3. Where do openp2pdesign.org and Open P2P Design come
from?
* March 2005, Milan (Polytechnic)
* a young student started his master degree thesis in
industrial design (actually it became service design soon)
* Design researchers were studying Design+Locality:
* Spark! Design and Locality (Europe)
http://www2.uiah.fi/virtu/spark/index.html
* Me.Design (Italy)
http://www.sistemadesignitalia.it/sdi/ricerche/medesign/index.php
--> How can we design projects for a locality and its
community?
--> How can we enable the participation of a community in
the design process?
4. Free Software/Open Source and P2P were just breaking into
other disciplines...
* Open Source Everywhere
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/11.11/opensource.html
* Open Publishing
* Open Content
* Open Biotechnology
* Open Source Religion
* Open Cola / Open Beer
* Open Design
* (...and more coming later, like Open Money...)
Fre Software, Open Source and
P2P as promising way to organise
communities
5. Why Open / P2P forms are promising?
* Open Source is based on Communities
* Communities are Complex Systems
* Bazaar style enables parallel projects, then evolution, self-
organization and emergence
* Complex Systems can solve Complex Problems
Complex Open P2P communities could:
--> solve complex problems
--> design complex projects
--> design complex collaborative activities

8. April 2006, Master Degree Thesis:

Design for an Open Peer-to-Peer
self-organization)

9. There's also a short (and updated)
version in English (and Spanish and
Italian) too!

10. Open P2P Design
--> an open source Metadesign methodology
openp2pdesign.org
--> A Strategic Design project for researching and
communicating the methodology and developing
projects
11. What is openp2pdesign.org?
It's not a startup (yet) but an open source
community under development.
International (English language) with projects in
Italy, Spain, Finland, South Korea, Singapore …
So far: Next:
1 master degree thesis Books
1 paper + 1 book Events
7 workshops Open source softwares
1 keynote speech Workshops
1 commissioned report A larger network
12. Make Magazine as Metadesign and Strategic Design example
* Make Magazine
* Maker Faire
* “Makers” Book (not Cory Doctorow's one!)
* Make: television
* Make Controller Kit
* Craft Magazine
--> Tools, Knowledge, and Systems for DIY
--> Metadesign projects ofered within a whole Strategic Design
project
Just an example of
what it could be... on a
smaller scale maybe :-)
14. Why Open P2P Design?
* mass-collaboration/crowdsourcing/distributed creativity force
a change in the role of designers
* it's about mass collaboration-based or community-based
activities (and Open Design is just an example)
* communities generate innovations as the outcome of
collaborative activities
--> designers become enablers / facilitators of distributed
creativity, and can work on innovation even outside
traditional design projects
15. Why a methodology and not a tool, like a wiki?
* a methodology is a set of tools, roles, processes
* open everything: the jump from software is not clear yet
* open only in some cases, not always because is cool
* software, tools have embedded values and processes
* what works for software may not work for other projects
--> more research on the tools and processes is needed
--> a methodology is a more systemic approach
--> if you understand the process you can adapt it
16. What is Open P2P Design?
Open Design (design of an open project)
+
P2P Design (design of a peer-to-peer system)
=
the co-design of Open P2P social systems
A promising way to design
with/for a Community and
its Locality
17. What does Open P2P Design do?
an open p2p design process +
an open p2p collaborative activity self-organized by a
community
=
an open metadesign / service design project
Open P2P forms as a
design project and a
design tool
18. Conway's Law + Complexity Theories
* ..organizations which design systems ... are constrained to
produce designs which are copies of the communication
structures of these organizations.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway's_Law
* complexity as a system property emerges fro the interaction of
a given system with another
Casti, J. L. 'On the System Complexity: Identifcation, Measurement, and Management",
Ed. }. Casti and A Karlqvist, 'Complexity, Language, and Life: Mathematical Approaches',
Sprinser-Verlag, 1986.
-->(complex) open p2p processes design similar processes
19. Design an Open P2P activity
* Open / P2P communities are about activities, not just files
* an activity can be designed as a service design project
--> open p2p (process and project) can be designed with service design
--> metadesign: we design how to co-design an activity
* we can make collaborative an existing activity (Open Business)
* it can be a design activity itself (Open Design)
* then Open P2P Design can be redesigned in the same way (it's Open)
* co-design: the community modify an activity and make it evolve

20. A proposal of an Open P2P Design Process (Participation Matrix)
21. Where does Open P2P Design come from?
Open Source Software development process +
Activity Theory +
Service Design (+ Activity Theory) +
Action Planning +
Social Network Analysis +
...
...and also the Source
Code comes from
them!
22. Where could we use Open P2P Design?
* within an organization (community, enterprise, public institution), for
its own processes
* when an organization (community, enterprise, public institution)
enables another one
* for community-based services / businesses
* for projects for distributed systems, territories and cities
--> Marketplaces, Open Innovation, Enterprise 2.0, Open Government,
Open Design
26. 02. Participation Matrix
“First version of the Participation
Matrix, we do everything by
ourselves”
“Second version, now the students
manufacture and manage the
product, we just help them
distributing it”
32. Current research
Doctoral Candidate in the Media Lab – Aalto University - TAIK
"A digital open source design methodology for enabling complex
distributed systems with open, collaborative and p2p dynamics"
The hypothesis of this research is that a design methodology
(developed as an open source software) can be more proper for co-
designing distributed systems, visualizing and managing their nature
of complex social and technological systems.
--> Further researching and testing the methodology (tools,
processes, roles) with participatory action research
33. Issues to study:
* software analogy with design (code, open source, coding)
* complexity of open and p2p systems (analysis + simulation)
* social network analysis
* agent based simulations
* design and complexity
* information and design
* visualization of collaboration and communities
Supervisor(s):
* Ramon Sanguesa (Universidad Politecnica de Catalunya, Barcelona
+ Columbia University, USA) http://es.linkedin.com/in/ramonsanguesa

34. Context:
* Design (product, service, ...) ?
* Public Services (co-creation, open data, community-based ...) ?
* Museums (services, exhibitions, goods, …) ?
* Digital Fabrication / Fab Labs ?
Needs:
* scholarship!!!
* context
* communities
* study plan
