The games that we’ve played have included the “Family Feud.” Last year we played “Survivor,” which is truly brutal. We’ve returned to an old favorite, “The Price is Right,” and we’re going to play the High-Low game from “The Price is Right.” We’ll do it collectively. Last year “Survivor” was no collaboration. We’re going to return to collaboration again, so working together, I’m going to show you a statement like this. “For teens, success means making a lot of money.” About 45% - there’s our guess. Is the actual answer higher or lower than 45%? Let’s throw your hands up if you think it’s higher. Throw your hands up if you think it’s lower.
Still a pretty good number. What does that say about the other 32%?
This is with PSPs, the Internet. Facebook. Boring was when you had to do your homework, without the Internet.
Not me. People thinking about themselves. You remember being a teenager. Half think they’re really good-looking. The other half think they’re VERY good-looking.
This is a practical generation. They are marrying ‘80s materialism with ‘60s idealism. I want to be the nurse that drives the hummer.
Still a pretty good number. What does that say about the other 32%?
Target Profile: Demographics
There are nearly 34 million teens in the United States today, as most of you know by now. At the same time, there are nearly 40 million twenty-somethings – nearly 4 million more than last year! How’s that possible? In the decade from 1990 to 2000, the teen population grew by 4.5 million, growing at a rate of 17%. We’re now seeing the results of that little population boom aging into its twenties…
Speaking of families, let’s take a look at the typical teen household. Who’s minding the kids? According to the census, and consistent with our study, about 2/3 of teens live in a home where their parents are married to each other – for the other 1/3 that’s not the case. Again, per the census, this has been relatively consistent since about 1994…and is up about 5% since 1970. Remember, despite these numbers – far more than two-thirds of teens value their family. In fact, we’ve found qualitatively that those who often come from single-parent or “broken” homes recognize and appreciate the value of family.
When it comes to working, nearly 80% of fathers work a full-time job, and 57% of mothers do the same. How many teens come from households where both parents are working at the same time? 49%

We always measure spending. Some of our clients are obsessed with this. $127 billion will be spent by teens in the US in the next year. You just take all those teens and do your math, you’ll find $72 a week and the great things for teens that they’re spending typically doesn’t involve mortgage payments, diapers and things like that. For the most part, this is expressive. 20-somethings, a whole lot more money. Granted, there are more 20-somethings, but $606 billion will be spent by 20-somethings over the course of the next year, same methodology, which equates to $291 a week. Sad thing for these guys is, you’ve got stuff like credit card debt, rent, mortgages, car payments, insurance, school debt, dependents you’ve got to take care of, so this is not – as much as that number is smaller than theirs, but for the most part it’s all discretionary. For twenty-somethings it’s a mix of discretionary and needs-based spending. Yes, and if you really want to get down to a category, what are they spending on – that’s actually in the study, as well.
Where do they get their money? Nowhere is trickle-down economics more in play. Mostly from where you’d expect – their parents. But other sources as well. But what do all of these have in common…BUILD… All indirect sources from their parents and adults in general. But good thing that they still have the part-time jobs. Well not so much. As the economy has tightened up… CLICK
Despite all the news you’re seeing 36% of teens expect to spend more money in the next 12 months…Black teens are the most optimistic, with 43% saying they’ll spend more… So, teens are probably the most optimistic segment in the population 20% say they expect to spend less…30% of the oldest teens say so… 44% say they expect to spend about the same… and that number has risen. And for teens treading water is equivalent to a recession. But let’s put our optimist hat on… You could say that... CLICK So this is clearly not a consumer group in crisis.
