Organic or Biodynamic
How Organic differs from Biodynamic
• Organic and biodynamic are very similar
• Both are grown without chemicals and GMOs
with high animal welfare ethics and sustainable
farming systems
• Very different farming techniques
• Biodynamic farming is a holistic practice where
all things are considered living inter-related
systems - animals, plants and the solar system.
• Organic farming is a form of agriculture that
relies on techniques such as pasture rotation,
green manure, compost and biological pest
control.

Animal Welfare
• All our cattle is MSA graded and our producers aim to comply
with MSA and achieve a great product and quality eating
experience for the consumer
• Mistreated animals are less productive
• Maltreatment to the animals will result in them not grading and
the animals can only be sold at a reduced price, if at all
• Animal welfare is highest priority to our producers
• Unethical treatment towards animals is not beneficial to the
producer
• Grading system to guarantee product quality:
MSA – Meat Standards Australia

Price
Organic / BD costs more
• Less supply than demand
• Limited stock numbers due to limited amount of natural feed –
naturally grown pastures without the use of chemical or synthetic
fertilizer to push the feed growth
• To comply with certifying standards, abattoirs and processors also have
to be certified organic or BD resulting in higher kill and processing fees
• Cost of organic or BD farming reflects the true costs of sustainable
farming systems
• Consumers are currently paying a lower percentage of their income
on food than ever in history, and farmers are going broke at a greater
rate then ever

Full time mum with a part time job as Co-ordinator of the Organic & Biodynamic Meats Co-operative WA. When I was at school we used to call the ones who were the “bossy boots” and organised and controlled everything the “Co-ordinators”. As Co-ordinator of the Organic & Biodynamic Meats Co-op I co-ordinate livestock and orders. I make arrangements for the livestock to be delivered to the abattoir to meet the requirements of the customers. I manage all marketing matters on both ends, looking for new customers and new producers to join the coop. I am continuously in contact with our growers and ensure that their certification is always up to date. Coop Established in 2007 by a group of certified organic or biodynamic farmers. Their aim is to supply the WA market with a healthy organic meat, ensuring that the integrity of organic certification is kept upright from paddock to plate.
Pesticides When I was pregnant for our first child I decided that I will not feed my baby any already made products and got a fantastic book called “Super Baby Food” (by Ruth Yaron). I got my babies through without formula or any already made baby food. One thing I will never forget reading in the book was “Pesticides kill living things”
Antibiotics are used to treat specific sick animals. In organic it is used as a last resort to save the animal and that animal cannot be subsequently sold into the organic system.
Conjugated linoleic acids or CLAs are a naturally occurring fatty acids found in meats, meat products and dairy products. CLAs have been implicated in the prevention of atherosclerosis, different types of cancer, hypertension and also for the improvement of immune function 2 .
The WA climate makes it extremely difficult to finish off animals out of season. Some of our growers feed their animals a limited amount of supplement feed to finish them off out of season, others use irrigation systems. Numbers of animals coming through this way are very limited as the costs are muc
Lime (calcium carbonate) and gypsum (calcium sulphate), bentonite, sodium bicarbonate and dicalcium phospahate are added to a naturally balanced formula.
Dedication – to produce a safe and healthy product without exploiting resources Knowledge – knowing all the dos and don'ts, being fully educated Practice – practising a sustainable farming system Conserving an ecological balance by avoiding depletion of natural resources. I can imagine that in the future there will be combination of the farming system – they are tools to reach the same goal
