- Walk through surveys should be done regularly in your normal job so that when you do it in the field yoou know what you are looking at and able to make an educated assessment of the risks.
- Negotiate controls – You may want the Rolls Royce solution but in the reality of the field you may have to accept something less that leaves an inherent risk to personnel. Be prepared to negotiate for the best you can then help the affected areas develop SOP’s to manage the residual risk(s).
- In-place specialist equipment and specilaists – this is what is available to you through any coalition partners in your area. Check calibration – just because an item is a day out of cal does not mean it won’t work properly. Do a bump check then use your professional judgement on serviciablity. Professional judgement – If you don’t know the answer then say so, don’t make it up or a bad shout remember there is reachback available to you.
- Use all available sources before you go, if you’ve got time, to get a picture of potential issues and priorities of the area you are going to. Field controls PPE is often a first resort and the only one available in the field. You won’t get LEV or other engineered controls so be prepared to advise on the correct type of RPE etc. If you’re unsure about an area and the hazards there mark it off as a no go area until such time as it can be looked at in closer detail.
