Jaw surgery in chicago, part 5 correcting weak cheek bones with zygomatic augmentation
1. Jaw Surgery in Chicago, PART 5:
Correcting Weak Cheek Bones with
Zygomatic Augmentation
This five-part article series explores the various kinds of jaw malocclusions there
are and the surgery options that can be used to correct both the resultant
cosmetic and functional challenges.
This five part article series has been taking an in-depth look at the various corrective surgical options
patients with maloccluded bites and the resultant “unaesthetic” facial structures have. Our previous
article post focused on the cosmetic surgical solutions that are available to patients that present with a
weak chin. In this, the fifth and final installment of the series, we shall be exploring how jaw surgery in
Chicago, technically referred to as orthognathic surgery or onlay grafting, can be performed to augment
weak cheek bones and in doing so, vastly improve upon the appearance and symmetry of the face.
Jaw Surgery in Chicago Loop: What Are Weak Cheek Bones?
2. ‘Weak cheeks’ describe the appearance of a face that is lacking bone volume beneath the eyes and just
lateral towards the side of the eye. The cheek bones are important in establishing a strong and angular
face; and bone structure plays a fundamental role in what we consider to be attractive. Without
sufficient bone volume here, a patient’s face can appear to be thin, gaunt and aged. Zygomatic or cheek
augmentation is a jaw surgery in Chicago Loop that emphasizes the cheeks through the implanting of a
solid material.
About Zygomatic Augmentation Jaw Surgery in Chicago
The jaw surgery in Chicago Loop used to augment the cheek bones can have a fantastic impact upon
one’s cosmetic appearance. Whether its genetics that have left a patient with thin and hollowed out
cheeks, or age (and the loss of fat in the upper face), a zygomatic cheek augmentation can be performed
to correct facial symmetry and shape. This jaw surgery in Chicago consists of the placement of an
implant, which is sometimes custom fabricated to perfectly fit in with the natural contours of a patient’s
face so as to achieve the best cosmetic results. Malar implants are placed directly over the cheek bone
to give them more projection and a higher definition. Submalar implants are inserted below the cheek
bone to augment the midface and fill out hollow, sunken cheeks. Malar/submalar combination implants
can be used to achieve both cosmetic results; higher cheek bones and filled out, supple cheeks. Each
patient presents with an entirely unique case and is thus approached with due consideration and care
by this dual-degreed Chicago oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
Jaw Surgery in Chicago and Post-Operative Care
During this jaw surgery in Chicago Loop, a cheek implant will be inserted via incisions that are made
inside the mouth, so there will be no visible scarring on the face. Post-operative bruising is generally
minimal, if not completely absent and patients only really need to apply ice for the first two days.
3. Swelling and tenderness are the main hurdles associated with zygomatic augmentation jaw surgery in
Chicago, but these can be effectively managed with prescription analgesics (pain-killers) and anti-
inflammatory medications.
In terms of post-operative care, it is generally recommended that patients take 4-5days off from work to
recover from zygomatic augmentation jaw surgery in Chicago Loop. This can mean having the
procedure done on a Friday and return to work on Monday. One should also avoid heavy aerobic
activity and strenuous exercise in the ensuing month. This will allow the face to heal properly and
without incident.
