2. INSPIRATION (Insight) - The stimulation of
mental activity leading to discovery: (the “Aha!”
moment).
Designers often position themselves to be
inspired by “shopping” for ideas where they are
most likely to occur. Depending on their field of
specialization, designers may hover around,
books, museums, machinery, dirt, bones, etc.
3. Every play or production staged creates
new problems, thus new design
possibilities for theatre designers.
One of the first notions that occurs to a
designer is to look for a paradigm (an
existing model) of a solution to a similar
problem .
4. With every new problem they address,
designers, theatre designers included,
reference a multitude of different sources,
searching for inspiration.
Traditionally, the four most common sources
of inspiration for all designers are:
Nature
History
Culture (Art and Artifact)
Imagination
5. Most of these sources of inspiration are
causally linked. This means they are derived
from one another in some way.
For example:
Objects that were inspired by “nature” many
years ago, may be now considered ” historic
artifacts”. Symbols that were communication
devices are now viewed as art. Primitive
shelter, no matter how basic is seen as
architecture.
6. Nature is by far the most dominant source of
inspiration because it offers the oldest and
most time proven models (paradigms).
We have used nature as an inspirational
model for such basic things as: shelter,
clothing, tools and weapons.
Let us look at some examples:
7. SHELTER
The cave is one of
man’s earliest
forms of shelter.
It was used by
other animals
before him.
8. Sometimes a natural solution becomes
re-designed to meet new criteria. (safety
for instance)
19. An artificial cave or burrow becomes a hovel
using natural materials such as wood, stone,
thatching, palm fronds, etc.
20. A not too distant cousin. A product of
design refinement.What different criteria
(needs) might have prompted this
design over the one previous?
21. Often shelter, clothing
and other crafts, share
similar roots, materials
and techniques.
Inspired by animals
both in form, function
and structure, weaving
has become and
indispensable craft.
22. A more refined and complex
structure might also use natural
materials such as grass and
hide, but requires more
craftsmanship, such as tanning
and weaving.
Such materials and techniques
can be seen in apparel as well.

* As, one does not, usually, go to a hardware store to purchase a piece of fruit.

* This is, hopefully, done to gain further insight and avoid duplication, and not to rip someone off.
