
• Need for Power(n-Pow)
• Need for affiliation(n-Aff)
• Need for Achievement(n-Ach)
Hence work and learning are determined by individuals
attitude toward the activities based on the three needs.
Supported by Abraham Maslow(1970) . That the
motivation hierarchy exists to every human nature
