20. Adults and Children use the Internet in different ways DO YOU KNOW HOW YOUR CHILD USES THE INTERNET ? WE NEED TO BE INVOLVED IN OUR CHILDRENSâ ONLINE ACTIVITY, VALIDATE THEIR SKILLS + LEARN FROM THEM YOUNG PEOPLE Interactive chat, IM, Music, Games, PARENTS Mostly e-mail and web for research
21. We must start to understand that being on-line is just being in another ârealâ place
22. The difference between Knowledge and Wisdom HELP YOUR CHILDREN TO UNDERSTAND THE CONTEXT TECHNOLOGY IS THROWING UP NEW IMPORTANT SAFETY ISSUES WHICH CHILDREN MAY NOT SEE KNOWLEDGE Many children pick up technology quicker ! WISDOM Understanding how to behave in a virtual world
23. Children are not the same as they used to be Access to unlimited knowledge Vs Emotional literacy and social immaturity
26. Supervised / unsupervised access points WE NEED TO DO MORE THAN SUPERVISE- WE NEED TO HELP EDUCATE CHALLENGE = to ensure that children are safe wherever they use the Internet IN SCHOOL Generally, supervised, protected and monitored OUT OF SCHOOL Often no filtering, supervision or monitoring
27. Convergence + the Internet going mobile Already some children are receiving abusive/hoax txt messages As technologies converge we need to re-view the safety messages Increasingly mobile Fixed location for access eg home/school
54. Building up a picture First Name: Ollie / Oliver Surname: Bray Town: Weymouth, Dorset School: Radipole Primary School School Address: DT3 5HS Targets Address: Spa Road Other: Picture (house and target) Directions to house Census Data Young people also normally give out lots more information. Including Age and Likes / Dislikes . There is also lots of evidence to suggest that some children use inappropriate language on the internet and post photos of inappropriate things . Information
One of the aims CEOP has is to engage and empower children, young people, parents and the community through information and education. The internet has become integral to childrenâs lives, and we need to be able to give them the tools to use the internet safely. This is also paramount with regards to parents and giving you the knowledge to know what your children are using the internet for. Here you will see some more stats that were obtained from 6000 11-16 year olds through the Thinkuknow campaign. The most worrying of all are the last 2 bullet points- 25% of young people asked said they had met someone in the real world who they first met online, and ÂŒ of these did not take anyone with them. Of the Ÿ of young people who did take someone, 83% took a friend rather than a trusted adult. So, not only are they putting themselves at risk, but also their friend. This is where educating people is so important- children need to know what the possible risks are from using the internet and how to manage those risks, and parents need to know more about what their children are actually using the internet for. Hopefully this next section will give you examples of what young people do online environments.
Very important to start positively. â Stress that the internet is a wonderful resource and include a few examples of how you are using the Internet in your teaching to help children discover, connect and create their own work. â Clearly the fact that this is a global medium is important to stress. However â it is also important to state that because the Internet puts the whole world in childrenâs hands that they can equally access things which you as parents might not like them accessing (but not in school!) When we look at this issue of Internet safety we need to do so in a balanced way making sure we donât forget the real benefits!
The internet is a fantastic resource and can stimulate learning for your child. The internet has many positives, but you need to remember it also carries risks.
Content â the most searched for word on the internet is Sex. It is now estimated that at least 200,000 US citizens are addicted to pornography on the Internet. But there are other problems â the issue of inaccurate information could be very serious if your child took bad advice on a health problem. Contact â a parentâs worst fear is that another adult might try and contact their child and then meet them offline â this is very rare but sadly it has happened. Commerce â the increasing commercial nature of the Internet means your children may be tempted to fill in their personal details in all sorts of places on the web and end up getting marketing information you wouldnât want them to see. Currently it is estimated that 25% of all e-mails sent contain SPAM (junk mail). Those who have hotmail accounts will be very familiar with this ! Pharming (pronounced farming) is a cracker 's attack aiming to redirect a website 's traffic to another, bogus website.
So, what weâre going to do now is go through how children and young people communicate and interact in online environments. Has anyone heard of or used a chat room before? How about Instant Messenger, or MSN? This has become a phenomenon with young people, and you will find that as soon as they get in from school, one of the first things they do is log on to IM. Itâs just like having a real time conversation but over the internet. Social Networking- does anyone know what we mean by this? (wait for a response) Has anyone heard of Facebook, Bebo, Piczo? These are social networking sites, and they allow people to create a unique online profile, where they can upload photos, communicate with their friends and talk about their interests. Friends Reunited is also a social networking site- for those of you who use it! Social Networking has grown in popularity in recent months and has also become âtheâ thing to be doing online. Iâm going to show you examples of all the things we have just discussed so you can see for yourselves just what makes them so popular. Lastly, blogs. Does anyone know what a blog is? Blogs are online diaries (from the word âweb logâ) that allow people to express their thoughts and feelings, but online rather in the conventional diary. David Cameron has a blog- I think heâs quite proud of that! If anyone has any questions or queries about what weâre going to go through now, please just ask.
Pause when necessary to provide explanation to audience The first video I am going to show is Habbo Hotel. Has anyone heard of or seen Habbo before? Habbo is a public facing chat room, and the average age of users of is 9 years old. Habbo is one of the better moderated chat rooms, and that means that certain actions and language is not tolerated and people being inappropriate will be banned from the site. Itâs an avatar based chat room, and this means that when children log onto the site, they become a character rather than have a real picture of themselves. The hotel is like a hotel in the real world- it has bars, restaurants, clubs and swimming pools, and allows children to do things that they cannot do in the real world. Here is the welcome lounge- all the characters you can see represent a child that is logged on at this moment in time. All the white bubbles you can see are conversations that users are having with each other- and as itâs a public site, everyone can see what is being said. There are a number of different rooms that young people can go in, to chat to friends, and they can also have their own room within the hotel. (pause here to talk about how children furnish their rooms and the risks) Here, they can add furniture and make their room unique to them. This function is fantastic, but has resulted in children engaging in risky behaviour that is becoming worryingly common. Children are doing things online to obtain credits or money to buy things for their virtual rooms. This could range from taking their clothes off on webcam for people, to engaging in cyber sex. Children donât understand the risks that this involves, as their main concern is to get the biggest virtual TV for their room, or a new sofa. Obviously, this is something that needs to stop, and children need to be educated to know what the consequences are from this behaviour and also that there are adults who will access these sites and actively look to engage with children for their own sexual gratification. The characters that children use can be changed to be unique to the user. They can change their hair and clothes- all the things that in the real world they arenât able to do. As you can see the animation used is fantastic, and you can see why these chat areas are so popular with children. So, as CazCaz, we decide to go to the Lido and have a swim. But before we do, we have to change into our swimming costume! We decide to go and chat to the person sitting under the umbrella- when this was recorded, we had no idea who the person is or what was going to happen, but as you will see, it worked out well and shows how children can be vulnerable! So the conversation begins and the username that the person uses is immediately something we as adults would maybe think odd- ATK76. It could just be a random figure, but it could also be a date of birth, making the person 31. Something to think about! ( Pause here to discuss ASL) ASL- does anyone know what that stands for? Age, sex, location. You will know that in text messaging, abbreviations are used, and this is the same with chatting online. There is a chat lingo page on the thinkuknow.co.uk website, and I would recommend that you have a look- it may be of use to you! This example is also good as it shows just how easy it is to lie online. We say we are 16, and the person we are talking to has no idea whether this is true or not. Children are increasingly meeting people in sites like this and donât understand that other people lie, and could be an adult pretending to be a child. So the conversation continues, and you will see that ATK76 asks if we want to chat on IM. This means to chat using instant messenger- away from the public site where conversations are moderated so the conversations could be more intimate and users can ask questions to get to know each other. But to do this we need to share our email address. This site is one of the better moderated chat sites and giving out personal information is not allowed and will be picked up by the moderator or moderation software. But children have found a way of sharing personal information and getting around this moderation. As you can see, by using abbreviations and taking out key words, children are able to give out email addresses, enabling the chat to continue in IM. You may be thinking itâs just an email address- what is the risk about that, and we will discuss this in more detail when we go through IM. So we have met a stranger, and have shared some personal information with them all in the space of less than 2 minutes. This is a typical example of how children are using the internet to communicate with others. Does anyone have any questions before we move on to another example of a chat room?
This is the Think know website- www.thinkuknow.co.uk . There is lots of information, including advice and guidance for both children and adults. This ranges from current trends regarding mobile phones, to how to stay safe whilst using social networking sites. The educational programme Thinkuknow consists of 3 main themes- How to have fun (all the fun things young people use the internet for- playing games, downloading music etc), How to stay in control (what the possible risks are from the fun things and what they can do themselves to make their online experience a safe one) and How to report (where they can go to report inappropriate behaviour online and what this process entails). When you get home, I would recommend saving the site to your favourites and encouraging your children to also have a look.
Here are 2 examples of where CEOP have been working with industry to raise awareness of their report abuse function. This is where people can report anything that has happened whilst they have been online which has made them feel uncomfortable, or any suspicious behaviour they have come across. Microsoft, who work in partnership with CEOP have added our report abuse tab to messenger, and since doing this, CEOP have had a 50% increase in the number of reports received. CEOP want to encourage children and young people to recognise the logo, so they know where to go to make a report.
